Chapter 223 Doing Something Meaningful Late at Night
A faint inquiry, with a hint of skepticism and an indescribable, muffled intimacy.
It seemed as if he could see through her impure thoughts, causing her mind to wander.
Anna blushed as she took the tissue, interrupting and answering at the same time, "No, I just think food without spice is too boring; it affects my mood."
He had said that when she lied, her eyelashes fluttered, and her gaze flittered.
Wasn't she doing exactly that at the moment?
Giorgio smiled without a word, elegantly picking up a slice of meat and grilling his own food.
He didn't speak, but that aura of seeing through everything made Anna feel so embarrassed.
Ah, what's been wrong with her these past few days?!
After dinner, Charlie took Penny's little hand as they went upstairs, "Anna, you will be leaving soon, I want to sleep with Penny tonight; you can sleep with Daddy." He spoke with mischief, like he was trying to hide something.
Penny agreed enthusiastically, "Mommy, we kids have secrets too; you can't disturb us."
With that, the two little rascals ran off.
Anna was speechless; could their matchmaking be any more obvious?
What was more troubling was that, though Giorgio's villa was large, it seemed designed to keep outsiders at bay. There were only two bedrooms; the other rooms all had different functions.
That meant she either had to convince the two little rascals or she had to sleep next to Giorgio.
"What are you standing there thinking about? Surely you don't think I would have designs on a woman during her period?" A voice echoed in the corridor.
Anna turned her head to see Giorgio coming up with a bottle of warm milk.
At this moment, he was dressed in a beige, simple round-neck sweater and black casual pants, having shed the high and mighty suits he usually adorned. Without his regal suits, he looked differently soft, with a domestic man's charm.
She awkwardly denied, "It's not that, I was just..."
"Just what?" Giorgio interrupted her. He walked towards her and stopped very close, his deep black eyes locking onto hers, "Just like you told Sara; are you looking forward to something happening between us? Hmm?"
"!!!"
She hadn't! She had said it was an excuse at the time! Why was he still holding onto this issue?!
"I don't want to talk to you." After firing back, she turned and walked straight into the room.
Every conversation with him felt like a trap, impossible to explain.
Giorgio watched her figure as a faint smile played on his lips. He entered the room and placed the milk on the bedside table. "It's warm; drink it before you sleep."
Anna had just laid down in bed, and upon hearing this, her body stiffened slightly.
The milk he was holding... Was it for her?
One second he was teasing her playfully and mocking her, the next second, he was caring for her?
"Thank you." Even if she couldn't see through him, Anna still finished the milk. She lied on the inside and closed her eyes to sleep.
In the middle, a long bolster pillow still lay.
Giorgio's gaze darkened slightly as he turned off the main light and got into bed.
Despite the bed being quite wide, it felt cramped and narrow as soon as he lay down.
The air was still and the room became very quiet.
Anna had slept at the hospital during the day and now felt no sleepiness at all. She could sense that Giorgio beside her wasn't asleep either, making her hands tense unnaturally.
How awkward. Why did she have to sleep here?
"Can't sleep?" Giorgio, sensing her restlessness, asked naturally.
Anna hummed softly, "You didn't sleep during the day, so why can't you sleep either?"
Logically, he should be tired after being busy these past few days. She hoped he would fall asleep soon so she wouldn't feel so awkward.
Instead of answering her question, Giorgio, lifting his lips, suggested, "Since we can't sleep, why don't we do something meaningful?"
His voice was naturally magnetic and charming, the kind that could easily captivate someone.
In the deep quiet of the night, it sounded even more husky and enticing.
Anna's palms clenched. Something meaningful? In the middle of the night, a man and a woman together... What meaningful thing could they possibly do?
She didn't dare to think about it and didn't want any involvement with him, so she said, "No need; I feel the sleepiness coming back. I'll be asleep soon. You should sleep too. If you can't, try counting sheep. Goodnight."
After speaking, she closed her eyes again and pulled the blanket tight.
A clear brush-off, a rejection.
Giorgio's brows furrowed in the dark, "Are you deliberately distancing yourself from me?"
Uh...
Yes.
Shouldn't their relationship be distant?
But Anna knew that the more you distance yourself from a man, the more he wanted to win you over – men were creatures with a strong desire for victory. If she answered yes, he might explode the next second, turn over, and engage her in a fierce battle.
She replied as naturally as possible, "No, I just don't feel well; I’m a bit tired and feel a bit sleepy. During a period, it's easy to feel weak and drowsy. You can look it up if you don't believe me."
Giorgio chuckled lightly, as if mocking her lie.
After a while, he said, "I was planning to watch a movie with you, but since you're feeling sleepy, let's sleep."
A movie?
Was the meaningful thing he mentioned watching a movie?
Anna loved watching movies, but unfortunately, she had already made up an excuse and couldn't take it back. She squeezed out the words with a mix of pity and regret, "Alright, goodnight."
She didn't see the depth in the man's eyes darken in the shadows.
Anyone who knew him would be surprised. Mr. Vittorio, who treasured every second of his time, was actually suggesting watching a movie?
The night was long.
The next morning, warm sunlight spread across the earth, the dew of the night was glistening in the light, the grass was thriving, and the air was exceptionally fresh.
Today was a good day.
But for Anna, it definitely was not.
"We need to make a trip to the Vittorio mansion," said the distinguished man sitting on the sofa reading the newspaper as soon as she awoke, issuing her a command.
His tone left no room for refusal.
Anna's fear of the Vittorio mansion was akin to that of a hornet's nest!
Even the seemingly innocent and harmless Abel was so scheming and manipulative. She really didn't want to go.
"Ouch," she exaggerated a cry of pain and sprawled herself on the bed, "I have a stomachache; it's not convenient to go out. Can we not go out today?"
Giorgio saw right through her thoughts; his handsome eyes locking on her faintly, "Today is Katherine's birthday. Grandmother knows you've come home and has specially prepared a birthday banquet."
This was Katherine's first birthday as Mrs. Vittorio, and as a family member, it was necessary to make an appearance.
Understanding this, Anna knew she had no choice but to get up, but she didn’t forget to complain, "Rizzo always says Katherine will wake up in a day or two, but it's been countless days; why hasn't she woken up yet? No, I must make a call later and complain about his medical skills."
Giorgio was speechless.
Not only did she not want to be Mrs. Vittorio, but she also couldn't wait to leave.
Such behavior from her was very irritating to him.
"You don't have to go if you don't want to." After saying this, he stood up and strode out.
Anna was baffled. She just made a small complaint, so why did he seem angry? She hadn't done anything wrong, had she?
Well, the minds of important people were like the weather, inscrutable and changeable on a whim.
Half an hour later, Anna, dressed in Katherine's clothes, adorned in beautifully done makeup, and arm in arm with Katherine's husband, appeared at the Vittorio mansion.
This might be the last 'pretense,' and she was fully prepared to play the part.
But what she never expected was...
