Chapter 578: Closed Door Rejection
Kevin and Fiona kept eating until 10 o'clock in the evening. Fiona was still not satisfied and said she would like to have barbecue and beer with Kevin in the future when they have time.
Seeing Fiona drunk, Kevin had to hail a taxi to send Fiona back to an expensive residential area. Fiona's home was in a separate courtyard at the innermost part of the residential area, with seven or eight small buildings where the county's main leaders lived.
Kevin helped Fiona to the front of the third small building, knocked on the door, and soon the door opened. Standing at the door was a middle-aged beauty, wearing a black silk nightgown, tall and plump, with a dignified temperament and picturesque features. She bore a striking resemblance to Fiona, except for a beauty mark on the right corner of her mouth, adding a mature and charming touch. The middle-aged beauty was Fiona's mother, Maurice, who worked as the chairwoman of the labor union at the County Cultural Bureau. She had little work at the office and mostly stayed at home doing housework.
"Fiona, what's going on?" Maurice frowned upon seeing the drunken Fiona. "Fiona, why did you drink so much? By the way, who are you? I haven't seen you before."
"Hello, Auntie, I'm Fiona's classmate," Kevin explained quickly upon seeing Maurice's displeasure. "I ran into Fiona tonight, and she insisted on taking me out for barbecue, but ended up drinking too much."
"This child, a girl drinking so much," Maurice looked Kevin up and down, and said somewhat coldly, "Alright, you should go back now."
With that, she took Fiona inside and closed the door with a bang. Kevin felt a bit rejected and frustrated, realizing that Fiona's mother was not very welcoming towards him. However, he understood that any mother would not be happy to see her daughter being brought home drunk by someone. He glanced at the closed door, turned around, and walked away.
Maurice helped her daughter lie down on the sofa and made her a cup of honey water in the kitchen. After a while, Fiona woke up and saw her mother staring at her in silence. She couldn't help but ask, "Mom, what are you doing here?"
Maurice said indignantly, "Fiona, tell me the truth. Who was the guy who brought you back just now? You said you wanted to go out for some fresh air, but ended up drinking with someone. If people find out that the leader's daughter went out drinking, it's not proper."
"Mom, you're being harsh," Fiona frowned and said, "I'm an adult now, don't I have any freedom? That guy is just a friend, we just had dinner outside."
"Are you dating him?" Maurice asked, "Fiona, don't let these young boys deceive you. Nowadays, boys are cunning, they easily take girls to hotel rooms. You must be careful and not trust others easily."
"We are really just friends," Fiona said helplessly, "He is a student from Class 57 in the first year, named Kevin. We barely know each other. Besides, I invited him to dinner, it's not a big deal."
"Is that so?" Maurice said half-believingly, "Fiona, I have to be strict with you because of your identity. Your father is the Deputy County Mayor, and many people are watching him. If they can't find your father, they will come to me, or even to you. You must be careful and not trust others easily."
"I understand, Mom," Fiona smiled slightly and said, "I can't speak for others, but Kevin is definitely not that kind of person. You don't know, last time when I sprained my ankle coming back from the city, he carried me home. I invited him in, but he didn't come in and left."
"What, he was the one who brought you back last time?" Maurice was taken aback, feeling a bit embarrassed. "Why didn't you say so earlier? I was quite rude to him just now. I should thank him properly."
"It's okay, Mom. I'll invite him to our house another day, it's never too late to thank him," Fiona said with a smile, "I just hope Kevin will agree to come."
"What? You're the daughter of a leader, and you're so beautiful. Why would he hesitate?" Maurice suddenly became displeased and said, "I think he's just playing hard to get."
"Mum, why are you here again?" Fiona stood up and walked upstairs, saying, "I don't feel like explaining. I want to go to bed."
Watching Fiona go upstairs, Maurice knew her daughter was upset. She sighed and returned to her bedroom, feeling curious about this boy named Kevin. After all, Fiona had been in school for two years and rarely went out to dinner alone with a boy, especially so late at night. Although Fiona denied being in a relationship with him, Maurice couldn't take it lightly and decided to investigate Kevin's background another day.
By the time Kevin returned home, it was already past ten o'clock. His mother, Bethany, was in the living room and greeted him with some dissatisfaction, "Kevin, you're back so late. You should rest early in the future and not tire yourself out."
"I understand, Mom," Kevin smiled and said, "Isn't the exam coming up soon? I need to prepare well and aim for a good grade."
