Chapter 856: Long Night of Confessions
"Beep... beep... beep..." The phone rang, but no one answered. Kevin's heart sank. Was his cousin angry because he hadn't answered her call earlier?
"Hello..." Just as Kevin's heart was about to hit rock bottom, he heard Audrey's familiar voice, as sweet as heavenly music, instantly reviving him.
"Sis, I was on a call with a classmate earlier and didn't see your call," Kevin quickly explained, fearing Audrey might be angry.
"It's okay," Audrey said softly. "Kevin, how are you?"
"Not good, not good at all," Kevin replied without hesitation. "Sis, I miss you. I miss you so much."
"If you missed me, why didn't you call? Why did I have to call you first? You don't care about me at all," Audrey's question left Kevin speechless and a bit aggrieved. He had indeed wanted to call her, but thinking about her enjoying sweet moments with her husband, he didn't want to be a bother.
"Why aren't you saying anything? Did I hit the mark? You men are all liars, only caring about your own happiness and never considering others' feelings. How can you be so selfish?" Audrey vented her anger over the phone, though it was unclear if her anger was directed at Kevin or Lucas.
Kevin had never seen Audrey so angry. He didn't dare breathe loudly, let alone hang up. He obediently listened to her complaints, occasionally wanting to defend himself but finding no opportunity to speak. Eventually, he gave up, lying down on his bed and putting the phone on speaker. Despite the scolding, he felt a strange comfort hearing Audrey's voice.
These days, without seeing or hearing from Audrey, time had dragged on painfully. His indulgence with Evelyn and Vanessa was largely an attempt to numb himself and forget about Audrey.
Audrey had been unhappy in Starhaven, unable to vent her frustrations at her husband. Now, she let it all out on Kevin. After talking herself hoarse, she realized she might have taken it out on the wrong person. Kevin hadn't done anything wrong, yet he bore the brunt of her anger. Not hearing any response from his end, she wondered if she had scared him. "Kevin, are you still there?"
"Sis, I'm listening," Kevin said weakly, sitting up. "Are you done? Why don't you have some water and take a break? It's hot; don't get too worked up."
"You always have a smart mouth," Audrey said, feeling much better after venting. Seeing Kevin's submissive attitude, she felt even more apologetic. "Kevin, I was just feeling really down and took it out on you. Don't take it to heart."
"Sis, how could I be mad at you?" Kevin quickly said. "If you're upset, just tell me. Consider me your sounding board or punching bag. Yell at me or hit me as much as you need to feel better."
"Kevin, why are you so good to me?" Audrey choked up after a moment of silence. "I don't deserve it. I'm not a good woman. I lose my temper and act irrationally."
"It's not about deserving," Kevin said, sounding more mature than usual. Reflecting on their time together, he said, "Sis, I want to be good to you without needing a reason, just like you tolerated my immaturity and flaws. To me, you're the best woman in the world."
On the other end, Audrey's heart ached, tears streaming down her face. Kevin's words touched her deeply but also made her feel helpless. Why couldn't her husband Lucas say these things? Why did it have to be her cousin? Even a high schooler understood, but Lucas didn't. Sometimes, all a woman needs is a man's attitude, not grand explanations.
"Thank you, Kevin," Audrey said softly. "Talking to you makes me really happy and relaxed. When I was back home, I looked forward to coming to Starhaven every day. But now that I'm here, I regret it."
Hearing Audrey's words, Kevin knew she must have had a fight with Lucas. But since she didn't say anything, he didn't dare ask. Seeing his cousin so downcast, he deliberately sighed and said, "Sis, you're not trying to make me jealous, are you? I'd love to visit Starhaven for a few days, but I can't. Why don't you tell me what's fun there so I can live vicariously through you?"
"There's nothing much to do. It's just more crowded and the buildings are taller. Otherwise, it's not much different from Starfall Town," Audrey said, thinking for a moment. "Oh, but I do think Aetheria is quite nice. The scenery is beautiful, it's not too crowded, and it's not noisy. There's a famous little island there where you can see the ocean."
"Sis, you're making me want to go there," Kevin said dreamily, imagining walking hand-in-hand with Audrey on the beach, feeling the sea breeze, whispering sweet nothings, and sharing intimate moments in a seaside cabin.
