Chapter 145 Childbirth
Lauren was taken to the hospital. Since her water had already broken, she couldn't move at all. The doctor wheeled her to undergo various examinations.
As the delivery approached, Quentin was nowhere to be found. Jessica rushed over in a panic but was of no help.
Finally, Lauren was wheeled back to the delivery room. With a solemn look, the doctor went up to Jessica and asked, "Isn't Mrs. Robinson's husband here?"
Jessica was also very anxious. She first comforted Lauren, saying, "Quentin will be here soon. He's already on his way."
"We can't wait that long. We just did an ultrasound on Lauren, and the baby's condition inside is very bad. The umbilical cord is wrapped around the neck twice, making a natural birth risky. Have you considered a C-section?" the doctor asked.
Lauren was so anxious that tears started to fall. "Doctor, do you mean the baby is in danger?"
"Yes, while it's common for the umbilical cord to be wrapped around the neck, having it wrapped twice during delivery is a serious situation. So I suggest you agree to a C-section," the doctor advised.
Jessica was very worried about Lauren's safety and even more about the baby's well-being.
"Then arrange for a C-section! Doctor, please ensure the safety of both Lauren and her child," Jessica said.
"We need a family member to sign the consent form. Is there anyone else besides her husband?" the doctor inquired.
Jessica felt awkward. Without Quentin, she didn't dare decide. In her anxiety, she fainted.
Lauren was stunned, but fortunately, the doctor was present and promptly resuscitated Jessica. However, Lauren's condition worsened.
Jessica was taken to the emergency room, leaving Lauren truly alone.
"Doctor, can I sign the document myself?" Lauren asked, her forehead covered in sweat from the pain.
The doctor shook his head. The hospital had never encountered such a situation before, and if anything went wrong, it couldn't bear the responsibility.
"Mrs. Robinson, do you have any other relatives? Quickly call them to come over. This delay is not good for you or the baby," the doctor said.
Lauren understood. At this point, she had not called her parents.
Fortunately, Housekeeper Robinson was waiting outside. The doctor quickly asked him to make the call. Housekeeper Robinson frantically called Quentin while also notifying Lauren's parents to come and sign the document.
Kimberly was both shocked and delighted to hear that Lauren was about to give birth. She rushed to the hospital immediately.
After realizing the situation, Kimberly prepared to sign the document without hesitation, but Ulysses stopped her.
"No, you can't sign. Lauren is now part of the Robinson family. If you sign and something happens to her or the baby, the Robinson family will definitely blame us," Ulysses said urgently.
At this moment, Lauren was in unbearable pain, but she couldn't give birth smoothly. The situation was causing her even more distress.
"Dad, please trust me. The Robinson family won't be unreasonable. You and Mom can rest assured. I'm afraid the baby can't wait. The situation is very critical with the cord wrapped twice," Lauren said, trying to calm down despite the pain.
Kimberly could deeply feel Lauren's pain at this moment. She signed the document without thinking more.
Quick-eyed and quick-handed, Ulysses grabbed the pen from Kimberly exactly in time.
"Kimberly, are you trying to kill me? Lauren is married now. If anything happens, the Robinson family will hold us accountable. You have to understand that!" Ulysses said.
Lauren's heart shattered at her father's words. "Dad, please don't worry. I promise that although something happens to us, Quentin won't make things difficult for you," Lauren pleaded with Ulysses not to stop Kimberly. Her urgency was not for herself but for the child in danger inside her.
Kimberly ran over to snatch the pen from Ulysses' hand and said, "Ulysses, Lauren is your daughter. How can you be so cold-blooded? If something happens to her, can you bear it? Give it to me!"
Ulysses threw the pen out the window. "If you want to stay married to me, don't sign. Think whatever you want. I'm doing this for our good."
Tears streamed down Lauren's face. She felt utterly helpless. 'Quentin, where are you? Who can save us?' She thought.
"I'll sign," A cheerful male voice came from behind them.
The man instantly approached Lauren. He bent down and looked at Lauren lovingly, concerned.
"Lauren, I'll sign for you," Ethan said.
"Ethan, why are you here?" Lauren cried even harder.
Ethan smiled. "I come to save you."
He turned to take the document from Kimberly's hand, pulled a pen from his pocket, and decisively signed his name.
Kimberly was very moved but was unsure if this could work.
"Let me sign as Lauren's cousin. If anything happens, I'll take full responsibility. The Robinson family members can come after me," Ethan said coldly to Ulysses.
Ulysses snorted. This was the best outcome. He didn't care what would happen to Lauren next and turned to leave.
"Ethan, really, thank you," Lauren said, crying and smiling weakly.
Ethan patted Lauren's shoulder and said, "Lauren, don't be afraid. We'll be waiting outside the operating room for you and the baby to come out safely."
The document was handed to the doctor, who didn't ask any more questions and arranged for Lauren's C-section.
Lauren was wheeled into the operating room by the nurse. The doctors went to make surgical preparations while she lay quietly on the bed.
The operating room was very quiet. Compared to the noise outside, it was so silent that Lauren could hear her breathing and even her heartbeat.
Lauren didn't know what she should be thinking about at this moment. She didn't even think about where Quentin was. She emptied her mind and quietly waited for the surgery to begin.
After more than ten minutes, a nurse came over and wheeled Lauren to the operating table. She and two other nurses gently moved Lauren onto the table.
Then, the nurse began to undress Lauren, removing all her clothes. Lauren felt a bit embarrassed, but seeing the doctor's calm expression, she gradually relaxed.
At this moment, a male doctor walked over and sat down beside the operating table.
"Why are you having a C-section?" the doctor asked.
Lauren started to answer but shivered.
"The baby's cord is wrapped around his neck twice. The situation isn't good. I can't have a natural birth," Lauren said, her voice trembling with a hint of sobbing.
The doctor smiled. "It's okay. Don't be nervous. The baby is stronger than you think. Sometimes they get the cord wrapped because they play with it. It's their only toy in there, you know."
The doctor's humorous words successfully eased Lauren's mind.
