Chapter 111 The Purpose of the Visit

Grandma Robinson had always been in poor health. Quentin knew he shouldn't trouble her with this matter, but he was at his wit's end, with nowhere else to turn.
Seeing Grandma Robinson so angry pained Quentin deeply, but he didn't want to lose Lauren, so he continued to persuade her.
Grandma Robinson wanted to test Quentin's sincerity for Lauren. Although Quentin was her grandson, she didn't want to see him upset.
But Quentin had been such a scoundrel for the past two years, it was Lauren who had suffered, and this time, Quentin needed to taste some of that suffering.
Grandma Robinson turned to leave the study and returned to her room. Quentin paced back and forth outside her door.
Grandma, I beg you to give me a chance. If you don't come out, I'll wait here until you do, Quentin begged.
Grandma Robinson replied calmly, "If you want to wait, then wait! I won't change my mind."
The next afternoon, a special visitor arrived at Lauren's hospital room.
"Grandma Robinson, what brings you here?" Lauren was very surprised. 'Does Grandma Robinson know everything that happened between Quentin and me?' she wondered.
Grandma Robinson smiled kindly as usual. "Lauren, it's been a long time since we last met. I didn't expect to see you here in a hospital. If Quentin hadn't come to me last night, I might still be in the dark."
"Grandma, I'm sorry, I..." Lauren never wanted to make Grandma Robinson sad. She had always hesitated to tell her about the divorce, but in the end, she lacked the courage.
"Lauren, you don't need to feel guilty. You and Quentin can handle your own affairs. Whether you and Quentin are still married or not, we are family. I've always considered you my granddaughter," Grandma Robinson said warmly.
Grandma Robinson held Lauren's hand tightly; Lauren's situation pained her deeply.
If she could truly influence hearts, she would have made Quentin fall in love with Lauren from the start, sparing Lauren all this suffering.
"Grandma, thank you. Even though Quentin and I are divorced, I will still respect and care for you. Besides, you are the great-grandmother of my child. We are still family!" Lauren said.
Grandma Robinson nodded thoughtfully. "Child, you've been through so much. You may not yet understand the hardships of raising a child alone. I can't bear to see you suffer. So, have you truly decided to sever ties with Quentin completely? Or are you open to another relationship?"
"Grandma, honestly, I haven't thought that far ahead. I know I can't return to the Robinson family, so..." Lauren lowered her head. She didn't want to disappoint Grandma Robinson, but she couldn't go back to her old life.
Grandma Robinson sighed deeply. It seemed that even if Quentin had come to his senses, it might be too late.
But she still decided to speak her mind and give Quentin one last chance.
"Lauren, I heard from Quentin that you two got a divorce because of some misunderstandings. However, I also believe Quentin fails to fulfill his responsibilities as a husband. I don't want to listen to his explanations. But when he stood outside my door all night, I realized for the first time how determined he was for your sake. So, I give him a chance to explain." Grandma Robinson looked intently at Lauren, hoping to find the expression she sought.
But in the end, Grandma Robinson was disappointed, for Lauren's face remained calm and indifferent.
"Grandma, please don't say any more. It's not just misunderstandings between us. There are too many issues we can't resolve. Since we've already separated, let's leave it at that. I don't want him to reconcile with me because of the pressure you put on him or out of a sense of duty to the child," Lauren said.
Lauren wanted to quickly end the conversation. Despite realizing she hadn't fully let go of her feelings for Quentin, she couldn't allow herself to fall into that trap again.
Grandma Robinson felt anxious, not expecting Lauren to be so stubborn.
"Lauren, you've misunderstood. I haven't put any pressure on Quentin, nor have I used the child as leverage to make him submit. He has realized that he loves you, truly. I can see his sincerity," Grandma Robinson said.
Lauren remained silent, wondering if things were really as Grandma Robinson said.
She could understand Quentin telling Grandma Robinson about their divorce, but to judge his sincerity based on that seemed too hasty.
What made Lauren even more doubtful of the statement was that Quentin had witnessed Ethan confessing his feelings to her yesterday by coincidence. It was said that men's possessiveness was stronger than women's, and perhaps Quentin's sudden change of heart was driven by his possessiveness.
She didn't want to be Quentin's trophy, nor did she want to gamble her life on whether Quentin had truly fallen for her.
"Grandma, if you really care about me, please don't bring this up again. I'm really happy that you came to see me today, and I really appreciate all the care you've given me. So, please relax and don't let these troubling matters affect your mood, okay?" Lauren smiled warmly, making it hard to refuse her request.
"Alright." Grandma Robinson knew that continuing the conversation wouldn't change Lauren's unwavering resolution and might even make her more averse to Quentin, so she wisely changed the subject.
"I've made some soup for you, prepared by George. Drink it while it's hot. The baby is growing every day and needs more nutrition, so you should eat well. It's good for the baby and for your health too." Grandma Robinson's loving reminders were something Lauren always cherished.
As Grandma Robinson was chatting with Lauren, Ethan arrived with some items.
This was Grandma Robinson's first time meeting Ethan. Although she had learned from Quentin last night that Lauren had a suitor, she hadn't expected him to be such an outstanding man.
Ethan was handsome, well-mannered, and, most importantly, he was genuinely good to Lauren.
"Ethan, let me introduce you. This is Grandma Robinson. Grandma Robinson, this is my friend Ethan," Lauren took the initiative to introduce them.
Grandma Robinson, who had raised such an excellent grandson as Quentin, was naturally not an ordinary person. She could tell at a glance that Ethan was no ordinary man. She narrowed her eyes slightly, sizing Ethan up.
Hello, Ethan, Grandma Robinson greeted graciously.
Ethan had already guessed the identity of the Grandma Robinson Lauren mentioned, so he knew he had to make a good impression.
"Hello, Grandma Robinson. Thank you for coming to visit Lauren." Ethan's words carried multiple meanings, indicating his role as a host and clarifying his relationship with Lauren.
Grandma Robinson smiled slightly; such tactics were insignificant to her. "I must visit Lauren. You must be the Lauren's friend that Quentin mentioned. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Lauren didn't notice anything unusual in their conversation and continued talking to Grandma Robinson about the baby.
Ethan stood by, thoughtfully watching Lauren. 'Would she change her mind because of Grandma Robinson's visit?' he wondered.
