Chapter 485 Discovering the Pseudopregnancy
Tears, sorrow, pain—none of that even came close to what Anna was feeling.
If Anna let herself cry, she’d probably bawl until she passed out. But she didn’t. She forced a smile, put down the flowers, and left the grave. She didn’t want Elodie to see her all broken.
Afterwards, Anna headed down the hill and asked Simon to take her to see Penny. Simon hesitated, "You’re not in a good place right now, maybe later?"
"It’s fine," Anna said. "I need to get back to Crownhaven. I’ll just take a quick look at Penny and then bounce."
"Back to Crownhaven?" Simon was pretty shocked.
Anna nodded firmly. "I know you don’t believe me, Simon. You were just trying to comfort me, saying you’d help. But Grandma wouldn’t lie to me. The first thing she said was that Katherine pushed her. I heard it with my own ears. It’s definitely not that simple."
She added, "I need to go back. Only by finding out the truth can I truly put Grandma at ease."
At that moment, Sara chimed in, "To be honest, right after your grandma’s surgery, the medical team was set to go to Vista Heights. I thought it was quite a coincidence. Then there was this car accident. I can’t help but think something’s off. Anna, I’ll go with you!"
Hearing their words, Simon’s eyes deepened. After a moment, he said, "I’ll arrange a plane for you, but before you go, let’s do a quick investigation."
Anna nodded. "Thanks, Mr. Dalio."
No matter how much time passed, no matter when, she still treated him with such formality. Simon’s eyes darkened slightly, and he said faintly, "It’s nothing."
Soon, the investigation results came out.
"The perpetrator was a heavy drinker. That day, he drank and drove, leading to the accident. On the surface, it was a simple drunk driving incident." Simon continued, "But I also found out that a week before, the perpetrator had an unexpected lottery win of $78,740, which he used to send his kids abroad for school. This money seems a bit fishy."
"Indeed suspicious. If he won that much money, he shouldn’t be driving to make money," Sara deduced. "I think it’s more like someone gave him the money to buy his life."
Anna suddenly realized as she said, "A week ago was exactly when Katherine came to tell me about Grandma’s condition. She knew I would choose Grandma and was afraid Grandma would recover and spill the beans, so she immediately arranged for the medical team to come to Vista Heights and planned this car accident."
"Yes! That’s definitely it! Katherine could harm a little kitten; she could definitely do something so heinous!" Sara echoed, gritting her teeth, convinced this was the truth.
Anna’s eyes were dark and confused. Could it really be like this? Was Katherine’s heart truly so malicious, wanting to kill her? If it was true, she wouldn’t let her get away with it!
That night, Anna saw Penny lying in the ICU. Poor Penny was covered in bandages and hooked up to all sorts of machines. Even her breathing was so weak.
"Penny," Anna said through the glass, her heart breaking.
Nothing was more painful than losing Elodie and seeing Penny gravely ill in one day. But she couldn’t collapse. There were more important things waiting for her to do!
"Penny, you have to be strong. As long as you wake up safely, Mommy will make sure you and Charlie are always together."
After saying this, Anna and Sara hopped on a plane that night. They landed in Crownhaven at four in the morning.
Anna said as soon as she got off the plane, "Sara, come with me to the hospital."
"Huh? Are you feeling sick? Why didn’t you say something earlier?" Sara was confused.
"No," Anna paused, then gathered her courage, saying, "I want to terminate the pregnancy and take these two days to rest in the hospital."
She was still in a wheelchair. She hadn’t mentioned the baby in Vista Heights because she didn’t want Simon to know about her troubles.
Sara was stunned. "Terminate the pregnancy? Are you sure?"
Anna clenched her fists, determined, saying, "If the culprit is really Katherine, she’s got a strong background, a powerful family, and lots of influential connections. We can’t fight her. And to investigate the truth, we need to get close to Katherine. Being pregnant is inconvenient."
She couldn’t quite understand what Katherine meant. But honestly, Sara never liked that child belonging to Giuseppe from the start!
She said nothing more, pushing Anna to the hospital.
"An abortion?" The doctor performed an ultrasound on Anna.
Anna nodded. Maybe at this moment, she was heartless, cold, and selfish. But for Elodie and Penny, she had no choice. Otherwise, the child’s existence would give Katherine a clear vulnerability to exploit.
"But where is the child? You’re not even pregnant," the doctor said.
Anna was stunned, frowning. "Not pregnant? A few days ago, the doctor confirmed I was pregnant."
The doctor said, "Show me your pregnancy test results."
Anna didn’t have them and said, "I left them at home. Doctor, please check again. My friend was with me during the diagnosis."
"Yes, it’s true! A well-known doctor personally told us. We asked several times," Sara nodded.
The doctor looked at them, not seeming like they were lying, and checked again. But no matter how much he looked, there was no sign of pregnancy. "Miss, you should go back to the previous hospital and ask the doctor again. You’re indeed not pregnant. If you don’t believe it, you can use a test strip for a quick check."
Anna took the test strip from the doctor, curiously and doubtfully wheeling herself to the restroom. With Sara’s help, the test result came out: she really wasn’t pregnant!
"What’s going on? How could it be?" Sara was shocked.
Anna also found it strange, speculating, "Could it be that the car accident in Vista Heights caused it?"
"No. I was in a safe spot with the airbag deployed, no major injuries. I woke up and stayed by your side. The doctor never mentioned pregnancy or a child." Sara recalled.
That’s odd. What was going on with the child?
To find out the truth, Anna had Sara push her to the previous hospital.
Late at night, the doctor wasn’t there. They found the on-duty doctor and investigated her medical records. It said "Pseudocyesis."
"Pseudocyesis? What’s that?" they asked.
The doctor explained, "Pseudocyesis is a medical phenomenon that occurs in one in ten million people. It means the body shows all the signs of pregnancy, but it goes away after a few days."
So that’s it! It meant she was never pregnant from the start! And the doctor, knowing the truth, didn’t tell her!!!
Anna, though being excited and thrilled, realized the doctor wouldn’t withhold such information for no reason.
