Chapter 740: Romantic Moments in the Movie Theater
"Kevin!" Suddenly, Lucy's loud shout startled Kevin, who was lost in his thoughts. He looked at Lucy in confusion and asked, "Huh, what did you say?"
"Laura asked if you want to go watch a movie. Why are you so unresponsive?" Lucy said impatiently. "Always daydreaming, aren't you?"
"Let's go." Seeing Laura's expectant expression, Kevin quickly agreed. After all, this was Laura's first time inviting him, and it wouldn't be right to be too indifferent. Besides, Lucy was there too, so it shouldn't be too awkward.
Soon, the three of them arrived at the city movie theater. The theater was located on a street in front of the government building, which used to be the liveliest place. Whenever there was a movie showing, it would be packed with people.
However, in recent years, the theater had been struggling. The profits were declining, and they couldn't even pay their employees' salaries. Eventually, it was leased to an individual who would occasionally show some outdated popular movies.
Seeing Laura heading to the ticket counter, Kevin quickly stepped forward and said, "Laura, let me handle this. You treated me to ice cream earlier, so let me pay for the movie." Evelyn, Albert's mother, had given Kevin a few hundred dollars, and Alissa had given him a thousand-dollar shopping card. Kevin had been reluctant to spend them, planning to use them to buy New Year goods for his family. But today was the first time he was going to the movies with Laura, and he couldn't let the girl pay. Otherwise, he would seem like a freeloader, especially with Lucy there.
"Sure, Kevin, show us a good time today. Laura and I will wait for you at the entrance," Lucy said cheerfully.
Lucy, with a smile, led Laura towards the entrance of the theater. The two girls were wearing pretty dresses, their youthful legs exuding vitality. Their fair and smooth skin gave off a different vibe from mature women, making Kevin, who was used to being around older women, feel a unique flutter, perhaps the kind of excitement that teenagers should experience.
"Boss, three tickets, please." Kevin took out a hundred dollars from his pocket and handed it over.
"One ticket is forty, three tickets are a hundred and twenty, you're twenty short," the lady inside said indifferently.
"Forty dollars? That's expensive." Kevin hadn't been to the movies in a long time, and he remembered tickets costing no more than Eighteen dollars. But seeing Laura and Lucy waiting at the entrance, he gritted his teeth and handed over another twenty dollars for three tickets. It felt a bit painful, but he realized that the school's decision to prohibit student relationships was quite wise.
In this society, without money, one couldn't even date with confidence. Kevin suddenly felt he should find a way to earn some money. He remembered the first time he went shopping with Audrey and how she had scolded him for not being able to support himself, not even being able to afford the high heels she wanted.
Perhaps Audrey had done that to make Kevin focus on his studies. After their relationship deepened, Audrey never mentioned it again. But Kevin had always resented it, feeling unworthy of being with Audrey.
As a high school student, what could he do to earn money? He couldn't possibly help elementary school students with their summer homework. Kevin pondered this as he approached the entrance of the theater.
Laura and Lucy were chatting while holding a large bucket of popcorn. When they saw Kevin approaching, Laura handed the popcorn to him and shyly said, "Kevin, this is for you."
"How can I accept this?" Kevin quickly declined. "I won't eat it. You two enjoy."
"No, we'll share one." Laura blushed and said, "You're a guy, you need more."
"Can you two stop showing affection? I can't take it anymore," Lucy said, feeling annoyed. She had just found out today that Laura and Kevin were secretly dating. She was surprised because Laura had many admirers, even in Class 57, there were over a dozen boys who had pursued her, including rich kids. Lucy thought Laura and Kevin were a good match. Laura was the top student in her grade and the class monitor, while Kevin was the English class representative with good grades. Although Kevin's family background wasn't great, Laura didn't seem to mind.
"Lucy, why are you saying that? So annoying," Laura, with a thin skin, was nervous on her first date with Kevin. She couldn't bear Lucy's teasing and pouted, feeling shy and flustered. Kevin, watching her, felt a bit dazed and even began to seriously consider whether he should make Laura his girlfriend.
"OK, just kidding."
Lucy quickly took Laura's hand and walked towards the theater, while Kevin followed with the popcorn. The theater was spacious, with four to five hundred seats, but at the moment, there were only a few dozen audience members, making it seem a bit desolate.
This was Kevin's first time watching a movie with a girl, and he was a bit excited. Despite having been intimate with several older women, he still felt more relaxed and comfortable around peers, especially with Laura and Lucy, two energetic and beautiful girls.
The three of them found seats in the front row, with Laura in the middle and Kevin and Lucy on either side. The movie hadn't started yet, and Laura and Lucy were chatting about girly things. Kevin, munching on popcorn, didn't find it boring. However, the narrow seats in the old theater made him uncomfortable due to his large frame. In the darkness, Kevin discreetly admired Laura's face under the changing light from the screen. She couldn't move and had to let Kevin continue holding her hand while nervously watching the movie. Despite Kevin promising to be her boyfriend, he had been distant these past few days. Today, she finally felt that Kevin had acknowledged her.
