Chapter 975: The Girl Who Changes

"Mrs. Maurice, the new term is about to begin, so I’ve been busy with my summer homework," Kevin quickly explained, suddenly remembering something. "By the way, Fiona hasn't returned from Antarctica yet, has she?"

"Of course she has," a crisp voice suddenly rang out from behind Kevin. He turned to see Fiona, whom he hadn't seen in a while, standing before him. She wore a plaid shirt, her hands tucked into her jeans pockets, and smiled brightly, revealing white, orderly teeth. She said to Kevin, "Hi, Kevin, we meet again. I thought you had already forgotten about me."

"How could I forget? I’ve always remembered you," Kevin blurted out but felt the need to clarify, "Yes, I mean I remember the gift you gave me. Thank you, Fiona."

"Don't mention it; I should be the one thanking you," Fiona walked over to her mother, affectionately linking arms with Maurice, and said with a touch of lingering fear, "I've heard from my dad. If it weren't for you carrying my mom to the hospital the other night, who knows what might have happened. Kevin, I owe you for this. Just name your price, and if it's within my power, I'll do it. How about I become your girlfriend?"

At that moment, the sun shone on Fiona's face, enveloping her in a hazy glow, making Kevin feel as though he were gazing up at her. This girl always seemed different, completely unlike the other girls he usually interacted with. Especially when she fixed her clear, bright eyes on him, he felt as if all his secrets were laid bare before her.

"Fiona, stop joking around," Maurice slightly frowned and shot her daughter a look, then turned to Kevin with a gentle smile, "Kevin, stay for dinner tonight. What do you want to eat? I’ll cook for you, and I'll call Fiona's dad to come home as well. It's a good opportunity for our family to get together before school starts."

Since the incident where Kevin carried her to the hospital, Maurice had begun treating him like one of her own. The more she saw of Kevin, the more she liked him. Though Kevin's family wasn't particularly affluent, he was an excellent student, humble, cautious, and composed—qualities rare among youth. Most importantly, he could connect with her daughter Fiona, who usually held herself above others, especially those from political families, yet had taken a liking to Kevin. It was a rarity for someone to be admired by their entire family.

"This…" Seeing how serious Maurice was, Kevin hesitated. After all, Maurice was the wife of the deputy county magistrate, and their family background was strong, even more so than Daisy's. In their hometown, they were at the pinnacle of social hierarchy. Even ordinary department-level officials would show deference to Maurice. Being invited to such a dinner was truly rare. However, as just a student, Kevin didn't see it as an opportunity but rather felt immense pressure, especially with Armando being present.

Seeing Kevin's hesitation, Fiona pouted and said, "If you don't want to come, then forget it. It's not like I care!"

Just as Kevin was about to reluctantly agree, he heard a familiar voice behind him. Turning around, he saw Laura and Daisy walking in through the gate. Laura wore a white dress, white ankle socks, and black Mary Janes, carrying a violin case. Her legs were slender and full of youthful vigor, like a delicate princess. Beside her, Daisy wore a black dress that accentuated her voluptuous figure, her ample bosom and rounded hips exuding mature allure. The two of them standing together presented a stunning contrast, one like a fresh lotus in summer, the other like an autumn chrysanthemum, both breathtakingly beautiful.

Kevin couldn't help but compare Daisy and Maurice in his mind. Both women had the highest social status among those he knew, embodying a dignified and elegant demeanor that commanded respect. Daisy, with her dancer's background and conscious maintenance, had a slightly superior figure and appearance. In contrast, Maurice's fuller figure, coupled with her sophisticated air, gave her a sense of gravitas and authority, though her recent illness added a touch of mortal vulnerability.

"Kevin, why are you here?" Laura asked excitedly, walking over. "Why didn't you call me ahead of time? Have you been waiting long? I was just at my violin lesson."

Laura assumed Kevin had come specifically to see her, making him feel a bit awkward. He had been so preoccupied with spending time with his cousin that he had nearly forgotten about Laura. Reflecting on it, he realized how unscrupulous he had been, professing love for his cousin while entangled with other women, even having just been with Kimberly. Perhaps he wasn't such a good student after all.

Maurice and Daisy, being neighbors, naturally knew each other and exchanged greetings. Maurice then turned to Laura with a smile, "Laura, do you know Kevin?"

"Mrs. Maurice, we're classmates," Laura replied shyly, her cheeks flushing a delicate red.

"Oh, I see." Maurice nodded, observing Laura's affection for Kevin. She thought to herself that it was no surprise so many girls were drawn to Kevin, given his outstanding qualities. Even her own daughter had been moved by him.

"When did Fiona get back?" Daisy asked Fiona with a smile. "I heard you vacationed in Antarctica alone. You're much braver than Laura. She needs me to accompany her everywhere and isn't independent at all."

"Fiona's a bit of a tomboy. She's not like your Laura," Maurice replied with a slight smile. "I prefer Laura's quiet demeanor—girls should act like girls, don't you think, Kevin?"

At that moment, all eyes turned to Kevin, with both Fiona and Laura looking at him expectantly. Kevin instantly felt overwhelmed, despairing at how replying either way might offend someone. It was as if Maurice had set him up on purpose.

Just as Kevin found himself in a tight spot, his phone rang. It was his mother, Bethany, calling, asking him to visit his godmother, Grace, at the dress shop.
