Chapter 317 The Conditions for Survival

Brent shot Quentin a wicked grin. Thinking about how his company had tanked and how he almost ended up in jail because of Quentin, he felt his anger rising.

If he hadn't turned to the mafia back then, he might be six feet under by now. But luck had a funny way of working out; now Quentin was at his mercy.

Brent hadn't planned on using such dirty tactics against Quentin, but a few days ago, a woman named Ruby approached him, wanting to team up to take Quentin down.

So he went along with it, gaining an extra weapon against Quentin. He hadn't expected it to be this easy.

"I told you, I don't ask for much," Brent said, pulling out a knife and waving it in front of Quentin. "I'm just really interested in your Robinson Conglomerate. Because of you, my company went under, so it's only fair you pay me back with your Robinson Conglomerate today. So, what's it gonna be: your ex-wife and son, or the Robinson Conglomerate?"

Lauren glanced at Quentin, whose face was stern and unreadable. She figured she and Matthew didn't mean that much to him. The Robinson Conglomerate was his life's work; no way he'd give it up for her and Matthew.

But Lauren knew Quentin well. He was kind and sentimental. Even though he called her and Matthew traitors, she believed Quentin wouldn't abandon them, at least not Matthew.

Lauren wasn't naive; she knew Brent was using her and Matthew's lives to pressure Quentin. If Quentin gave in today, Brent would just keep asking for more. So there could be no sign of giving in.

She quickly interrupted, "Mr. Reynolds, please spare Matthew. I know you kidnapped me because of my father's issues. I'm willing to take all your revenge. But Matthew is just a kid; he shouldn't be dragged into adult grudges. You must have kids too, so you should understand my feelings as a mother."

Lauren hoped to touch Brent's heart, to awaken his conscience. But Brent burst into exaggerated laughter upon hearing her words.

"Hahaha, Quentin, look how adorably foolish your ex-wife is," Brent laughed so hard that tears welled up in his eyes.

Lauren hadn't expected her heartfelt words to be met with Brent's ridicule. Were her words falling on deaf ears?

"Mr. Reynolds, my child and I have truly severed all ties with Mr. Robinson, so please don't use our lives to threaten him. He won't compromise," Lauren continued, giving Quentin a subtle look, hoping he would understand.

But Quentin ignored her look, lost in his own world.

They had severed all ties? Lauren's words chilled him. Their relationship was completely over with that statement.

He wouldn't compromise? So, in Lauren's eyes, he was just a heartless man.

Quentin looked at Lauren, who was eagerly distancing herself from him, and felt a surge of anger, wanting to strangle her right then and there.

He forced himself to calm down, putting on a mocking expression. "Brent, it's been a few days, and your ambition has grown quite a bit. Yes, these two were once my family, but that's all in the past. Are you daydreaming, thinking you can trade them for my Robinson Conglomerate?"

Brent stared at Quentin, stunned. "What are you talking about?"

Quentin shrugged. "What do I mean? I mean I've got plenty of lovers, and having another kid wouldn't be a problem. So do you really think you can threaten me with them?"

Brent saw Quentin's indifferent look and couldn't tell if he was bluffing or not.

Then he remembered Ruby telling him that if he got rid of Matthew and Lauren, he'd gain a ton of benefits. So he really wanted to see if Quentin truly didn't care about their lives.

"Fine! Since Mr. Robinson says so, I believe you. But my beef with the Walker family isn't over, so today I'll take her life!" Brent sneered, clapped his hands, and waved his knife as he walked towards Lauren.

Quentin kept sitting there, sipping his tea with a blank expression, but he watched Brent and Lauren out of the corner of his eye. He wanted to see if Brent had the guts to hurt Lauren.

Men could be pretty conflicted. Quentin clearly still cared about Lauren but wouldn't admit it.

Lauren looked at Brent calmly and said, "You can kill me, but you must let Matthew go. Otherwise, I'll get back at you."

Brent chuckled, "You're about to die, so stop talking nonsense."

Matthew saw that Quentin wasn't helping and shouted anxiously, "Quentin, save Mommy, or I'll hate you forever! You big jerk, don't you dare hurt my mommy!"

Matthew cried and cursed non-stop, making Quentin frown. He was waiting; as long as Lauren asked for help, he would step in without hesitation.

But Lauren was determined not to drag Quentin into this. She believed that if she really died here, Quentin would definitely save Matthew because they were blood-related!

Thinking of their blood ties, Lauren felt guilty looking at Quentin. If she hadn't distrusted him back then, she wouldn't have forced Jessica to sign a statement severing ties with Matthew. Now, the pain wasn't just Quentin's but also Matthew's.

Just as Brent raised his knife to stab Lauren, Quentin leaped up and kicked the knife out of Brent's hand.

Lauren heard a noise, seeing the knife on the ground and Brent in pain nearby.

"Quentin! What are you doing!" Brent glared at Quentin with fiery eyes.

Quentin lowered his leg, adjusted his black suit, and replied, "You ruined my engagement ceremony today, so I'm going to ruin your plans."

"You!" Brent glared at Quentin, wanting to pounce on him and tear him apart.

Quentin stood calmly to the side, responding coldly, "Stop wasting time and bring out the share transfer agreement you prepared. There's no need to be so angry. You just want my shares in the Robinson Conglomerate, right? We've known each other for decades, and I do feel some guilt towards you. So now that you've asked, I'll try to satisfy you."

Everyone present was shocked to hear Quentin say this. They hadn't expected Quentin to agree, especially given such an unconvincing reason.
