Chapter 160 Returning to the Ancestral Home

Nearly his entire life, George worked at the Robinson Estate. He considered Jessica as his family, not simply his employer.

George sighed and said sadly, "Grandma Robinson misses you and Matthew. Please take Matthew back to visit her since she has always loved you like a granddaughter. I'm begging you!"

Lauren's eyes welled up with tears as she looked at George's slightly hunched back, feeling an immense pain in her heart. She knew George wasn't good at expressing his emotions, but today, he was pleading with her so emotionally that she couldn't bear it.

"George, don't be like this. I know Grandma has been good to me. I was wrong. I'll go back with you to see her now," Lauren said, helping George up and agreeing to go back with him.

She had been foolish. She had been so determined to avoid Quentin that she had cruelly refused to see Jessica. After all, Matthew was the child Jessica thought about day and night, but she had deprived her of that happiness.

Lauren quickly packed her bags and got into George's car with Matthew.

When they arrived at the Robinson Estate, Lauren got out of the vehicle holding Matthew, only to be greeted by Quentin.

Seeing Quentin again, he looked much thinner. Lauren glanced at him out of the corner of her eye and then walked past him as if he was nothing but air.

Quentin reached out to grab Lauren but ultimately didn't step forward. He had promised her that he wouldn't contact her again, so now they could only be strangers.

Lauren felt a pang of sadness in her heart. It was uncomfortable, so she became even more determined to see Quentin as little as possible in the future to ease her heart.

Lauren carried Matthew upstairs. Jessica had heard they were coming and had wanted to get out of bed, but she was too weak. Even sitting up took a lot of effort.

Lauren knocked on the door. Hearing Jessica's voice from inside, she excitedly walked in. Seeing Jessica's frail face, a wave of pain and guilt washed over her.

"Grandma, how did you become like this?" Lauren asked as she couldn't hold back any longer, and tears streamed down her face like broken pearls.

Jessica's eyes filled with tears as she smiled and said, "Lauren, come here quickly. Let me have a good look at you and see if Matthew has grown."

Lauren walked over quickly, sat beside Jessica, and gently placed Matthew in her arms.

"Grandma, we're all fine. I'm sorry for making you worry because of my stubbornness," Lauren said.

Jessica lovingly held Matthew, reluctant to let go. She calmly said, "I know all about your issues with Quentin. I don't blame you. It's Quentin who has wronged you and made you suffer so much. I've already punished him for you, but Quentin swears he didn't do anything to betray you, so you..."

Jessica didn't finish her sentence, fearing her words would burden Lauren. But she was also afraid that she wouldn't live to see Lauren and Quentin reconcile.

In her old age, she had let go of many things, but her regrets had only grown. People were selfish. She wanted to keep Lauren and Matthew. If she could return to the happiest times, she would be willing to leave this world forever.

Lauren forced a smile and said, "Grandma, I already know all about Quentin's whereabouts during those days, but I just can't convince myself. My most painful memories are stuck in those two years of waiting and the anxious days in the hospital. I can never forget that pain. I admit I can't be strong this time, so I want to be a little selfish and live the life I want. Because I really can't see any hope in Quentin anymore."

Jessica sighed deeply after hearing Lauren's words.

"Losing you is Quentin's biggest regret and loss in this life. Lauren, let me say something selfish. Seeing me like this, you know I don't have much time left. My only wish is for you and Quentin to reconcile. I'm not trying to force you to get back with Quentin, but I want you to try opening your heart to him again. Maybe there's still a chance for you two," as Jessica spoke, tears fell from her eyes.

Jessica had many regrets in her life. She never thought that in her old age, she would still be so worried and even make things difficult for Lauren.

"Grandma," Lauren said, feeling troubled. She didn't know how to respond. She didn't want to hurt Jessica's feelings again, but she couldn't let go of those painful days.

In the end, Jessica compromised.

She gently remarked, "Alright, Lauren, don't feel troubled. Just pretend I didn't say anything. It's rare for you to come back. I won't make things difficult for you. I see you've lost a lot of weight. It would help if you took good care of yourself and Matthew out there. If you have any difficulties, call George. He will definitely help you solve them."

Lauren nodded vigorously in agreement. She urged, "Grandma, don't worry about us. It would help if you took care of yourself. Matthew still needs you to play with him when he grows up!"

Jessica smiled. Then she bitterly said, "When will Matthew grow up? I'm afraid I won't live to see that day!"

"Grandma, you mustn't say such things. You will live a long time and watch Matthew grow up, marry, and have children!" Lauren said loudly.

Jessica gently touched Matthew's little face. She said jokingly, "If it happens as you say, I would become an immortal fairy!"

The atmosphere in the room lightened a bit, and then there was a knock on the door. It was George.

"Grandma Robinson, Mr. Robinson is here again. Do you want to see him this time?" George asked in a low voice.

Lauren's smile froze, feeling uncomfortable all over.

Jessica said coldly, "Send him back. Although he comes a thousand times, I won't see him. Tell him not to come again!"

Hearing this, Lauren was a bit shocked. 'How could Grandma be so harsh on Quentin? Is it because of me?' Lauren thought.

As George left the room, Jessica continued to play with Matthew, smiling.

Lauren didn't know what to say at that moment. Sitting, she felt lost.

Jessica noticed Lauren's distraction and said, "Lauren, do you think I'm being too harsh? I know Quentin has it tough, but like you, I have unresolved conflicts in my heart.

"Though Quentin is my grandson, I can't tolerate him forever. This time, he was indeed wrong, so if you don't forgive him, I won't see him either."

Lauren stared blankly at Jessica, feeling a bitter taste in her heart. She forced a smile, pretending not to care, but the pain was undeniable.

She ignored Quentin and took Matthew away, and even Jessica, his only relative, wouldn't see him. He must be feeling very bitter inside.
