Chapter 464 A Different Identity
Maeve's face went from excited to furious in a heartbeat. She clenched her jaw and snapped, "Why? My skills are top-notch. Even if I'm not the lead designer, I should at least be your assistant. Mrs. Robinson wouldn't let personal grudges make Robinson Conglomerate lose valuable talent, right?"
Lauren finally gave her a serious look. "You're right, your skills are good. But my teacher taught me that no matter how skilled you are, the most important quality for a designer is humility. Ms. Harrington, do your actions today reflect that?"
Maeve opened her mouth but couldn't come up with a defense. Seeing her at a loss for words, Lauren pressed on.
"From the moment you walked in here, you've been flaunting your uniqueness and superiority. Just based on that, you're not qualified to be my assistant. And Robinson Conglomerate doesn't welcome employees with that kind of arrogance. Please leave."
This was the first time Lauren had shown her tough side in front of others, always remembering Joseph's first lesson.
"As a designer, humility is essential. If you can't be humble, no matter how skilled you are, you don't count as a designer."
Maeve's actions today had crossed Lauren's line, which was why she was being kicked out of Robinson Conglomerate.
Maeve tightened her grip on her bag, her face showing her frustration. But with Lauren's clear words, she knew better than to push it.
Before leaving, she threw out a harsh remark, "You'll regret this."
The meeting room quickly emptied, leaving only Daryl. Lauren wouldn't interfere with how Daryl was dealt with; that was up to the higher-ups.
With Felix's help, Lauren quickly got the hang of her new work environment. Even though the design department was new, it was well-staffed and had all the necessary equipment.
After a tour, Lauren had a better understanding of Robinson Conglomerate's strength. It was a big company, able to get a handle on a completely new field so quickly.
"Mrs. Robinson, do you need me to go in with you?" Felix asked, standing at the design department's entrance, looking concerned.
After the earlier incident, Felix was worried someone else might provoke Lauren.
Lauren shook her head calmly, "No need, Felix. I'm an employee of Robinson Conglomerate now. You don't have to accompany me everywhere. If any issues come up, I can handle them myself."
Seeing Lauren's confidence, Felix agreed, "Alright then. If you run into any trouble, feel free to come to me."
After Felix left, Lauren stepped into the design department.
The department manager had been replaced, and while he didn't know the exact reason for Daryl's dismissal, he understood one thing clearly: Lauren was someone he absolutely couldn't afford to offend.
"Mrs. Robinson, you're here? Felix has already completed your onboarding paperwork. Here's your employee badge. You can clock in and out by swiping it. As the lead designer, you have your own office and lounge. Is there anything else you need?"
The new manager's constant use of formal address made Lauren uncomfortable. "You don't need to use formal titles with me. I'm not that particular. Just treat me as one of your employees, Terrence."
"Mrs. Robinson, saying that makes me quite uneasy. Your status is different from theirs."
Daryl had worked hard for over a decade to climb to the manager position, only to be demoted for offending one person. Terrence Wheeler was extremely cautious, always keeping Daryl as a warning sign.
"How is it different? Please treat me as an employee, Mr. Wheeler."
Under Lauren's stern gaze, Terrence reluctantly changed his tone.
"Yes, Ms. Walker. Please follow me; the team is waiting for you."
Inside the design department, the existing employees were gathered, eagerly discussing the new member.
"Have you heard? The new lead designer is Maeve!"
"Who? Maeve? She's my idol! Robinson Conglomerate managed to hire her?"
"Just Maeve? Robinson Conglomerate can hire anyone. Only a fool wouldn't accept their offer."
"True, but I'm so excited to see my idol soon! She recently won a major domestic design award. The newspapers were full of her news."
As the group discussed, Terrence led Lauren inside. All eyes turned to Terrence's side, only to see a stranger. Everyone was stunned, exchanging puzzled looks.
"Who is she? Wasn't it supposed to be Maeve?"
"No idea, but I feel like I've seen her somewhere before."
"I remember now! She's Mrs. Robinson! Why is she in the design department? Is she our lead designer?"
"What about Maeve?"
"Stop talking. Mrs. Robinson is here; Maeve can't possibly join now."
Though their voices were low, their expressions were clear. Terrence awkwardly glanced at Lauren, worried she might be angry.
"Alright, everyone, quiet down. Let me introduce our new lead designer. Lauren, I think you've all seen her before."
"Mrs. Lauren Robinson, right? We've all seen the news about her and Mr. Quentin Robinson."
The speaker, who had earlier called Maeve his idol, couldn't help but sound sarcastic, feeling bitter about Maeve being replaced.
As soon as he finished, someone next to him nudged him and smiled at Lauren, "Mrs. Robinson, please don't mind him. He always talks like that, not targeting you specifically."
