Chapter 258 The Turbulence of the Memorial Ceremony
Lauren's face was extremely pale. The thought of her and Quentin becoming lifelong enemies made her want to escape.
Her lips were turning blue as she forced herself to speak, "Mom, I've made up my mind. You don't need to say anything. Don't worry. Quentin won't take Matthew away. I won't go into Quentin's house. I'll watch Matthew from the door and come back once he's inside."
Kimberly frowned, knowing she couldn't persuade Lauren to change her mind. However, she couldn't help but worry. To her, Quentin was more terrifying than the devil himself. How could she feel at ease sending Matthew there?
Kimberly said, "Lauren, let Ethan take you there. Then you can pay your respects to Mrs. Jessica Robinson and come back. Quentin won't do anything to you in front of so many people." This way, Ethan could also protect Lauren and Matthew.
Mentioning Ethan made Lauren pause. Matthew's fall down the elevator was like a thorn in her heart that hadn't been removed.
Recently, Lauren's feelings for Ethan seemed to have cooled considerably. She even felt a bit hesitant to deal with him.
"Forget it. It has nothing to do with Ethan," Lauren said flatly.
Kimberly asked, "How can it have nothing to do with him? Aren't you going to marry him?"
"Mom!" Lauren looked at Kimberly excitedly. She had never thought about marrying Ethan. "Don't say such things."
Kimberly sighed and said, "Lauren, are you going to let Ethan down?"
Lauren frowned and pulled Matthew forward. She said, "Mom, I'm really not in a position to think about these things right now. Please don't push me, okay?"
Watching Lauren and Matthew leave, Kimberly sighed repeatedly, thinking, 'How long would I have to wait to see Lauren happy? Why is Lauren always unappreciative of my good intentions?'
In the end, Lauren still brought Matthew to the Robinson Estate.
Luxury cars were parked all around the entrance of the Robinson Estate. Prominent figures from City A had come to pay their respects to Jessica. Others might envy the power and background of the Robinson Conglomerate, but Lauren felt only sadness.
How many of these people were genuinely here to mourn Jessica? How many of them actually knew Jessica? They were here because of their business ties with the Robinson Conglomerate.
However, none of this concerned her. She had no right to care, and she couldn't even enter the door to pay her respects to Jessica.
Lauren took a deep breath and then forced a smile at Matthew. She said, "Matthew, go inside. Remember to listen to your dad."
Matthew looked at Lauren with wide eyes and asked, "Mommy, can't you come in with me?"
Lauren gently shook her head, smiling as she watched Matthew walk into the Robinson Estate. Matthew kept looking back at Lauren. He had never been away from her for so long. Although he was going to see Quentin, he couldn't help but feel a sense of loss.
As Matthew disappeared, Lauren looked at the door in confusion and took a few steps back.
"Jessica, I'm sorry. I can't go to your memorial. Please let me say goodbye to you from here," Lauren murmured, slowly kneeling on the ground.
She felt both guilty and sad, feeling unworthy of being there.
Tears wouldn't stop flowing, and Lauren knelt on the ground for a long time. If this could atone for her sins, she would be willing to kneel there for three days and nights.
Matthew entered the Robinson Estate, surrounded by unknown people. He remembered Lauren's words and headed to the main hall to find Quentin.
Matthew's presence in the memorial hall was particularly conspicuous. Quentin glanced over and saw Matthew looking around.
Quentin was busy greeting guests, so he immediately had George bring Matthew over.
When Matthew was brought to Quentin, he burst into tears.
Matthew said, "Daddy, I finally found you. Mommy is outside. Can you come with me to find Mommy?"
Matthew's crying drew the attention of those present.
Everyone had heard that Quentin had a child. The drama between Quentin and Lauren was well-known, but there had been no news about the child for the past three years. No one dared to mention the child or Lauren in front of Quentin.
Hearing their conversation, everyone looked curiously at Quentin and Matthew.
Sophia stood behind Quentin, waiting to see the drama unfold. She knew Lauren would come today, but she didn't expect Matthew to come without Lauren.
Quentin ignored the curious glances and stood tall in front of Matthew, wiping the tears from his face.
Quentin asked, "Why are you here?"
Quentin's cold voice made Matthew shrink his neck. He wondered why Quentin was so indifferent to him.
"Mommy said I should say goodbye to Mrs. Jessica Robinson and keep you company, so you won't be lonely," Matthew replied in his childish voice, hoping to ease the tension between Quentin and Lauren.
However, before Quentin could respond, Sophia stepped forward.
Sophia advised, "Matthew, Quentin, no matter what Jessica promised Lauren, Matthew is a descendant of the Robinson Family. Since he and Miss Walker are here, let them pay their respects to Jessica. It would fulfill one of Jessica's wishes."
Sophia's seemingly gentle and considerate words were meant to comfort Quentin, but she knew Quentin would never forgive Lauren. Her words subtly undermined Lauren's efforts.
Quentin sneered and said, "George, find someone to get Lauren out of here!"
Sophia was delighted by Quentin's attitude but remained calm on the surface. She pretended to be anxious and continued, "Quentin, Miss Walker means well. Doing this would hurt Matthew. For Jessica's sake, don't make things difficult for her."
"Am I make things difficult for her?" Quentin's eyes widened in anger, his expression terrifying.
Matthew tugged at Quentin's sleeve and said, "Daddy, Mommy hasn't been doing well. She can't eat or sleep. Please don't be mad at her."
Quentin's eyes softened for a moment but quickly hardened again.
Quentin asked, "Hasn't she been doing well? Hearing that, I'm interested in seeing what that heartless Lauren looks like now."
Quentin's face was full of amusement. The onlookers wisely stepped back, sensing Quentin's intense anger.
