Chapter 794: Her Boyfriend
Audrey was also taken aback. She recognized the man in front of her as Mark, the captain of the criminal investigation team. She was both nervous and puzzled. How could Kevin, a high school student, know Mark? Thinking back to when he also knew the bar owner, Natalie, her curiosity grew even stronger.
"It's these three," Kevin pointed at the men in front of him. "They took photos of my cousin without permission. When I asked them to delete the pictures, they refused and used foul language. They also claimed to be connected to some gang, saying that his brother Herbert is a gang leader with dozens of lives on his hands and that he killed two people yesterday. I don't know if it's true, so I called the police."
"Oh?" Mark raised an eyebrow, suddenly interested. He had been keeping an eye on the gang for a long time, wanting to eliminate the city's biggest scourge. Jasper was cunning and had deep connections with various city factions, making it difficult to take him down. If he could find a breakthrough with these men, it would be a great opportunity.
The three men panicked. They never expected Kevin to actually call the police, and not just any police—four patrol cars and eight officers, all looking at them like hungry wolves eyeing sheep.
The leader was on the verge of tears. "It's just a few photos. Did you really need to call so many police?" Seeing Mark's stern expression, he quickly explained, "Sir, don't listen to this kid. We're good people, not connected to any gang. He just wants to get back at us because we looked at his cousin."
The other two also pleaded their innocence. The city had been cracking down on crime recently, and being mistaken for gang members could land them in serious trouble.
"Enough," Mark said, waving his hand with a slight smile. "We won’t wrongfully accuse good people, but we also won’t let bad people go. Show me your IDs."
The three men obediently handed over their IDs. Mark glanced at the middle one and said, "Your name is Marcus?"
The man, trying to be friendly, pulled out a cigarette. "Sir, this is just a misunderstanding with this young man. I have a friend at the police station. Can we just let this go?"
"Don't bother," Mark said dismissively. "Do you have a brother named Herbert?"
Marcus hesitated before nodding.
"Is he in a gang? Has he killed people?"
"No, he just works for someone. I don't know the details. We don’t keep in touch much," Marcus stammered, regretting mentioning his brother Herbert, which now seemed like a hot potato.
"Alright, call your brother now. I need to ask him a few questions," Mark said, smiling. "Don't worry, it's just standard procedure. Since there’s a report, we need to follow up. If you're uncomfortable, we can go back to the station for a formal statement."
Marcus wanted to make excuses, but hearing that Mark was from the criminal investigation team, he turned pale and shakily dialed his brother's number. Herbert's phone was off.
"Can't reach him?" Mark asked, half-smiling. "Looks like you'll have to come with us for further investigation."
One of the younger men panicked and said to Mark, "Officer, I have nothing to do with him. I was just waiting for my girlfriend to get off work. I want to report that Marcus often brags about his brother being in a gang, collecting protection money, and being close to Jasper."
"Is that so? What's your name and what do you do?" Mark asked, his sharp eyes scrutinizing the young man, making it hard for anyone but the most hardened criminals to withstand his gaze.
"My name is Mitchell. I run a seafood store in the square," the young man stammered.
Mark asked the other man a few questions, realizing that the only useful lead might be Marcus's brother Herbert. He hoped this line might provide evidence against Jasper.
"Mitchell, what are you doing?" a voice suddenly called out. Kevin looked up to see a familiar figure approaching—it was his neighbor, Doris. He wondered if Mitchell was Doris's boyfriend.
Indeed, Mitchell's face lit up when he saw Doris. He said to Mark, "Officer, this is my girlfriend. She works as a network administrator at the arcade nearby. I was just waiting for her to get off work."
Doris approached, looking nervous at the sight of so many police officers. Mark explained the situation to her.
After hearing the story, Doris glared at Mitchell and then turned to Kevin, saying apologetically, "Kevin, this guy just likes to cause trouble. He doesn't mean any harm. Could you please ask the police not to take him away?"
Kevin didn't want to escalate the situation. His main target was Marcus, and seeing Doris plead, he turned to Mark and asked, "What do you think we should do?"
