Chapter 165 The Greatest Dilemma

Lauren had no clue what Quentin wanted to say. They hadn't spoken since their last blowout.

"Spit it out. I need to take care of Matthew," Lauren said, not even glancing at Quentin.

Quentin fidgeted, his hand hovering over his knee before dropping back down.

"Lauren, Sophia came to see you, right? After she explained everything, what do you think?" Quentin asked, eyes full of hope.

Lauren's hand tightened into a fist. Sophia had indeed come by, but it felt more like gloating than explaining.

Lauren had lost it and cursed Sophia out.

She wondered how Sophia had spun the story to Quentin. Curious, but not enough to care.

"Yeah, I know," Lauren replied icily.

Her coldness cut Quentin deep. This wasn't the reaction he had hoped for.

Lauren was always upfront, wearing her heart on her sleeve. If she wasn't running into his arms now, it meant Sophia's explanation had flopped.

"Lauren, don't you believe me? I really went to save her that day, but I got caught up in a mess," Quentin pleaded.

"Enough. I believe you went to save Sophia. It doesn't matter anymore; we're done," Lauren said, turning to leave, not wanting to hear more.

Quentin couldn't let her go. He grabbed her hand. "If you believe me, then why are you still hung up on this? Do you really think there's something between Sophia and me? That we've rekindled old feelings?"

Lauren shot him a sarcastic look. "That's your problem. No need to explain."

"Fine, what do you want? What are you hung up on?" Quentin stepped in front of her, demanding an answer.

Lauren felt a headache coming on. Why was Quentin still pushing her?

"I don't love you anymore!" Lauren snapped. "Loving you makes me terrified of losing myself, being alone in a dark room, and dying lonely. Quentin, you can't reassure me. The day you saved Sophia showed you valued her more than me. So I respect your choice," she shouted.

"Kidnappers threatened Sophia because of me that day. I had to save her! I hope you understand." Quentin was desperate, but he saw Lauren's patience wearing thin.

Lauren smiled coldly. "Of course I do. Sophia might die that day, and I, however, wouldn't have any problems giving birth, so it was only right for you to choose to save her. Objectively, I get it, but subjectively, I can't convince myself."

She yanked her hand free and walked away. This time, Quentin didn't have the guts to chase after her.

He was confused by what Lauren meant. Seeing her stubbornness, he feared chasing her would be pointless.

Seeing Quentin didn't follow, Lauren felt a wave of relief. She headed back to her room to be with Matthew, not wanting to face Quentin again.

Jessica had been eavesdropping on their conversation. Watching Lauren storm off, she shook her head in frustration. Lauren and Quentin were still too young and reckless!

Lauren was dozing off in her room when she heard arguing downstairs. Thinking Ulysses had arrived, she quickly ran down to check.

Jessica was fuming. "Today is Matthew's one-month birthday, and I don't want to lose my temper. If you have any sense, you'll know you're not welcome here. Leave now!"

Sophia stood at the door, looking sad. "Mrs. Robinson, I'm genuinely happy for you and Quentin. I brought a gift for Matthew. Please don't be angry."

When Quentin saw Lauren coming downstairs, he clearly saw her eyes turn cold and sharp the moment she saw Sophia, which make his heart sink.

This was his worst fear. Quentin hadn't expected Sophia to show up. Her presence would not only anger Jessica but also make Lauren despise him even more.

Lauren walked over to Jessica with a polite smile. "Grandma, don't be angry. She's a guest now, and we should treat her with courtesy."

Jessica was fuming. Seeing Lauren so composed made her feel even guiltier.

Sophia's arrival had completely ruined the day's plans. From the moment Sophia betrayed Quentin, Jessica had known she wasn't a simple-minded woman.

Sophia looked at Lauren with tearful eyes. "Thank you, Lauren. I want to congratulate you. I might not have the right, but I was sincere in my apology last time."

Lauren chuckled. "I believe you."

Jessica unhappily patted Lauren's hand, thinking, 'How could Lauren be so naive? Did she really want to invite trouble?'

Sophia wiped her tears and walked towards Lauren. "I bought some clothes for Matthew. I hope you like them."

Lauren graciously accepted the gift box. "Thank you."

Lauren and Sophia smiled at each other. Their relationship seemed harmonious, but Jessica could sense Lauren's displeasure.

Jessica was even more worried that Sophia's presence would push Lauren further away from Quentin.

Quentin was really incompetent. On such an important day, Sophia showed up. It was obvious Quentin had leaked the information to her. This would only break Lauren's heart more.

"Sophia, I haven't seen Matthew yet. Is it convenient for me to see him?" Sophia asked with a smile.

Lauren smiled coldly. "I'm sorry, but Matthew is sleeping now. Maybe you can see him when he wakes up."

"That's enough. George, I'm tired. Please see her out!" Jessica interjected coldly. She couldn't stand the atmosphere any longer.
