Chapter 415 We Are Not Suitable

That was almost a rhetorical question, as if he was asking, "Won't you say something sweet?"

Anna's heart tightened. Every time they met, he was like Pandora's box—irresistible. But she knew the consequences and looked down, biting her lip.

"Mr. Vittorio, I need to talk to you."

"Go ahead," he said.

Giorgio gently tucked her hair behind her ear, his gaze soft. He thought she was going to talk about their relationship, but instead, she said, "I've thought about it. We're not right for each other."

Giorgio's face stiffened, his breath heavy.

Anna felt suffocated, her palms sweaty. Giorgio had been good to her, and she felt a bit heartless. But what he offered wasn't what she wanted. There were too many obstacles, and she wouldn't endure so much pain for a bit of affection.

She took a deep breath and said firmly, "Mr. Vittorio, since you asked, I've been thinking about my feelings for you. Today, I've made up my mind. I'll hand over the Greenwood project to Mr. Giuseppe and leave the Vittorio and Stefanelli families in a month. I'll return to a peaceful life with Penny. Thinking about it makes me happy. But here, I feel trapped, like a caged bird."

She continued, "This isn't the life I want. I asked myself if I could stay for you, endure it, or even take one step towards you. The answer is no. Just the thought of facing everyone's criticism and Katherine's anger scares me. My feelings for you aren't deep; they might not even exist. You're not worth the sacrifice."

Each word was clear and strong. Giorgio's eyebrows furrowed. Not deep? Not worth it? He knew she was rational and smart, but hearing those words from her irritated him.

"I haven't asked you to endure anything. What one step are you talking ," he said, his voice patient and tender. Even with his high status, he seemed humble at this moment. Such a side of him upset her, making her worry that she would fall into his trap again.

He could easily clean up the mess and walk away, but she couldn't gamble like that.

Anna raised her voice, "Don't you get it? I can't even take one step. I don't want to make any sacrifice for you. If it were Antonio, maybe I would, but not for you."

She continued, "You don't need to take 99 steps for me. An unbalanced relationship won't last. Mr. Vittorio, let's not have any contact in the future. I wish you a happy marriage or find a girl willing to walk 100 steps with you."

Decisive, cold, rational, calm. No word could fully describe her state. Giorgio's face darkened. He could accept her retreat, but her calm attitude displeased him. For the first time, he was at a loss for words. He looked at her coldly, then turned and walked away. The air around him was freezing, like it could freeze a person to death.

Anna stood still, her face dim and desolate. Earlier today, she had been waiting to clear things up with him. Now that it was done, she felt no relief, just a heavy sense of emptiness. She wondered if things would be different if she were eighteen again, with the courage to face joy and pain.

Giorgio returned to Emerald Manor, his face cold. Tony hurried over. "Mr. Vittorio, I have the gift ready. Would you like to see it?"

Yesterday, Giorgio had prepared for the Greenwood Project. Even if Anna couldn't come up with a brilliant plan, he had a way to help her succeed and end the contract with Giuseppe. He had had Tony prepare a gift to celebrate her freedom. Now, looking at the gift box, he said, "Throw it away."

'Throw it away? This was a precious gift brought back from overseas overnight,' Tony thought.

He wanted to say it was a waste, but Giorgio's cold attitude indicated something had happened.

He asked carefully, "What's wrong? Miss Stefanelli got the Project, can end the contract with Mr. Giuseppe, and regain her single status. Plus, your grandma knows about your conversation with your wife, and her impression of Madame has changed. All of this is good news. Aren't you happy?"

Giorgio sneered. No matter how good the conditions were, they couldn't compare to Anna's words: not worth it. For the first time, he realized there were things he wasn't worth a woman's effort for. It was ridiculous.

Glancing at Tony's puzzled face, he coldly said, "Don't ask what you shouldn't. Get out. Go to the company."

In the underground garage, Giorgio heard voices from the floor below. "You're saying this abortion record is fake?" Giuseppe's voice was angry.

Elena hadn't expected to be discovered and quickly explained, "Yes, it's fake. Mr. Giuseppe, calm down. That day, when you locked Miss Stefanelli in the room and didn't allow her to contact Mr. Vittorio, I came up with an idea. I told her Mr. Vittorio wasn't sincere. She didn't believe me, so I asked her to test him. If he was willing to keep the child, I would let her go. If not, she would stay to take care of you. I bribed the doctor to say Miss Stefanelli had a blood clotting disorder and couldn't conceive, so Mr. Vittorio had to ask her to abort the child. Anna lost the bet and stayed. This medical record was made by her request; she wasn't really pregnant."

Giuseppe suddenly understood. No wonder Anna willingly stayed by his side. As long as she was disappointed in Giorgio, he might still have a chance. "Well done. Keep an eye on them and tell me if there's any news."

"Yes, Mr. Giuseppe."

Suddenly, footsteps approached. They turned to see Giorgio emerging from the corner, his tall figure and powerful aura like a god descending from the heavens, holding the power of life and death. A single glance made people shudder.

Giuseppe frowned. "Uncle Giorgio?"

Elena was even more nervous. In Mr. Vittorio's way of handling things, he would never forgive her for the things she had done. Those who plotted against him either ended up dead or wishing they were dead.

With unrealistic hope, she wondered if he would forgive her if she kneeled right now, as she asked in a trembling voice, "Mr. Vittorio, when did you come?"