"You can," Audrey said. "I met a friend in Aetheria who's a university professor. You could apply to a university there and stay for four years. I just visited a university there. It's beautiful, with a library, artificial lake, concert hall, swimming pool, and lots of pretty female students with great figures."
"Sis, stop teasing me," Kevin said with a grin. "No matter how good their figures are, they're not as good as yours. To me, you're the most beautiful woman in the world."
"Flatterer," Audrey said, blushing. "But seriously, the university is really good. It's one of the top universities in the country. You should consider it. If you want, I can ask my friend for more information."
"Yes, ma'am," Kevin said with a chuckle. "If you say it's good, it must be good. I'll apply there in the future."
"Alright, it's just a suggestion. It's up to you," Audrey said with a smile. "Besides, I don't even know if you'll choose arts or sciences. If you choose sciences, there's no point applying there."
Kevin remembered he had already told Alissa he would choose sciences. Feeling a bit awkward, he said, "Sis, I want to choose sciences. I've already told Mrs. Garcia. I'm sorry."
"It's fine. I was just suggesting," Audrey said gently. "Kevin, in two years, you'll be facing college entrance exams. These two years are crucial for you. Your efforts will determine your future. Make sure to cherish this time, okay?"
"Sis, is college that important?" Kevin asked, a bit dismissive. "I see successful people on TV saying ability is more important than education. Even celebrities don't have much education, but they still make a lot of money."
"You're not entirely wrong," Audrey said with a laugh. "But have you thought about how people judge someone's ability when it's intangible?"
"I haven't thought about that," Kevin admitted. "Maybe through tests. Whoever scores higher has more ability."
"Isn't that what college entrance exams are?" Audrey said, exasperated. "If someone truly has ability, they should easily pass the exams. The exams test not just intelligence but also overall qualities like self-control, memory, physical strength, and endurance. It's not a perfect system, but it's the most efficient and fair method we have. Other methods would just be exploited by those with connections. Do you have connections?"
"Alright," Kevin conceded, realizing he had oversimplified things. "Sis, you're truly a great teacher, better than my mom. If I said this to her, she'd just scold me without explaining."
"Your mom may not be reasonable," Audrey sighed. "But she's the one who selflessly supports your education without expecting anything in return. What good are others' arguments? Remember, the people who love you the most in this world are your parents. Their ways may not always be right, but their intentions are good."
"I understand," Kevin said. "That's why I can't be honest with them. It's easier talking to you."
"Then why didn't you call me? Why did I have to call you?" Audrey teased. "If I hadn't called today, would you have kept ignoring me?"
"Sis, I wasn't trying to upset you," Kevin said. "I really miss you, but I was afraid you'd be angry. Last time you called and I missed it, I called back but your phone was off."
Audrey was silent for a while. She knew Kevin hadn't done anything wrong. If he had called, she wouldn't have answered in her previous state, or if she did, she wouldn't have been warm. She understood his feelings of uncertainty. If she hadn't been feeling extremely down and needed someone to talk to, she wouldn't have called him tonight.
"I'm sorry. I was unreasonable," Audrey sighed. "Now you know, women can be irrational. Will you still like me?"
"I'll always like you," Kevin said without hesitation. "Sis, even if you never talk to me again, I'll still like you."
"Alright, I've recorded everything you said," Audrey laughed softly. "If you ever deny it, I'll play the recording for you."
"No problem, Sis," Kevin said with a grin. "If you're still worried, I'll write it down for you."
After that, they avoided heavy topics and chatted about trivial matters. Kevin told Audrey about his mother's plan to open a clothing store in Starfall Town. Audrey was very supportive, saying it was high time they moved to the city for better opportunities. The small town didn't have a large enough market.
Perhaps because they hadn't chatted in a long time, they talked late into the night. Kevin's phone grew hot from the prolonged call. He placed it on his pillow, closed his eyes, and listened to Audrey talk about her experiences in Starhaven, imagining himself walking with her through the city's streets.
"Sis, I really want to fly to Starhaven and be by your side," Kevin said, unable to hold back. "I miss your scent and holding you while we sleep."
"I think you just want to do something naughty," Audrey teased. "Is Mrs. Garcia not around? Are you feeling pent up again?"
"Sis, I'm about to explode down there," Kevin said, breathing heavily. Hearing Audrey's soft, alluring voice, he couldn't help but imagine her seductive expressions. He reached down, grasped his rock-hard penis, and started stroking it. "Can you help me finish?"
