Chapter 448 Desperate Effort
Lauren clung to Quentin, her voice trembling with fear. "Please, don't go."
Tears glistened in Lauren's eyes as she held onto Quentin tightly. "I can't lose you again," she whispered.
"Don't worry," Quentin said softly, gently prying Lauren's hands off him. He glanced at Matthew, standing nearby, and gave a reassuring smile.
Quentin rarely smiled, and when he did, it was usually for Matthew and Lauren.
Gregory stood with a remote control in one hand and a sharp knife hidden behind his back, waiting for Quentin.
As soon as Quentin reached for the remote, Gregory planned to stab him in the heart.
Quentin had no intention of letting Gregory go, but with the bomb strapped to Matthew, he couldn't risk it.
The plan was to have the police take Gregory down as soon as Quentin got the remote.
Both men had their plans, and the once lively wedding now felt eerily quiet.
The guests had all fled to the lower deck of the yacht, with some even taking lifeboats to escape.
Odette, in a daze, blamed everything on Lauren. She staggered to her feet, picked up a nylon rope used to secure the canopy, and tried to strangle Lauren.
Luckily, Matthew noticed Odette's intentions and shouted, "Mom, watch out!"
Lauren reacted quickly, dodging Odette's attack and instinctively pushing her away.
Odette, wearing high heels and surrounded by debris, tripped over the rope and fell hard, hitting her head on a pillar and losing consciousness.
Lauren, fearing more danger, quickly picked up Matthew and hid him in a corner. That's when she saw the knife Gregory was hiding.
Quentin was now just a step away from Gregory, who was about to draw his knife.
Lauren's mind went blank, and she had only one thought: to protect Quentin.
She ran towards him without hesitation.
Seeing his plan exposed, Gregory dropped the remote and lunged at Quentin with the knife.
"Quentin, watch out!" Lauren screamed, pushing Quentin aside and shielding him with her body.
Gregory's knife came down, but instead of hitting Quentin, it plunged into Lauren's back.
Lauren let out a pained gasp, her face contorted in agony. Everything happened so fast that Quentin was left in shock, staring at Lauren.
Lauren collapsed into Quentin's arms, and he held her tightly, his eyes wide with disbelief.
He couldn't fathom that Lauren had risked her life to protect him.
Gregory, equally stunned, let go of the knife and stammered, "I didn't mean to... I didn't..."
The police, seeing Gregory drop the remote, rushed in and quickly subdued him.
Gregory glared at Quentin, mocking him. "What kind of man are you, Quentin? You needed Lauren to protect you. That knife was meant for you, but she took it instead. This isn't over. You just wait."
Quentin didn't respond, his focus entirely on Lauren. He held her close, his eyes filled with sorrow.
Lauren looked up at Quentin, her hand trembling as she touched his cheek. "Your safety is all that matters," she whispered. "I told you, I love you more than life itself. Don't be sad."
With her last bit of strength, Lauren managed a smile before losing consciousness.
Quentin, terrified, shook her gently, cradling her pale face. "Lauren, stay with me. You can't die. I won't let you."
Quentin's heart ached as he realized the yacht was still far from shore, and there was no medical help in sight.
Gregory, handcuffed and being led away, laughed maniacally. "Look at you, Quentin. Was it worth it? You hurt the one you love, and now she's dying in your arms. How does it feel?"
The police, annoyed, dragged Gregory away. "Move it," one officer said.
Matthew, seeing Lauren in a pool of blood, rushed to her side, sobbing. "Dad, what do we do? Help her!"
Quentin, overwhelmed with grief, couldn't believe Lauren had sacrificed herself for him.
"Dad," Matthew called, snapping Quentin back to reality. Quentin's brow furrowed as he wrapped his coat around Lauren and stood up.
Just then, Noah and Sophia, worried about Quentin and Lauren, peeked down from the stairs.
Seeing Quentin with a bloodied Lauren, they rushed over.
"What happened? I saw Gregory being taken downstairs. Is it over?" Noah asked, panicked.
Quentin, his voice tense, replied, "Find out if there's a doctor on board. We need help, fast."
Noah nodded and hurried off, while Sophia, shaken by the scene, struggled to stand.
Quentin asked Sophia to look after Matthew and glanced coldly at the unconscious Odette. "Officer, please take care of this."
"Don't worry," the officer assured him. "We'll handle everything and get the yacht to shore as quickly as possible."
