Chapter 477 The Truth About the Pregnancy
"It's not like that, Mr. Vittorio," the doc stood up and broke it down, "It's not a screw-up or a misdiagnosis. It's this medical thing called pseudocyesis."
The doc went on, "Basically, her body, blood, and all the symptoms scream pregnancy, making it almost impossible to tell the real deal from the fake."
"And the odds of pseudocyesis are one in ten million. I didn't see it coming with that lady, so I didn't think much of it at first. But last night, you called me up, and I rechecked the samples from yesterday, running a bunch of tests to figure this out."
He laid it all out, clear as day.
The doc's sincere and sorry look showed he wasn't just finding an excuse. Giuseppe adjusted his glasses, ignored him, got up, and walked out.
Out of nowhere, Katherine showed up and teased, "Mr. Vittorio, you still got the guts to be here? You know Anna's already picked a second match?"
Giuseppe gave her a cold stare. He used to think she was all classy and noble, even if she was just someone he used. He had genuinely taken a fancy on her. But ever since Anna showed up, he saw how fake and gross Katherine really was.
"Honestly, it's a good call. I should go grab some fruit for Elodie now."
"You!" Katherine didn't expect him to brush her off like that. She chased after him and hopped into his car. "Giuseppe, this is your shot to get Anna away from Giorgio. You can use her 'pregnancy' to make Anna leave on her own."
She added, "Once she's away from Giorgio, you've got endless chances. Miss this, and you're done for!"
Despite her convincing words, Giuseppe's cool face didn't change. Just then, he seemed to catch something in her eyes and looked at her sideways. "Did you fake the pregnancy?" he asked.
"No, just a coincidence," Katherine shot back, "Is that the point now? You really think your knight-in-shining-armor act will win her over?"
Katherine kept pushing, "Give it up. Look what happened to Simon after he gave up. You think you'll do better than him?"
That hit Giuseppe hard. He knew about Simon and Anna's history. No matter their relationship, Simon's family, skills, and status were top-notch. But in the end, he still couldn't win Anna's heart!
Seeing him waver, Katherine pressed on, "If you want something, you gotta fight for it. Giving up means losing everything. Think it over! Elodie's chance is a one-time deal."
With that, Katherine opened the car door and left.
The vibe went dead silent. Giuseppe sat in the car, his face blurred, his expression unreadable.
Meanwhile, at the hospital, Anna had already talked with the doc and set the surgery for early tomorrow morning. Even though the odds were just fifty-five percent, she wanted to try, with Giorgio backing her up.
"Grandma, you gotta hang in there. If you do, you can wake up and see me again. And there's my daughter Penny. Don't you wanna see her? She's as cute and charming as I was when I was little."
Anna held her grandma's hand, hoping she'd wake up and talk to her. But Elodie lay there, peaceful, not moving an inch. It was like she was just sleeping.
Giorgio's big hand gently rested on Anna's shoulder, silently comforting her, but his eyes were dark.
Penny, her daughter? She said it so naturally.
For some reason, Giorgio's mind flashed back to what Tom had said before. The kids looked like boy-girl twins. Something felt off, but he couldn't put his finger on it.
"Mr. Vittorio, you should head back. I wanna stay with Grandma tonight," Anna's voice broke the silence.
Giorgio looked at her delicate, pale face. He wanted to stay, but knowing she needed some peace, he softly said, "Alright, take care of yourself."
Then he turned to the nearby doc, "Get her a comfy bed to stay with the patient, and hit me up if anything goes down."
"Yes, Mr. Vittorio."
He only left after making sure everything was set, keeping his usual cool and collected vibe.
Once everyone was gone, Anna whispered to her grandma, "Grandma, that was Penny's dad, my boyfriend. You gotta hang in there tomorrow and wake up to keep an eye on him for me."
She added, "Oh, and Grandma, I forgot to tell you, I had boy-girl twins, super cute, and the little boy's a total prodigy."
Even though Elodie didn't respond, Anna kept talking to her all night, spilling everything she hadn't said in years. Eventually, she fell asleep holding her grandma's hand.
Late at night, a nurse quietly pushed the door open and came in. She glanced at the sleeping Anna, covered her with a thin blanket, then checked on Elodie, injected some meds into the IV, and left with the medical cart. Less than half an hour later, the medical instruments started blaring.
Anna jolted awake, seeing her grandma gasping for breath, her face pale, and the heart monitor going wild! She panicked and yelled, "Grandma! Doctor, doctor..."
The doc rushed in and asked, "What's going on?"
"I don't know, my grandma suddenly can't breathe well, and her heart rate's going nuts. Please, check on her!"
"Got it!" The doc was already at the bedside, checking on Elodie. "Quick, get the emergency respirator! Prep for resuscitation!"
A bunch of doctors rushed in, all business.
Anna was pushed to the corner. Watching the docs work frantically to save Elodie, she was both anxious and terrified.
"Worried?" A cold laugh cut through the tension. Anna turned and saw Katherine at the door, looking at her with a smug, disdainful expression.
Katherine sneered, "For the sake of love, you'd rather let your grandma die. You're not even qualified to worry about her."
Anna was stunned, gritting her teeth to explain, "I haven't given up on Grandma, and with my blood, there was a sixty percent chance to succeed, I believe she can pull through."
Hearing that, Katherine dragged Anna to a quiet spot by the door, looking inside and said, "You really think there's such a high chance? Given her age, she's been out cold for four years, she's practically a goner."
She added, "You saw her condition just now; she can't hold on. Yet you still let her suffer through surgery."
Anna bit her lip, clenching her fists. She didn't want to admit it, she didn't want to torture her grandma, she just believed in Giorgio!
"Anna," Katherine suddenly called her name, stepping closer and whispering in her ear, "You're pregnant. Giorgio can't accept you, the Vittorio family can't accept you, and Giuseppe won't let you go either. All Giuseppe has to do is say you're pregnant, and your world will flip upside down."
Anna's frail body trembled! She hadn't expected Katherine to know that too.
"What do you want?" she asked, clueless about Katherine's game.
Katherine sneered, "My dear sister, you're overthinking. I just want to tell you that now you're pregnant, there's no way you'll be with Giorgio. You're risking your grandma's life for a love that's up in the air, you know?"
She added, "In the future, don't blame me for not helping. I have a flight at four in the morning, goodbye."
With that, she stormed out, all high and mighty.
Anna stood there, like she'd been struck by lightning. She realized she'd missed something, something super important.
