Chapter 196 Show Me What You Got

Jason was buzzing with excitement, way more than usual. "Babe, you won't believe it. I've been hanging out with this big shot from London. Dude's loaded. I did a little errand for him, just delivered some stuff, and he handed me ten grand. Ten grand! Back home, that'd take me months to make."

Audrey listened, but instead of feeling thrilled, she felt a knot in her stomach. Was it really that easy to make money down south? She thought Jason might be stretching the truth, but the money he sent was real enough. "Jason, making money's great and all, but you can't do anything shady. You could end up in jail."

"Relax, I got this," Jason brushed off her worries. "How's work? Any trouble at school?"

Audrey's mind flashed to the blackmail from Principal Jones, the masked creep, and almost getting raped by Quentin. She wanted to spill everything, but she didn't want to stress Jason out. Forcing a smile, she said, "I'm good. Everything's fine. Oh, and I got promoted to a mid-level position. Extra five hundred a month."

Audrey's base salary was over eight grand, and with all the extras, she pulled in about nine thousand a month. That extra five hundred was a nice bump. Teachers like Alissa, who also did class advisor stuff, got extra perks too. Since Oliver became principal, he upped the benefits for everyone. End-of-year bonuses were better, making teachers like Audrey solidly middle to upper-middle class. With two vacations a year, some teachers even tutored during breaks to make extra cash. They weren't getting rich, but they were living comfortably.

Seeing Audrey's excited look, Jason scoffed, "Seriously? You're hyped over five hundred bucks? Our boss drops five grand on a single meal. His watch? Over a hundred thousand. Even his socks cost thousands. I'm not kidding. But you wouldn't get it. When you come here for summer vacation, I'll show you around. Staying at that school is making you dull. Once you see the world, you'll realize your hometown is nothing but a bunch of frogs in a well. When I hit it big and buy a mansion, I'll bring you here, and you'll never have to go back to that dump."

As Jason painted this grand future, Audrey frowned. Her husband had always been money-focused, but now it seemed like it was all he cared about. Sure, the South was more developed than their inland hometown, but it was still home. He'd only been there a few months and already looked down on it. She worried that if he stayed longer, he might start looking down on her too.

Jason kept rambling until he noticed Audrey's silence. "Why am I the only one talking? What's up? Are you stunned by what I'm saying? When I first got here, I felt like an idiot. Couldn't understand anything. Now I see it wasn't me; it was the place. Spend every day with idiots, you become one. I'm not bragging, but in three years, when I come back, the mayor will have to greet me. The deputy mayor won't cut it. Then you'll live the good life with me."

Audrey felt even more uneasy. Her husband hadn't even made it big yet and was already changing. If he ever became a billionaire, who would he still care about? She'd just be a trophy in his life. But seeing his excited, slightly flushed face, she didn't know what to say. After a moment, she said, "Jason, your dad got sick last month. I took him to the county hospital. It's nothing serious, just his old condition acting up. The doctor said he needs to take his meds regularly and rest. I didn't tell you because I didn't want you to worry. You should call him when you have time."

"Oh, it's fine. My big brother's there," Jason replied, frowning a bit.

Realizing he might've sounded cold, he added, "Tell you what, buy some supplements this weekend and visit him for me. Let him know I'm busy but I'll visit soon."

Audrey sighed and agreed. Jason's dad lived in the village, and his mom had passed away a few years ago. Jason had an older brother who farmed in town. Even though Jason was the youngest, he didn't get along with his dad, so he rarely visited after they got married. It was Audrey who often called and checked in, doing her duty as a daughter-in-law. Seeing Jason's indifferent attitude, Audrey knew she'd have to give up her rest time to visit her father-in-law.

After chatting a bit more, Jason ran out of things to brag about and went quiet. Just as Audrey was about to turn off the webcam, Jason grinned and said, "Honey, you look really sexy tonight. Can you take off your clothes and let me have a good look?"
