Chapter 306 Struggle After Despair

Lauren stopped fighting and just stayed put in the car, buckling up her seatbelt. Quentin saw her do this and grinned, clearly pleased.

They both stayed quiet as the car crawled along. Quentin didn't head towards Ethan's villa, which threw Lauren off. Did he already know she had moved out?

Lauren shook her head slightly, not wanting to get lost in her own thoughts. She then gave Quentin the address of her new place.

"Got it," Quentin replied, not sounding the least bit surprised.

Thinking back to the crazy scene with the Obsidian Gang, Lauren still felt a chill. She glanced at Quentin, wondering how many times he'd been in such dangerous spots.

She knew Quentin had a complicated past and lots of ties to the mafia. But if his life was always this risky, what good were all his money and power?

"Mr. Robinson, you promised Brent you'd help him out earlier. Is it really tough? Will it mess things up for you?" Lauren finally asked after mulling it over.

Quentin kept his eyes on the road, his strong jawline showing a bit of stubble, and his presence filled the car. When he heard her question, he raised an eyebrow. "Are you worried about me?"

"No, it's not that..." Lauren quickly tried to explain, but ended up coughing.

Quentin chuckled softly. He thought she'd have grown up a lot after three years in Pariz, but she was still the same straightforward and impatient person. She was a bit of a goof; if she was worried, she should just say it. They were adults; why beat around the bush?

Lauren felt super embarrassed by Quentin's smile. She didn't know why she got so flustered. It seemed like every time she tried to put on a front, he saw right through her. Her hands fidgeted in her lap, showing how conflicted and uneasy she felt.

"After all, you agreed to help him to solve my dad's issue. I've thought it over; if you can't handle it, don't do it. If worse comes to worst, I'll send my dad abroad so Brent can't find him," Lauren said.

Quentin's eyes lit up. He raised an eyebrow. "Is there anything in City A that I can't handle?"

"You say that, but Brent almost chopped off your arm," Lauren muttered under her breath.

Quentin, this cocky guy, thought he was untouchable, but he had almost lost an arm just now. The thought of it made Lauren feel scared. If Brent's knife had really come down, she would have felt so guilty.

Lauren's words didn't escape Quentin. He smiled a bit, looking at her with some pride. "Do you really think he could have chopped off my arm?"

Hearing this, Lauren got suspicious. Thinking back to Quentin's behavior at the Obsidian Gang, he had been way too calm, not like someone who was helpless.

He had waited for Brent to bring the knife and then mentioned his leverage at the last second, making Brent look foolish. This way, he protected himself, embarrassed Brent, and solved Ulysses' problem, hitting three birds with one stone!

But how did Quentin know his words would catch Brent's interest? When did he even have time to dig into Brent's brother? Lauren was stumped. She had just told Quentin about Ulysses, and then he went straight to the Obsidian Gang.

Quentin saw the confusion on Lauren's face and gave her a knowing nod, acknowledging her doubts.

Lauren sighed, "Didn't you think, what if your plan failed? What if you couldn't save your arm?"

"In my world, there's no 'what if,' only 100% certainty," Quentin replied coolly.

Of course, only Quentin could talk like that.

"Anyway, thanks for today. And about that villa design I promised you, I'll definitely get it done," Lauren said.

"Okay." Quentin nodded.

After that, they didn't say much. When the car finally pulled up to Lauren's place, she got out, gave Quentin a long look, and walked away without turning back.

Once home, Lauren didn't want to talk to anyone. The day had been too intense, and for a moment, she had even thought she might die.

After today, she realized Ethan was great as a friend but not as a lover. The responsibilities a lover should handle, Ethan just couldn't. She shouldn't be disappointed in him because she never really expected anything from him.

Lauren decided she needed to have a serious talk with Ethan, even if it would hurt him.

Quentin got back to the office and found Sophia sitting on the sofa, looking stone-faced.

"What are you doing here?" Quentin asked as he tore off his tie, took off his blood-stained shirt, and grabbed a fresh one from the wardrobe.

Sophia didn't seem to care about Quentin's disheveled state; she just kept staring at him coldly.

Quentin sensed something was off with Sophia but didn't press her. Instead, he sat at his desk and started going through some documents.

Feeling ignored again, Sophia's eyes filled with tears, making her look pitiful to anyone but Quentin.

"Quentin, what do you take me for?" Sophia's voice trembled with hurt.

Without looking up, Quentin replied, "You're my business partner."

"Business partner? I thought you understood my feelings. I thought you being around meant you had forgiven me. Turns out I was just fooling myself!" Sophia shouted.

"Don't bring up the past. There's no need for forgiveness between us; it's all behind us," Quentin said coldly.

Hearing this, Sophia felt even more desperate. "To me, those things aren't in the past! Quentin, do you really not love me anymore? Can you really just leave me?"

Sophia couldn't hold back her tears, ruining her makeup. She cried without caring about her appearance.

Maybe only now did Sophia show her true feelings. For years, Quentin had been her emotional anchor. She had convinced herself that Quentin still loved her, which gave her the strength to keep going. But reality was harsh; she had lost to time and to Lauren.
