Chapter 308 Letting Go

Lauren found out about Quentin's car accident from the evening news. The news hit her so hard that she didn't even notice she was wearing two different shoes.

When she rushed to the hospital, she saw Quentin through the window, looking at Sophia with so much affection.

Quentin's face was serious, his hand resting on the hospital bed, and the worry and pain in his eyes were clear. He was watching over the sleeping Sophia so tenderly, like he was afraid anyone would wake her up.

Lauren's mind went blank. She had no idea why Sophia was also in the hospital or if this meant Quentin and Sophia were together now.

She forced a bitter smile, then quietly left the doorway of the hospital room, like she had never been there.

Seeing Quentin so caring towards Sophia, Lauren felt a strange sense of loss. But after thinking it over, even if Quentin chose Sophia, it had nothing to do with her. She was just his ex-wife, a part of his past.

Sophia was right; she had taken Lauren's place, while Lauren was left in the past, forgotten by everyone.

Lauren shook her head lightly; she shouldn't have come. Rushing to the hospital was just setting herself up for more pain. Now that she had seen it with her own eyes, she could finally let go. But she had to admit, seeing Quentin safe and sound made her feel a bit better.

Passing by a mirror in the hospital lobby, Lauren saw her messy hair and mismatched clothes. The joke was on her; she not only looked like a madwoman to strangers but also felt like she was losing her mind!

Lauren didn't know how she got home. When she walked in, she was greeted by an excited Ulysses.

"Lauren, you're amazing! I knew Quentin would help if you asked. Those guys Brent sent to watch me are gone now, and I don't have to worry about them anymore," Ulysses said, full of praise for Quentin.

Kimberly rolled her eyes at him, then turned to Lauren with an apologetic look. "Your shameless dad followed me here. I wouldn't let him in, so he made a scene outside."

"What nonsense are you talking about? I'm Lauren's dad; this should be my home too. Why can't I come in?" Ulysses shot back.

Ulysses and Kimberly started arguing again. Lauren, feeling overwhelmed, just wanted some peace, but even that seemed impossible.

Kimberly screamed, "Three years ago, you cut ties with Lauren and me, and now you shamelessly say we're family? How low can you go?"

Ulysses ignored Kimberly, lying on the couch eating popcorn and watching TV, completely at ease.

Grabbing Lauren's hand, Kimberly spoke, "Lauren, you decide. I can't deal with this shameless man anymore."

Lauren walked over to Ulysses, took the TV remote from his hand, turned off the TV, and looked at him seriously without saying a word.

Ulysses felt a bit guilty under her gaze and slowly sat up, looking at Lauren. "Lauren, if you've got something to say, just say it. Why are you staring at me?"

Lauren's eyes were sharp. "Dad, do you realize your mistakes?"

Over the years, with Kimberly putting up with him, Ulysses had turned into a selfish jerk. His macho attitude made it impossible for him to see his own faults.

"What did I do wrong?" Ulysses's face darkened. In his mind, Lauren, his daughter, daring to question him was a blow to his pride.

Lauren decided it was time for a serious talk with Ulysses to point out all his mistakes. Otherwise, with the way he was going, he'd definitely cause more trouble.

"Dad, why were you at the casino? And why did you mess with the Obsidian Gang's business? How much of those millions of dollars from the past three years do you have left? When do you plan to pay Quentin back?" Lauren fired off her questions, making Ulysses's face grow darker.

He angrily slammed the table, pointing at Lauren. "You got Quentin to help me with a small favor, and now you dare to criticize me? Lauren, I raised you for over a decade, and this is how you treat your father?"

"Dad, don't you feel any remorse?" Lauren ignored Ulysses's angry words and kept pressing.

Ulysses stood up. "It's just a house. If you don't want to take care of me, just say so. Why bring up these trivial matters? Quentin gave that money willingly, so why should I return it? Lauren, if you have any sense, you'd try to remarry Quentin. You already have a child together, so why all the fuss?"

Kimberly hurried over, pushing him and cursing, "You heartless man! When Lauren was in trouble, you didn't help or care for her, but now you have the nerve to give her such bad advice. Get out of here!"

Ulysses pushed Kimberly aside, continuing arrogantly, "I really think you two are out of your minds. Women are lining up to marry Quentin, while you act all high and mighty. Do you even know how much that's worth? Your so-called dignity won't get you anywhere."

Lauren fell into deep thought over Ulysses's words. Objectively speaking, Quentin was indeed a man worth spending a lifetime with. After all that had happened, Lauren had to admit Quentin had many good qualities.

He was kind, upright, and responsible. He was wise, and his arrogance was hard to dislike. Even to his ex-wife, who had hurt him deeply, Quentin offered help, showing that he was indeed a good person.

Thinking of this, Lauren felt a deep pain. Whether Quentin was a good person or not had nothing to do with her; she shouldn't think so much.

"Dad, I just hope you can promise me to stay away from those dangerous people. Can't you just live a simple life?" Lauren said weakly.

She just wanted her family to be safe and happy. Why couldn't Ulysses even promise her this?

"What's the point of a simple life? You don't get it. A man needs to go out and make something of himself. Do you really want me to just sit around at home all day like a woman?" Ulysses retorted disdainfully.

Lauren's face turned pale. "Fine, I can't change what kind of life you choose, but Dad, I'm telling you today, if you cause trouble again, don't come to me. I can't help you anymore."

Ulysses didn't listen. "I know you can't help me, but you have Quentin."

"Don't mention him again. He's already moved on!" Lauren shouted angrily.

Her shout startled Ulysses and Kimberly. They immediately wanted to ask her what had happened, but Lauren's expression made it clear she wasn't in the mood to talk.
