Chapter 440 The Wedding Approaches
Lauren locked herself in her room, blocking out every ray of sunlight, staring at her haggard reflection in the mirror.
She finally faced the truth about her feelings. She couldn't let go. Watching Quentin hold Odette's hand shattered her heart, but she had been deceiving herself all along.
Tears blurred her vision, and Lauren's sight became hazy.
She had lost him. She had cherished him deeply, but all she got in return was endless torment and imprisonment.
People are like that; the more they suffer, the more they yearn for the past.
Her grandmother's face kept appearing in Lauren's mind over and over again.
Lauren vaguely saw a familiar figure in the morning light, saying good morning to her. Suddenly, everything around her darkened, and she felt herself falling endlessly.
"No, no!"
Lauren flailed her arms, trying to escape the nightmare. She struggled to open her eyes and realized she had fallen asleep without noticing.
She glanced in the mirror and was startled by her reflection. Her pale face was streaked with obvious tear marks, and her eyes were slightly swollen.
Lauren quickly splashed cold water on her face, barely pulling herself together. In the entire house, only Theodosia was kind to her.
After the last incident, the servants were afraid to mess with Lauren again.
But they still used various malicious tactics against her. Lauren had to stay vigilant against these hidden threats.
Odette's antics had left Lauren feeling agitated. She decided to take a walk in the garden to clear her mind.
As she descended the stairs, she heard cries for help.
She saw Theodosia being held by three burly women, while another was about to strike her.
The sight of Lauren stunned them.
If Lauren hadn't arrived in time, Theodosia would have been beaten to a pulp.
"Get out."
Lauren didn't hesitate and shouted angrily.
The servants feared Lauren because of her connection to Quentin, so they vented their anger on Theodosia. They hadn't expected Lauren to show up.
They fled in panic, leaving Theodosia curled up on the floor, her arm slightly scratched, looking pitiful.
"Are you okay?"
Lauren asked with concern, quickly checking Theodosia's injuries.
As Theodosia wiped her arm, she asked, "I'm fine, but why have you been crying?"
Theodosia was very observant. Despite Lauren's efforts to hide it, she had noticed.
Lauren replied with a hint of regret, "I was just thinking about the past. I can't believe tomorrow is their wedding. And he wants me to attend, to watch him marry someone else."
The narrow stairwell was covered in dust.
Sitting beside Theodosia, Lauren couldn't hold back her tears. She bit her lip, trying not to look too miserable.
Theodosia saw everything and felt a strong urge to tell Lauren the truth. But she could only pat Lauren's shoulder and say, "Things might not be what they seem."
Lauren was taken aback, staring at Theodosia in surprise. She realized Theodosia had hinted at something similar before.
But before Lauren could think further, an unexpected guest arrived.
Unlike her earlier visit, Odette now appeared gentle, clinging to Quentin's side. She was surprised to see Lauren and Theodosia coming out of the stairwell.
Odette was secretly pleased.
Quentin hadn't looked at Lauren once since he arrived, making Odette believe he despised Lauren.
Quentin sat on the couch, his expression unreadable to Lauren. She could only see his profile, and it made her chest feel tight, like something was stuck there.
Quentin was also in pain. He avoided looking at Lauren because he feared his longing would ruin his plan.
He thought that if the plan succeeded, he could rescue Matthew and Kimberly tomorrow, and the misunderstanding with Lauren would be resolved.
Then, no one could come between him and Lauren.
Odette completely misunderstood. She sat on Quentin's lap, wrapping her arms around his neck in a seductive pose.
But to Quentin, her actions were as ridiculous and repulsive as a dancing elephant at the zoo.
"Get off."
Quentin said impatiently.
When Odette didn't respond, he pushed her away without hesitation, warning, "I told you, I won't repeat myself."
Quentin stood up, straightening his suit. Odette, pushed aside, looked at Quentin with teary eyes, saying, "Quentin, how can you treat me like this?"
Lauren didn't want to watch Odette and Quentin's flirtation any longer. She decided to leave while Quentin wasn't causing trouble.
"Stop!"
It was inevitable.
Odette was startled, standing behind Quentin.
"What do you want, Mr. Robinson?"
Lauren asked, pretending to be nonchalant, but her heart was uneasy.
"Don't be late for the wedding tomorrow. And as my ex-wife, don't dress too shabbily."
"What do you mean?"
Lauren was furious at Quentin's deliberate mockery. She scoffed, "You two are a perfect match. Odette already told me this morning."
Lauren looked at Quentin with disdain, standing tall and staring him down. "But I'm not going."
"You don't have a choice."
Quentin pretended to be angry, but he was secretly delighted. Seeing Lauren's jealousy made him smile slightly.
Lauren noticed the subtle change, as she was close and observant.
'Why are you smiling?' Lauren wondered, hesitating for a moment. The next second, she felt a painful grip on her wrist.
Odette saw Lauren and Quentin's standoff and was pleased, blaming Lauren for Quentin's bad mood.
"Quentin, you're crazy. I'm not going. I'm not interested in attending your wedding."
