Chapter 321 The Belated Deterrence
After Quentin had the dirt on Ruby and Brent's scheme to mess with him and Lauren, he didn't rush to call out Sophia just yet, as he was uncertain about what she had done.
So, he decided to hang back and see if she'd come to him with an explanation.
Meanwhile, Sophia and Ruby found out Quentin had managed to save Lauren and Matthew, but they had no clue about the deal Quentin made with Brent.
After chatting with Ruby, Sophia decided to make the first move. She wanted to find Quentin and feel out his vibe before deciding whether to spill the beans.
That evening, Sophia wearily made her way to Quentin's place.
She put on a good show, looking all delicate and frail, like she was seriously ill.
When Sophia saw Quentin, she flashed a gentle smile, but her eyes were all misty, like she was on the verge of tears.
"Quentin, it's so great you got Matthew and Lauren out safely. Let me check if you're hurt," Sophia said, all worried.
Sophia's acting was top-notch. Right then, she totally nailed the role of a caring wife. If Quentin didn't already know about Ruby and Brent's shady deal, he might've fallen for it again.
Quentin let out a quiet, cold snort, tapping his fingers on the table, "It's late, why'd you come here?"
Sophia walked over and sat next to Quentin, giving him a once-over. After checking, she let out a sigh of relief.
"I was so scared when I heard you went to the mafia. But now I'm relieved to see you're okay," Sophia said happily, clinging to Quentin's arm.
Quentin didn't shake her off right away but looked at her gently, "I'm sorry for making you worry."
Hearing Quentin say this, Sophia finally relaxed. It seemed like Quentin didn't know about Ruby's involvement, so she could keep waiting confidently to marry him.
"What are you talking about? We're family. When I heard about Matthew's accident, I was just as anxious. I supported you going to rescue Matthew right away, even if it meant postponing our engagement ceremony. I just feel useless for not being fully prepared and letting those bad guys get a chance," Sophia knew exactly what to say to make Quentin like her more, so she had these lines ready and delivered them perfectly.
Quentin's gaze grew more intense as he patiently listened to Sophia. He wanted to see what else she had up her sleeve.
Seeing Quentin's seemingly warm gaze, Sophia shyly lowered her head. "Quentin, why are you looking at me like that?"
Quentin replied, "I just suddenly feel like you've changed, becoming more mature and steady."
Sophia blushed even more and smiled, "When did you start joking? Alright, let me tell you something serious. My mom heard that you interrupted the engagement ceremony to save Matthew. She's not mad, but she's been pushing us to find another time to make up for the ceremony. What do you think?"
Quentin pulled his arm away from Sophia's grip and turned to the bookshelf. "Is that all your mom said?"
Sophia didn't catch the edge in Quentin's voice and answered without thinking, "Yeah, she just wants me to get married. Don't blame her for being too eager."
Sophia lied for Ruby, scared that one wrong move would make Quentin call off their engagement. As long as she and Quentin could get engaged, everything else would be easier to handle. This was her top priority.
Quentin grabbed some photos of Ruby and Brent meeting from the bookshelf and walked over to Sophia with a smile, handing them to her.
Sophia took them without a second thought, and her face changed when she saw the photos.
Quentin looked at her, amused, mocking, "Looks like you know the guy meeting with your mom?"
"I..." Sophia wanted to deny it, but she knew Quentin was too smart. Showing these photos meant he was already aware of Ruby's involvement.
"Quentin, please forgive my mom. She did it all for me," Sophia bit her lip.
She was clever, making it look like she was begging for mercy while actually distancing herself from the whole thing. Tears fell at just the right moment, making her look pitiful and beautiful, tugging at the heartstrings.
Quentin looked at the crying Sophia in front of him, feeling super annoyed. "You know I hate people scheming behind my back."
"I know. I just didn't think my mom would be so irrational. She was scared I'd suffer. Quentin, I know you're a kind person. Can you not make things hard for my mom? I'm only asking this once." Sophia cried on purpose, knowing Quentin wouldn't do anything to Ruby. She was just worried their engagement might be at risk.
"If your mom doesn't trust me, we need to rethink our relationship. A marriage without parental blessings won't be happy," Quentin replied sadly, looking at the ceiling, not wanting to say more.
Hearing this, Sophia gritted her teeth. Her gut feeling was right, but she didn't want to give up her hard-earned happiness. "Quentin, please give me another chance. I'll personally apologize to Miss Walker and Matthew. I'll do everything I can to earn their forgiveness."
Looking down at the hysterically crying Sophia on the sofa, Quentin sighed, "Some mistakes can't be fixed with an apology."
"I know. I just want to show them I never meant to hurt them," Sophia explained.
Quentin gave Sophia a cold look but had a plan in mind. Sophia apologizing to Lauren was a good thing. He wanted Sophia and Ruby to know that no matter how strained his relationship with Lauren was, Lauren and Matthew were off-limits.
After Quentin turned around, Sophia pleaded on the surface, "Quentin, please believe me. I'll earn Miss Walker's forgiveness. I hope this won't affect our relationship." Meanwhile, she glared at his back viciously.
"Since you've decided, I won't stop you," Quentin responded coldly.
Sophia stood up, shot Quentin a few glances, and then stormed out. No one saw her anger.
