Chapter 225 Delivered to the Door
Lauren saw Quentin laughing at her joke and felt a bit embarrassed. Only then did she realize that Matthew had picked up bad habits from Quentin after spending just half a day with him. Matthew never used to play with her like this.
Not wanting to face Quentin any longer, she decided to use her trump card and leave.
Lauren said, "Matthew, it's time for bed. Let's go."
Matthew pouted and looked pitifully at Quentin, saying, "Daddy, I'm going back now. If you miss me and have some free time, please come and play with me. I'm really lonely at home."
Quentin squatted down, pinched Matthew's chubby cheeks, and said, "Be good."
Matthew nodded and looked at Lauren, but she had nothing to say to Quentin. She was eager to escape and had no intention of dealing with Quentin.
Just as Lauren was about to turn away, Quentin reached out and grabbed her hand. "What? You teach Matthew to be polite, but won't you even say goodbye to me? Is this how you set an example for him?"
Quentin's tone was teasing, as if he had forgotten the tension between him and Lauren. Lauren looked at Quentin warily, unsure of his intentions.
"I know how to educate Matthew," Lauren said disdainfully, pulling her hand away, her tone full of hostility.
Quentin didn't mind. He seemed to find teasing Lauren quite amusing.
Quentin said firmly, "You're scared."
"That's ridiculous. What would I be scared of? I'm not afraid of you treacherous scoundrel," Lauren retorted.
Matthew sensed the tension and tugged on Lauren's hand, trying to calm her down, but Lauren ignored him.
When Ethan mentioned the past today, it transported Lauren back to three years ago, to her most desperate moment.
Lauren still couldn't believe Quentin could do such a thing. Fortunately, she had Ethan; otherwise, she would have lost Matthew.
Quentin's face turned cold. He didn't understand why Lauren called him treacherous.
Quentin asked, "What do you mean by that?"
He had hoped to get along with Lauren for Matthew's sake, but he realized they couldn't have a civil conversation.
"You know exactly what I mean. Stop this charade. It's pointless because I won't be fooled again," Lauren sneered.
In a fit of urgency, Quentin grabbed Lauren's hand again. He needed her to explain herself. He had never done anything he was ashamed of!
"Let go! Quentin, is this your idea of manners?" A voice shouted from behind Lauren. Ethan approached them with a stern face.
Lauren forcefully shook off Quentin's hand, gave him a disdainful look, and then walked over to Ethan with Matthew.
Quentin glared at Ethan and said coldly, "What's this? Mr. White, do you enjoy playing the hero?"
Ethan responded with a smile, "Yes, I do enjoy it. More importantly, I like rescuing damsels in distress, especially when you're the one causing the trouble. Besides, you're still taking Lauren right on my doorstep. Aren't you taking me for granted?"
Lauren held onto Ethan's arm, feeling there was no need to continue arguing with Quentin, so she prepared to leave.
However, Ethan had no intention of leaving. He smiled at Lauren and said, "Lauren, you and Matthew must be tired. You should rest. I have some matters to discuss with Mr. Robinson."
Lauren looked at Ethan with concern, not knowing why she felt worried. However, that one look ignited Quentin's anger.
After Lauren and Matthew left, Ethan turned back to Quentin with a smug smile and said, "Mr. Robinson, shall we talk somewhere else?"
Quentin didn't refuse, and the two drove off from Ethan's villa, one car following the other.
When Matthew returned to the villa, he immediately ran to Kimberly's room to tell her he was back.
Sure enough, Kimberly hugged Matthew tightly, refusing to let go.
Seeing the tears in Kimberly's eyes, Matthew wiped them away and said, "Grandma, why are you crying? Are you mad at me?"
Kimberly shook her head, "No, Matthew, I'm just worried you might get bullied elsewhere. Promise me you won't go to Quentin anymore, okay?"
Matthew hesitated and said, "Why? Do you not like Daddy either?"
Lauren quickly came over to persuade Kimberly, "Mom, did you forget what I said earlier? Adults' issues shouldn't make Matthew suffer. Quentin is still Matthew's father; we can't be selfish and make Matthew miserable."
Kimberly understood the reasoning but still felt compelled to act this way.
She sighed, "I get it. I was just complaining. Matthew, forget what I said. It's fine; I'm happy to see you."
Matthew didn't quite understand why the adults kept changing their minds, but he nodded anyway.
"By the way, where's Ethan? Tell him Matthew is back. He must be worried," Kimberly said to Lauren.
Before Lauren could speak, Matthew chimed in, "Uncle Ethan went out to talk with Daddy."
Kimberly fell into deep thought, hoping Ethan could finally make Quentin leave Lauren alone.
Lauren remained silent, wondering what Ethan wanted to say to Quentin. However, she also thought she might be overthinking it; maybe they were just talking about work, which had nothing to do with her.
Quentin and Ethan arrived at a bar and found a secluded corner to sit in.
"Go ahead, Mr. White. What do you want to say?" Quentin asked coldly.
Ethan laughed heartily, "Mr. Robinson, are you in such a hurry? The night is perfect for a chat. Don't you want to clear things up with me about Lauren and Matthew?"
Quentin's eyes grew deep, "I don't think there's anything to discuss about them. Lauren is my ex-wife, Matthew is my biological son, and you're an outsider. Do you think you have the right to talk to me about them?"
Quentin's harsh words were meant to hurt Ethan, but they didn't faze him. Instead, Ethan laughed even more.
Ethan remarked, "Mr. Robinson, don't be so hasty. Lauren and I are now a couple, which means I have every right to be involved in her matters. Do you still have any doubts about me?"
Ethan's smug demeanor pierced Quentin's heart. No wonder Lauren and Ethan had exchanged such affectionate glances earlier.
He had thought that after three years without any progress, their relationship would not progress any further, but he was laughably wrong.
