Chapter 44 Evil Woman

As he walked, suddenly there was a collision with a figure. Charlie looked up and saw a sharp and sarcastic face belonging to Wendy.

"You, little kid, can't you walk properly? Don't you have eyes to see where you're going?" Giorgio scolded and pointed, his voice loud, causing Charlie to shrink back, not knowing how to react.

Meanwhile, Anna was buying Charlie a dolphin lollipop when she heard the commotion. She turned around and saw an angry Wendy pointing and scolding the child. There were several people gathered around, which frightened Charlie and made his face turn pale.

She quickly ran over, took his little hand, and stood in front of him, blocking the way. "Ms. Green, he's just a child. You scared him," she said.

Since Anna had sold herself to her, she had decided not to call her mother anymore.

When Wendy saw Anna, her anger only grew further, especially when she heard her being addressed as ‘Ms. Green.’ She angrily crossed her arms and said, "Anna, you've been avoiding me for so long and now you don't even call me 'mom' when we meet! Where have you been all this time? Who is this child? What's going on with Mr. Jack? How could you send him to jail? Are you such a wicked woman?"

A series of accusations were thrown at Anna, making her feel like a thief being accused by a thief! Not wanting to make a scene in public, she responded, "You know what you've done. I have other things to attend to and I don't want to talk to you."

"Hah, I've raised you for twenty years, and you think simply refusing to talk is enough? Today, you must explain everything to me! Otherwise, you're not allowed to leave!" Wendy exclaimed, attracting attention by shouting, "Come and see everyone, this daughter of mine has grown up and become disobedient. She doesn't even recognize her own mother, she's become a heartless wolf."

With these words, more and more people gathered around, pointing fingers and whispering about Anna.

Anna... Her worldview was being completely shattered. She tightly clenched her hands, as the last remaining warmth of family and motherly love in her heart faded away.

Without a trace, she raised her gaze, and her dark eyes turned unusually cool.

"Do you want me to explain it clearly? Alright, let everyone know that you sold your daughter, drugged her, and then go find the police to argue about it, let's see if they'll give you a few years in prison."

As soon as these words were spoken, the gazes of the people around them changed, all directed towards Wendy, "You sold your daughter?"

"Is it still possible to sell women these days?"

Wendy nervously shrunk her neck and then spoke with righteous indignation: "Don't listen to her! I was just trying to help her get married! She's already twenty-five years old, with no skills or achievements, if I don't find her a husband, how is she going to spend the rest of her life?"

"Hmph." Anna sneered coldly and asked in return:

"Married to a man in his forties or fifties, who has already had two wives die under suspicious circumstances? Or using abnormal methods to deceive me and drug me? If this is your idea of helping, then isn't your malicious intent just to kill me? What you call helping me is just because Mr. Jack paid you tens of thousands of dollars, right?"

Wendy slapped her across the face. She hit her so hard, and out of nowhere, it knocked the breath out of her. The crowd grew silent.

Charlie hit Wendy’s knee with his little fist, “Evil old woman!” He shouted. “Help us!”

And then security arrived, and escorted Wendy away. Along with Wendy, went all of Anna’s feelings that she had had toward her ‘mother.’

Her heart sank like a lead weight in her chest. She watched with a mix of helplessness and anguish as her adoptive mother, was escorted away by stern-faced security personnel. The scene unfolded before her, searing into her memory, as her mind embarked on a journey of reflection and unresolved pain.

Every step Wendy took, every ounce of defiance etched on her face, triggered a flood of memories from Anna's tumultuous childhood. It was a past marred by Wendy's mistreatment, her hurtful words and actions leaving indelible scars on Anna's tender soul.

Anna's thoughts wove through the tapestry of time, delving into moments when Wendy had unleashed her anger and frustration upon her. The memories resurfaced like a tidal wave, each recollection highlighting the deep wounds that Anna had carried throughout her life.

How many nights had she lain awake, tears streaming down her face, longing for the comfort and love that should have been her birthright? How many times had she yearned for a mother's warmth, only to be met with indifference or cruelty?

As Wendy disappeared from view, Anna's heart ached with a complex blend of emotions. The pain of Wendy's mistreatment remained, but now intertwined with a profound sense of loss. In that moment, Anna realized that despite everything, despite the scars and the unresolved conflicts, Wendy had still played a pivotal role in her life. She had shaped Anna's resilience and strength, albeit in the harshest of ways.

As the weight of her past pressed upon her, Anna made a silent promise to herself. She vowed to break the cycle of pain. She looked at her son, her dear Charlie, and hugged him.

Anna closed her eyes and thought of Penny. She dreamt of a future where she could be the mother Penny and Charlie deserved. It would never happen, of course. It never could. But Anna dreamt of it, a house with a family. A man who would love her and her children. They would call him Dad and she would call him ‘honey.’ Strangely, the man in Anna’s daydream, looked too much like an arrogant Italian mafia boss she was too familiar with.
