Chapter 577 Eating BBQ

"Oh, I just came out of school and I'm heading home," Kevin said. "How about you?"

"I came out for some fresh air and to grab a bite to eat," Fiona said with a smile. "You haven't eaten yet, right? Perfect, let's eat together."

"No need, I'll just head home."

Kevin quickly declined. It's not that he didn't want to eat with Fiona, but he was tight on money. A meal with someone like Fiona, from a well-off family, would cost a few hundred dollars, which he couldn't afford.

"Why are you so nervous? I'm not asking you to pay," Fiona said, frowning as she saw Kevin about to leave. "Let me treat you, it's fine."

"That's not right, I should be the one treating you."

Kevin blushed. Letting a girl treat him felt embarrassing, especially someone like Fiona. At that moment, he was acutely aware of the difference between himself and Fiona.

"Come on, why be so dramatic," Fiona said, pulling Kevin to a nearby barbecue stall. "Let's eat here. I actually like barbecue, but my mom always stops me from eating it, saying it's not hygienic. But so many people eat it with no issues. I think she's just old-fashioned."

"Is this all you eat?"

Kevin was surprised. He never expected Fiona to eat at a roadside stall. He always thought a girl like Fiona wouldn't eat at such a messy place.

"What's the big deal? Don't be so surprised," Fiona smiled slightly, sitting on a stool. She called the owner over and said, "Boss, give us twenty lamb skewers... two bottles of beer, quick."

Watching Fiona confidently order, Kevin finally believed that she had indeed eaten barbecue before. He felt relieved knowing that a barbecue meal would only cost a few tens of dollars at most. He could always treat her to a meal in the future.

Soon, the waiter brought over the barbecue and beer. Fiona poured herself a glass of beer and poured one for Kevin as well. Raising her glass, she smiled and said, "I mainly enjoy barbecue because of the lively atmosphere. Eating at home is too quiet. My dad is often not home for meals, and my mom occasionally goes back to the city. It's just me at home with the nanny, quite boring."

Kevin couldn't help but say, "You could stay in the city for school. The school you're in is much worse than the ones in the city."

Fiona took a sip of beer, touched her lips, and smiled gently. "Kevin, there are things you don't quite understand. For me, where I go to school doesn't make much of a difference. I'll definitely get into a good university in the future. Even if I don't, my dad will arrange it for me. So whether I work hard or not, the outcome won't change. Do you think that's unfair?"

Kevin shook his head. Unfair things were something he had seen a lot of. Fiona was not the only one. Ivan had poor grades but still became a class monitor. Albert didn't like studying, but Evelyn spent money on his training and summer camps, and his English was better than Kevin's. Perhaps from the moment of birth, the gap between people had already widened.

"I'm just telling you these things," Fiona sighed helplessly. "If I tell others, they'll just think I'm being overly dramatic, not appreciating my good fortune. But I really don't like this kind of arranged life. Waking up every day knowing what I'll be like in ten years is terrifying. I actually envy you, no pressure, just living a simple life every day, how nice."

"Who says I have no pressure?" Kevin drank a glass of beer and poured out his grievances to Fiona. "I have as much pressure as you do. My mom works hard day and night, sacrificing to earn money, not buying clothes for years just to put me through school. She hopes I can get into a good university. Sometimes I feel really sorry for her. She's been through so much hardship these years, placing all her hopes on me. I can't bear to disappoint her."

"All parents are the same," Fiona said with a hint of melancholy, clinking glasses with Kevin and saying, "Come on, let's toast to our tough high school lives. I only have one more year to endure, but you still have two more."

"What schools are you planning to apply to?" Kevin asked curiously. Someone like Fiona from a well-off family should at least aim for a top-tier university.

"I haven't decided yet, but I want to go to the South, far away from here," Fiona said thoughtfully. "But the South is too hot, I'm afraid I won't adapt."

"You could go abroad for college."

Kevin suggested that many wealthy people send their children abroad for studies, including government officials. Although many end up in mediocre foreign universities, with proper arrangements, they can still graduate and find good jobs.

"Studying abroad is very expensive, tens of thousands of dollars per year. My family doesn't have that kind of money," Fiona gave Kevin a look, saying indignantly, "You really think my dad is corrupt. Let me tell you, my dad has never taken a penny of bribes in his position. Believe it or not."

"I believe you. My bad. I'll drink as a penalty."

Kevin raised his glass and finished it in one go. While he felt Fiona's father couldn't be completely clean, he sensed that Fiona was being sincere, not lying.

Perhaps due to the alcohol, Kevin and Fiona both loosened up compared to before. They chatted lively, freely commenting on teachers and students at school, with Fiona mostly talking and Kevin listening.

Across the street, a white BMW slowly pulled over. The window rolled down, and Natalie, watching Kevin and Fiona chatting and laughing at the small table, showed a surprised expression. She was infuriated but also somewhat relieved. She almost let Kevin deceive her, claiming his relationship with Fiona wasn't good, yet here they were, having barbecue together late at night.

However, Natalie was also somewhat glad. It seemed she had hit the jackpot with Kevin. She needed to hold onto him tightly if she wanted to climb up to Armando's level in the future. She looked at Kevin, still chatting happily with Fiona, a confident smile playing on her lips. With her skills, winning over a high school boy was no problem at all. It just depended on whether it was worth it.