"As long as both parties agree to reconcile, I won't pursue it further," Mark said with a laugh. If not for Kevin's call, this Youth issue wouldn't have warranted the attention of the criminal investigation team.
Mitchell breathed a sigh of relief and couldn't help but glance at the tall, elegant Audrey beside Kevin. Who knew that admiring a beautiful woman could cause so much trouble?
Marcus tried to slip away, but Mark stopped him, saying, "Marcus, you can't leave yet. Please cooperate and tell us about your brother Herbert."
"Officer, you've got the wrong man. I'm a good person," Marcus protested, but two officers flanked him and escorted him to a patrol car.
Mark patted Kevin's shoulder and said warmly, "Kevin, don't call 911 for these things. It affects our work. If you have trouble, call me directly. Do you have a phone?"
"Yes," Kevin said, quickly saving Mark's number. He felt triumphant. Having the criminal investigation captain's number was better than calling 911. In this city, few would dare to cross Mark, making Kevin feel invincible.
Before leaving, Mark glanced at Audrey again, nodding with a smile. He was relieved that she hadn't been harmed by the criminals. He had visited Violet in the hospital yesterday.
Violet had been in a terrible state when admitted—her lower body severely swollen, her genitals inflamed and torn, and bite marks on her breasts. The officers were furious, wanting to execute the perpetrators on the spot.
After treatment, Violet's physical wounds had mostly healed, but her mental state was fragile. She needed sleeping pills to rest and couldn't see strangers. Full recovery would take a long time. Mark had left a thousand dollars for her care.
If this beautiful teacher had also been harmed, it would have been a regret for Mark. But seeing her now, seemingly out of the shadow, made him feel relieved.
As a captain, he had seen many horrific crimes, hardening his heart. Yet he still hoped to protect the good in the world from being destroyed by evil.
The four patrol cars roared away. Doris glared at Mitchell, saying, "I told you not to hang out with Marcus. His brother is a thug, and he's no better. You never listen. If Kevin didn't know the police, you'd be in big trouble."
Mitchell felt wronged. It was Kevin who called the police, but he now dared not underestimate him. Smiling, he said, "Doris, don't be mad. I was just waiting for you. Marcus insisted on chatting. I promise not to talk to him again. If I do, I'm a dog."
"Even if you were a turtle, I wouldn't care," Doris snapped, then turned to Audrey and hesitantly asked, "Kevin, who is this?"
"Oh, she's my cousin, an English teacher at school," Kevin quickly introduced. "Sis, this is Doris, our neighbor. She used to take care of me when I was little."
"Hello, I'm Audrey," Audrey said with a smile, extending her hand to Doris. Mitchell also extended his hand eagerly, and after a moment's hesitation, Audrey shook it briefly.
Mitchell was thrilled, his eyes darting to Audrey's ample chest. He thought her breasts were enormous, like two large grapefruits, making Doris's look like small buns in comparison.
"Kevin, I'm really sorry about today. If not for your help, Mitchell might have been taken away," Doris said gratefully. "I just got off work. Why don't we have dinner together?"
"Um..." Audrey hesitated, looking at Kevin, unsure of Doris's relationship with him.
"There's no need for dinner. It was nothing," Kevin quickly said. He was eager to spend a quiet evening with Audrey.
"It won't take long, just a simple meal," Doris insisted, glancing at Audrey. "I'm not inviting you; it's to apologize to Kevin. Mitchell, apologize to Kevin, or we're done."
Mitchell, fearing he might lose Doris, quickly said, "Kevin, I'm sorry for today. I shouldn't have been with Marcus. Please forgive me," and even slapped himself.
Kevin was taken aback by Mitchell's harsh self-punishment. Though Mitchell seemed sincere, Kevin still found him untrustworthy and wondered why Doris liked him.
"Alright, you don't need to do that," Audrey said, startled by Mitchell's action. She decided to accept his apology, not wanting to seem petty.
Mitchell was visibly relieved, and the tension eased as they prepared to head to dinner together.
