Chapter 1142: Have You Been to the Spa?
"Mrs. Johnson, what are you thinking so deeply about?" Vanessa suddenly approached with a playful smile. "Your face is flushed. Are you missing your husband?"
"Oh, please. It's you who's being naughty," Audrey teased Vanessa, "What's the point? Unlike you, I can't see my husband every day."
"I can't see him now either. He's gone to the countryside, won't be back for ten days or more," Vanessa chuckled. "But strangely, I find peace being alone now. Being together for a long time only leads to arguments. It's better this way. I simply can't be bothered to see him. Just like you, a woman of solitude."
"Well, it's not the same. At least you two can meet whenever you want, unlike me, who can only make a phone call," Audrey sighed softly. She had long hoped for her husband Jason to return to the city. However, after the Starhaven incident and the USB debacle, she had lost all expectations of his return. "Are you pretending not to know?" Vanessa grinned mischievously. "You've only been married for a few years. Your desires must be strong. My husband and I used to spend nearly every night together, doing it three or four times. Now that we've had a child, things have dulled down."
Observing Vanessa, Audrey pondered on what Vanessa truly thought. Vanessa's remarks seemed to suggest a good relationship with her husband, yet rumors of her involvement with other male teachers persisted. If Vanessa truly had no interest in her husband, why would she bear his child? It all seemed quite peculiar to Audrey.
"But Mrs. Johnson, you don't seem like someone who has been separated from her husband for so long," Vanessa remarked, admiring Audrey's flawless complexion. Running her hand over Audrey's arm, Vanessa enviously noted, "Your skin is so smooth and blemish-free, your complexion radiant. It's obvious you've been cared for by a man. Come on, admit it, are you seeing someone else?"
"Don't talk nonsense," Audrey's heart skipped a beat, keeping a calm facade. "I've been going to the spa for skincare recently, so my skin has improved a bit."
"Is that so? I go too, but why doesn't my skin look as good as yours?" Vanessa persisted. She had always suspected that there was something unusual about Audrey's relationship with Kevin. Considering Kevin's character, it was hard to believe he could resist his attractive cousin. Despite her efforts to uncover the truth through Vanessa's queries, Kevin remained tight-lipped. This left Vanessa frustrated, and as for Audrey, she maintained an impenetrable façade. These two were indeed skilled at keeping secrets.
Vanessa's keenness to confirm the relationship between Audrey and Kevin was, in reality, an effort to exert more control over Kevin. Leveraging Angus's influence would help her advance her ambitions beyond Sunset Valley High School. Although her status in the high school was secure, her ambitions now aimed higher. She no longer found Sunset Valley High School appealing and even looked beyond the city. Vanessa desired to use Angus's power to expand into the city. "Mrs. Johnson, let's go to the spa tonight," Vanessa suggested, shifting topics as she noticed Audrey's reluctance to address her previous question.
"Tonight..." Audrey hesitated. She had been sleeping alone at home in recent days, and there was no particular reason not to go. However, she was not accustomed to getting too close to colleagues, especially Vanessa. Even though her relationship with Vanessa had improved, it wouldn't immediately become intimate.
At that moment, David walked in and said, "Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Jones, glad to catch you both. I have news for you. Our school's essay competition will be starting soon. Please announce it to your students and encourage those interested to prepare, especially the top writers in class."
"Mr. Carter, we know," Vanessa grinned, "To be honest, August from our class is probably enough. Notifying the others won't make a difference."
"No, everyone needs to be informed," David stated firmly, "Sunset Valley High School will select the top three in the essay competition to represent the school in the city-wide selection. The first place winner will also compete in the city contest. Furthermore, the school will reward the coaching teachers."
"Really?" Vanessa's eyes lit up. She eagerly grabbed David's arm and coquettishly asked, "Mr. Carter, tell us more about the rewards. What exactly are they? It would help us make plans."
Caught off guard by Vanessa's captivating touch and questioning eyes, David's breathing quickened. Seeing Audrey observing, he blushed and tactfully pulled away from Vanessa's grasp, clearing his throat. "I'm not entirely sure about the specific rewards, but there will be a cash prize. "Don't worry, Mr. Carter, we're not fools," Vanessa subtly threw David a flirty glance, leaving him dazed with her alluring charm as she exited the office.
After David left, Vanessa smugly remarked, "Mrs. Johnson, I might just have lucked out this time. Having a top writer in our class is quite an advantage."
Audrey felt somewhat helpless. Although Class 56's overall English performance surpassed that of Class 55, the essay competition wasn't about the average performance. While Sean's work was decent, he fell short compared to Kevin or August. This time, Vanessa's luck had truly shone through.
