Kevin was acting kinda off all morning. By the time fourth period rolled around, Audrey, who had him in her class, noticed he was totally spaced out. Kevin knew Audrey was sharp, and he sighed, feeling the weight of his problems. "My mom took off again this morning."
Audrey's expression softened, and she felt a bit guilty. She hadn't realized that was why Kevin was distracted. "Oh, Kevin, I'm sorry. I didn't know. Don't be too hard on Bethany. She's been through a lot, raising you alone and running a company. She's doing it all for you."
"I get it, I really do," Kevin sighed. "I'll focus more in class. I don't want to worry her."
"That's the spirit," Audrey said with a smile, patting his head. "So, what do you want to eat? I'll make it for you."

"How am I sitting around? When you're not home, I'm the one doing all the housework," Zachary shot back. "Do you think you're so great now that you're a deputy supervisor? Do you look down on me? Are you thinking of divorcing me?"
"Zachary, don't be ridiculous. I never said I wanted a divorce," Alissa huffed. "You're being unreasonable."
"Gotcha, didn't I? Last semester, I knew something was up. You couldn't stand me touching you at night," Zachary sneered. "Are you screwing one of the young teachers? Did the principal fuck you to get you that promotion?"
"Don't piss me off!" Alissa snapped, slamming her phone down. Her chest was heaving with anger, and her face had gone pale. Zachary had really hit a nerve. "Kevin, what flavor do you want?" Audrey asked, smiling as she held Kevin's hand inside a burger joint at the intersection. "Chicken, beef, fish, bacon, shrimp… they have everything."
"I'll take a beef burger and a bacon cheeseburger," Kevin decided after a moment. "Audrey, what about you? Today, it's on me."
"Do you even have money?" Audrey gave him a skeptical look.
"Of course I do. My mom just gave me my allowance for the semester yesterday," Kevin said proudly, patting his chest. "Audrey, get whatever you want."
"Really? Well, in that case…" Audrey smiled charmingly and ordered a small portion of fries, a fruit salad, and two Diet Coke.
"Audrey, is that all you're getting? Don't worry about saving money," Kevin said, a bit concerned. "My mom gave me plenty of money, enough for both of us."
"Kevin, Bethany works hard for that money. We shouldn't waste it," Audrey said with a slight smile. "Besides, I'm on a diet. I can't eat too many calories. You're still growing, so you need to eat more."
