Chapter 192 Ethan's Selfishness
Lauren turned to scrutinize Sophia. She didn't trust a word she said.
Sophia shot Lauren a disdainful look. "You clearly don't understand the law or Quentin! How can a single mom with no income afford to raise a child? Besides, Quentin always gets what he wants."
Sophia's words shook Lauren. Quentin was shrewd, cruel, and emotionless. She'd been foolish to think otherwise.
Lauren hated herself for being soft-hearted. Just because she hadn't seen Quentin in a while, she'd almost forgotten what kind of person he was.
She despised Quentin's ruthlessness and betrayal, and she loathed Sophia for being so calculating and snobbish.
She had once considered letting Matthew stay with the Robinson family for a few days, thinking it might be good for Jessica's health.
But now, there was no way she could let Matthew live with the Robinsons. How could she subject him to such a manipulative family? And she couldn't stand the thought of Sophia as his stepmother!
Lauren was determined to leave this time, to find a place where Quentin could never find her, so he could never take Matthew away.
"Well, you have a point," Lauren said weakly, her face pale.
Seeing Lauren's feeble state, Sophia felt a surge of delight. She had successfully deceived her.
"Then I wish us a pleasant cooperation this time, and may we each find our own happiness!" Sophia continued.
Lauren sneered. "Fine, goodbye!"
Sophia left with a proud stride. This time, Lauren had to leave! Lauren was too young to compete with her!
With Sophia gone, Lauren broke down in tears. Why did life treat her this way? Hadn't she lost enough already?
Lauren knew Quentin's methods. She couldn't match him if he got violent. She was terrified now and wanted to leave City A as soon as possible.
Kimberly heard the commotion and rushed over, worried. Seeing Lauren crying, she comforted her and found out what had happened.
"This Quentin is really too much! I must have been blind to think he was decent back then!" Kimberly cursed angrily.
"Mom, when Matthew wakes up, pack up. I want to leave here quickly!" Lauren said calmly.
This was inevitable. Lauren couldn't stay in City A. After she hesitated, a new issue arose. She was really unlucky!
"Okay, but shouldn't you tell Ethan about this? He's still busy with your designer plans," Kimberly's words reminded Lauren, who had almost forgotten.
Lauren took out her phone and quickly called Ethan, asking him to come over. She needed to clear things up before leaving; it wouldn't be fair to Ethan otherwise.
Ethan hurried over and, seeing Kimberly's worried face, asked, "What's going on? Did something happen?"
Lauren had Ethan sit down and then told him what Sophia had said. Ethan immediately became anxious.
"Impossible! I think Sophia is lying! Quentin has no reason to take Matthew back. After all, Matthew is his son. Even if Matthew goes back, there's no one suitable to take care of him. Why would he do that?" Ethan believed Quentin.
Lauren looked at Ethan helplessly. He was really upright and kind.
"He can hire a nanny, and if that doesn't work, Sophia can do it!" Lauren said bitterly.
"Something is off. Lauren, Kimberly, don't worry. I'll go back and investigate this thoroughly. We should be cautious about this, or else Sophia will get what she wants," Ethan suggested.
Lauren thought it over seriously and said, "Ethan, I think we should forget it. I admit that because of Richard, I considered staying. But if Quentin really wants to take Matthew away, I can't care about anything else."
"I understand, but..." Ethan stopped mid-sentence. After all, his plans hadn't materialized yet. The timing wasn't right, and he couldn't reveal them.
Ethan smiled bitterly. "So, have you decided where to go?"
Lauren shook her head. "Not yet. I'll pack up and head south. We'll leave by the day after tomorrow at the latest."
Without saying more, Ethan left Lauren's house, deciding to investigate whether Quentin intended to take Matthew away.
Ethan arranged for someone to investigate Quentin while waiting for news from Richard. In fact, he had prepared another surprise for Lauren.
His agents worked efficiently and released the investigative results. As Ethan had suspected, Sophia lied. Quentin had never met her or hired a lawyer to fight for Matthew's custody. He merely consulted a lawyer for company business.
Ethan immediately called Lauren. He wanted to tell her the truth quickly to stop her worrying.
Just then, Ethan's phone rang. It was Richard.
"Hello, Richard, do we have the results?" Ethan asked.
Richard's excited voice came through, "Yes, Mr. White, Lauren didn't let me down. Her work was very well received by Mr. Borgia, and he has agreed to take Lauren as his apprentice!"
"Really? That's fantastic!" Ethan said excitedly.
He was even more eager to call Lauren, but after a few rings, he suddenly ended the call. He wondered if he should tell Lauren about the investigation result.
Ethan hesitated and wondered if Lauren would choose to stay again once he told Lauren that Sophia was a liar and her goal was to drive her away from Quentin.
Ethan wanted Lauren to stay with him, thus he didn't want her to leave. He had worked hard to find her a way out, and it had come. He had no idea what to pick.
Love was selfish. After much consideration, Ethan decided to hide the truth about Quentin and tell Lauren the other good news. He believed Lauren would agree and be even more grateful to him. Besides, he would leave with her.
