Chapter 269 Nearly Sold Her Daughter

He was Giorgio’s father, Matteo.
From her previous time at the Vittorio mansion, she didn’t have a particularly bad impression of Matteo, and he was good to Giorgio too.
Fortunately, it wasn't Abel or Giuseppe.
She lowered her voice, "I'm sorry for disturbing you so late at night. The main reason is that my friend allowed my daughter to go with Charlie without my consent. I was really worried when I found out, so I rushed over."
She was obedient and timid. She perfectly portrayed the state of being a stranger coming to the imposing Vittorio mansion.
Matteo stopped his scrutinizing gaze and steadied his voice, "It's okay, let's go; I'll take you to Charlie's room."
"Okay, thank you."
Anna breathed a small sigh of relief, obediently following behind Matteo, trying to make herself less noticeable.
Unexpectedly, just as they reached the corridor, Matteo in front of her asked, "Is your daughter two years old? Is she in the same class as Charlie?"
Uh?
She forgot that Penny's ID said she was two years old and should be in the toddler class. But she registered her for the preschool class based on her actual age.
Anna tried to calm herself and found an excuse to answer, "Well, Penny is only two years old, but she's been obedient and independent ever since she started talking. I thought the children in the toddler class were too young, so I put her in the preschool class."
"I see. I met her today; she's very well-behaved and sensible, and she gets along well with Charlie. They look like twins."
Twins?!!
Anna's heart jumped into her throat, "Really? Most kids look similar. Once, I almost picked up the wrong daughter at the hospital. Charlie and Penny both have delicate features, that might be why you had that impression. By the way, this is Charlie's house, right? It's huge."
She was trying to change the subject.
Matteo suddenly stopped, turned around, and looked at Anna.
The light from the corridor lamp shone on his face, making him look serious and cold as he asked, "How did you know Charlie lives here? If I remember correctly, the address Charlie's father left with the school is somewhere else. Also, do you not know what this place is?"
His questions came one after another, creating an oppressive atmosphere.
Anna's palms tightened.
She had indeed forgotten that Charlie's identity was being kept a secret.
It was impossible for her to know that he lived here.
All these questions; did Matteo suspect something?
What could she do?
How could she explain?
Since she remained silent, Matteo's expression became even more serious. He asked, "Did you intentionally investigate Charlie? Did you tell your child to get close to Charlie? What do you want?"
This sudden turn of events was almost laughable to Anna.
Just like Giorgio, his father was also narcissistic.
But this was good, at least she didn't have to find an excuse.
She lowered her head, accepting the truth. "Sir, I have no ill intentions; I just want my daughter to have a good friend."
"Ha, a friend? I think you're clearly taking advantage!" His mocking voice filled the corridor, like a cliché villain from a melodramatic TV show; he could barely hide his disdain.
"Come with me to the study." His commanding voice roared.
Anna frowned, and her palms clenched tightly.
He wanted her to go to the study? What was he going to do?
If she had known it would be like this, she might as well have pretended to be Katherine.
Unfortunately, there was no such thing as a regret pill in this world, so she had no choice but to follow him to the study.
The study was large and expensive mahogany covered the entire room, exuding a sense of stability and luxury.
Anna glanced at Matteo's stern posture, thinking he was about to lose his temper, but instead, he said, "I don't care if it's money you want or whatever, as long as you can keep your daughter and Charlie in touch and keep Charlie happy, we, the Vittorio family, will meet your conditions. Here's a million dollars. Take it and don't reveal Charlie's identity."
Wha... What??
He called her into the study in such a serious manner just to give her money?
What the hell?!
Anna was dumbfounded. "Sir, you misunderstand. I want Penny and Charlie to be friends, not for money; I..."
"So, it's for marriage? Charlie is only three years old, and your daughter is only two; how could you have such an idea?"
Cough, cough.
What was he thinking?
Anna wanted to explain, but Matteo said, "Our Charlie rarely makes friends, and he has never been so happy playing with anyone before. Take this money and let your little girl spend more time with Charlie on weekends. As for the marriage thing, that can only be decided when they grow up. We adults can't control that."
Anna was speechless.
Why did she feel like she was in a situation where she couldn't clear her name, no matter what she did?
"What? Are you not trying to get them to like each other either?" Seeing her not taking a stand, Matteo counter-questioned.
Anna was so scared that she immediately shook her head, "No, no."
Well, she’d just use this excuse for now and take this money, lest if they keep talking, who could guess where Matteo would lead the conversation, he might even suggest that she wanted to marry into the Vittorio family herself.
She stepped forward and took the check with both hands, "Thank you, Sir."
Only then did Matteo stop scrutinizing her, but there was a clear disgust in his eyes.
He had seen too many women who would climb up the ladder at any opportunity.
But Charlie was so happy and natural in front of Penny; he’d laugh and talk like never before. Spending a million dollars to buy a 'toy' to accompany his grandson was not a big deal.
Furthermore, that little girl Penny was really adorable and pleasing.
He spoke, his voice cold and indifferent, "You go home tonight. Tomorrow morning, we will arrange for a car to take the two children to kindergarten."
Uh...
She came to pick up Penny.
Anna wanted to refuse, but Matteo's serious posture made it hard to say no.
Reluctantly, she nodded, "Then please take care of Penny, Sir, thank you."
After returning to the apartment, Anna looked worried.
Not only had she not picked up Penny, but she had somehow managed to bind Penny and Charlie's futures even tighter together. She felt a serious headache coming on.
Seeing her in such a state, and without Penny behind her, Sara approached with concern, "What happened? Didn't they let you into the Vittorio Mansion to pick up Penny?"
"It's complicated," she sighed.
The people of the Vittorio family were all astute; if they weren't careful, they would discover that Penny and Charlie were twins.
Moreover, if Katherine saw Charlie playing so well with a little girl, she would definitely suspect that little girl.
Seeing Anna's distress, Sara moved next to her, cuddling up to her in an attempt to comfort her, "I'm sorry; I didn't think it through. I promise I won't make decisions about Penny on my own again. Don't worry too much; it's not good for your health. How about this, I'll take care of your clothes for the next month." She tried to appease her and apologize.
Anna wasn't angry with Sara. After all, she knew that Sara wanted the two little ones to spend more time together.
In the end, blood was thicker than water, and there was a magnetic attraction between them. Otherwise, the two little ones wouldn't like each other so much.
She decided to let it go.
She would figure out something tomorrow.
"It's okay, let's sleep."
"And you're not allowed to worry anymore. I swear, if anything happens, even if I have to fight, I'll get your daughter back for you."
"Silly, with your strength, you're going to fight for my daughter? More like you'd be the one getting kidnapped."
"Hmph, you underestimate me. I'll show you how strong I am!"
The two began to play on the bed.
The night was gradually replaced by laughter...
The next morning.
It was another sunny day.
Anna, worried about Penny, woke up very early to wait at the school gate.
She didn't notice a limited-edition luxury car parked by the roadside.
