Chapter 458 The Cost of Misunderstanding

Lauren absentmindedly got into the car.

Quentin glanced up briefly. "Honey, you're back. How'd it go?"

"What did you say?" Lauren was so lost in thoughts about the boy named Elijah that she missed Quentin's question.

Quentin noticed her unusual behavior and raised an eyebrow. "I asked, weren't you with Imogen and her sick kid? How's he doing?"

"He's fine. They said he can go home tomorrow. But Quentin, why are you so interested in that kid?"

Lauren couldn't help but voice her thoughts, her words carrying a hint of curiosity.

She couldn't shake the feeling.

Elijah looked so much like Quentin.

Quentin looked puzzled. "Why would you think I care? I just asked 'cause you seemed concerned."

"Sorry, I got a bit emotional and misspoke."

Lauren watched Quentin's expression closely. Seeing his genuine confusion, she decided to set her doubts aside for now.

No matter what the connection between Quentin and that child might be, she didn't want Elijah to be exposed to Quentin just yet. It was a bit of her selfishness.

"What's up with you? You've been out of it since you left the hospital. Did something happen?"

Quentin's instincts were sharp. He even considered having someone look into what had just happened.

"Nothing, really," Lauren quickly made up an excuse. "Maybe seeing Elijah so young and sick got to me. If it were Matthew in that hospital bed, I wouldn't be able to sleep at all."

Quentin didn't say anything, just stared at her quietly for a few seconds.

Lauren felt a pang of guilt under his gaze, as if all her thoughts were laid bare before him.

Luckily, Quentin didn't push further. "Don't worry, Matthew's healthy. He'll be fine."

That night, as they lay in bed, they cherished their time alone together.

Quentin held Lauren in his arms, and she could hear the steady beat of his heart.

Quentin was reading a document when he suddenly heard Lauren's muffled voice from his embrace. "I'm sorry."

After speaking, she felt embarrassed and hid under the covers, refusing to come out no matter how much Quentin called her.

Quentin found it amusing. "You're the one apologizing, and now you're too shy to face me? Lauren, I don't see any sincerity in your apology."

As soon as he finished speaking, Lauren threw off the covers, revealing her angry little face. Her big, round eyes glared at him, making him want to tease her even more.

"Quentin, don't push it. I already apologized. What more do you want? Besides, you didn't explain anything to me."

"How was I supposed to explain in that situation?" Quentin pinched Lauren's nose playfully. "Besides, you were so mad at the time. Would you have listened to me?"

Lauren laughed awkwardly under Quentin's gaze.

At that time, she probably wouldn't have listened to Quentin.

Even if he had explained that Odette's pregnancy had nothing to do with him, Lauren would have thought he was lying.

"You were about to marry Odette. How could I believe you?"

Lauren felt a bit ashamed but quickly found a justification for herself.

Quentin sighed. "No matter what, you're always right."

Lauren turned over and buried her head in Quentin's chest, wrapping her arms tightly around his lean waist. "I know I was wrong. Please don't be mad at me, okay?"

Feeling Lauren's warm touch and the fragrance at the tip of his nose, Quentin couldn't help but feel a bit restless. His hands began to wander.

"I won't be mad, but an apology isn't enough. Don't you think there should be some other form of compensation?"

Quentin's suggestive tone was unmistakable.

Even Lauren, as naive as she was, understood. Blushing, she nodded slightly despite her embarrassment.

With Lauren's consent, Quentin wasted no time. He flipped over and pinned her beneath him.

In the moonlight, Lauren could barely make out the predatory look in Quentin's eyes. It made her a little scared, but more than that, it filled her with an inexplicable thrill.

They didn't sleep a wink that night.

The next morning, Lauren woke up with dark circles under her eyes.

As soon as she got up, she felt a soreness in her waist and saw the marks all over her body, reminders of the previous night's intensity.

"Careful, does your waist still hurt?"

Two large hands suddenly reached out from behind her, resting on her waist.

Quentin's voice, still husky from sleep, sounded seductive to Lauren.

She glared at Quentin. "You have the nerve to ask. I told you to stop last night."

Lauren's eyes held the allure of the previous night. Her glare made Quentin's body go weak, and his hands roamed over her waist.

"Are you sure you wanted me to stop? Later, you were the one clinging to me, not letting me go."

Quentin's sexy voice reminded Lauren of the previous night's events. Her ears turned red, and Quentin couldn't resist touching them.

"Shut up. How can you talk about it? Move, I need to get ready. Matthew has to go to school."

"What's the rush? Even if you don't show up, the butler will take Matthew to school. There won't be any problems."

Quentin's large hands held Lauren firmly on the bed.

She blushed and playfully hit his chest. Her pink cheeks were more beautiful than spring blossoms, and Quentin's eyes darkened.

With the woman he loved in his arms, he couldn't stay calm.

Lauren didn't even make it to the bathroom before Quentin pulled her back into bed for another round.

This time, Lauren slept until the afternoon.

When she finally went downstairs, she felt the butler's gaze on her, filled with a knowing smile. "Mrs. Lauren Robinson, Mr. Quentin Robinson has already had the kitchen prepare food for you. It's ready whenever you are."

Even though Lauren knew the butler was an old family servant, his teasing gaze made her uncomfortable.

She coughed to hide her embarrassment. "I'm just hungry."
