Chapter 314 The Engagement Banquet Ends
Lauren was really kicking herself for what she did. No matter how stubborn Matthew got, she shouldn't have gone that far to discipline him.
She always thought of herself as a parent who followed all the right parenting books. She believed she had endless patience and wouldn't let her emotions take over. But today, she totally lost it.
She didn't want to admit that Quentin and Sophia's engagement had gotten to her, but the way she lashed out at Matthew made it pretty clear.
Seeing Matthew pull away from her, Lauren felt a stab of guilt.
"Matthew, I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have hit you. Can you forgive me?" Lauren couldn't hold it in anymore and started crying right in front of Matthew, full of regret.
Matthew had never seen his strong mom break down like this. He forgot all about being mad and rushed into her arms, using his little hands to wipe away her tears. "Mommy, don't cry. I know you were just worried about me. I'm not mad at you."
Hearing Matthew say that made Lauren's heart ache even more.
Just as they were having this tender moment, she heard the sound of footsteps behind her. She turned around, surprised to see Quentin walking up with a cold look on his face.
Lauren was confused. Shouldn't Quentin be with his fiancée Sophia right now? Why was he here? Had their engagement ceremony already ended?
She never would have guessed that Quentin had left Sophia and followed her out to the hallway. After Lauren left, he couldn't stay on stage any longer. Making up an excuse, he had followed her.
He hadn't thought about Sophia's feelings at all. All he knew was that Lauren drove him nuts. He had finally found a way to make Lauren come to him voluntarily and see his engagement to Sophia, but Lauren stayed calm and even gave her blessings. How could she be so heartless?
The more Quentin thought about it, the angrier he got, but he had no reason to confront her. As he hesitated, he overheard Lauren and Matthew's conversation.
"Ms. Walker, you sure have a temper. You said you'd love Matthew dearly, but this is how you act as a mother?" Quentin regretted his words as soon as they left his mouth. He hadn't meant to sound so accusatory, but it just came out that way.
Lauren felt a wave of embarrassment wash over her. Quentin was right; she had acted impulsively and irrationally today.
"I'm sorry, it was my fault. I'll change," She said sincerely. When it came to raising Matthew, Lauren was quick to admit her mistakes and fix them. Besides, Quentin wasn't wrong, so she had no reason to argue with him.
Quentin hadn't expected Lauren to back down so easily, leaving him with nothing else to say. He just stood there, staring blankly at Lauren and Matthew as they chatted and laughed.
Matthew and Lauren's relationship quickly went back to normal, and it was time for them to leave.
Lauren gave Quentin a polite smile and apologized, "I'm sorry for the trouble today. This won't happen again. Thank you, goodbye!"
Without waiting for Quentin's response, Lauren took Matthew's hand and started to leave.
As they walked past Quentin, Matthew gave him a look that screamed disappointment. It was like his beloved Daddy didn't want him anymore.
Quentin's hand clenched into a fist without him even realizing it. He hated feeling so helpless and out of control.
Maybe Lauren really didn't love him anymore. He thought about how women's love could be so fickle. She had been the one head over heels for him first, and now she claimed she didn't love him anymore. Women were truly heartless.
While Quentin was stewing in his anger, he didn't notice a pair of malicious eyes watching him from behind.
Sophia, meanwhile, was fuming. She had watched Quentin interrupt their engagement ceremony and leave the stage to find Lauren, completely humiliating her.
She especially couldn't stand the looks from the guests—mocking, ridiculing. She felt like a joke, standing there to be laughed at. This feeling was driving her insane.
She cursed in her mind, 'Quentin, how can you treat me like this? Lauren, what right do you have to laugh at me? Unforgivable! Neither of you can be forgiven!'
Now, Sophia was on stage, forcing a smile and giving a hasty explanation before hiding in the restroom, refusing to come out.
When Quentin got back, he found out Sophia had gone to the restroom. He thought about fetching her but didn't want to talk to her. So after sending her a message, he waited in the lounge.
After calming herself down, Sophia saw the message. She touched up her makeup and went to the lounge with a smile.
Entering the lounge, Sophia saw Quentin lost in thought. Her anger flared up again, convinced that Quentin was thinking about Lauren!
But she suppressed her anger and asked in a calm voice, "Quentin, have you taken care of your business?"
Quentin hadn't expected Sophia not to blame him for leaving suddenly. He felt a surge of guilt. Apologetically, he said, "Yes, almost. I just..."
"It's okay, I know you're busy. Since your business is settled, let's go back to the hall. Our engagement ceremony isn't over yet!" Sophia grabbed Quentin's hand, determined never to let him slip away.
Quentin felt his palm grow cold. He had intended to use this opportunity to provoke Lauren, but now he found himself in a tough spot. Forcing a smile, he was about to refuse when his phone rang.
He took out his phone and saw an unfamiliar number. Normally, he wouldn't answer unknown calls, but under Sophia's intense gaze, he wanted an excuse to escape. So, he answered the call.
"Mr. Robinson, hello, do you remember me?" Brent greeted smugly.
Quentin frowned and coldly replied, "Brent, get to the point."
There was a sound of clapping on the phone, followed by Brent's laughter. "Mr. Robinson, you're as sharp as ever. I know you're getting engaged today, so I rushed over to give you a big gift. I wonder if Mr. Robinson is interested in accepting it?"
"Thanks, but I really don't need your concern, Mr. Reynolds," Quentin sneered, ready to hang up.
Just then, a familiar child's voice came through the phone, "Daddy, come save me and Mommy!"
Quentin's heart skipped a beat. He couldn't mistake that voice—it was Matthew! How did Matthew end up with Brent?
Brent laughed again. "Mr. Robinson, I think you'd be eager to have a chat with me now. Haha!"
