Chapter 417 Owing a Small Golden Statue

Lauren's eyes narrowed.

Did she hear that right? Did Quentin just tell her to shut up?

Was he siding with Odette?

With Quentin's words, Odette got even more cocky. She lifted her chin like she was looking down on Lauren, adopting a smug attitude.

"Quentin, you're so bad, helping me only now!"

Odette lightly tapped Quentin's chest with her fist.

He frowned but didn't push her away, seemingly tolerating her actions.

Lauren noticed Quentin's frown and suddenly remembered what Quentin had said before about playing along.

This must be one of those times, right?

Lauren speculated.

"What's wrong, Odette? Are you blaming Quentin for helping too late because you can't hold your own in a conversation?"

Lauren didn't take Odette's provocation seriously. She wanted to trust Quentin, at least for now.

Quentin said he was just playing along, so she should applaud his acting skills.

"You've got a silver tongue. When it comes to talking, I can't compete with you!" Odette retorted.

She implied that Lauren had climbed the ranks using her tongue, not her actual abilities. But Lauren didn't show any anger; instead, she smiled.

"Odette, did you go to Weitela for a few years and change your species? If you don't use your mouth to eat, do you use your eyes?" Lauren laughed.

She knew Odette was foolish, but she didn't expect her to be so slow to react.

Odette blinked, and after a moment, she finally understood what Lauren meant.

Odette's face turned bright red, her once delicate and cute features now scrunched up and somewhat ugly.

"Lauren!" Odette gritted her teeth as she said Lauren's name.

"What's wrong? Did I say something inappropriate?" Lauren asked.

She wasn't afraid of Odette's menacing demeanor.

This foolish woman wasn't worth fearing.

Besides, Quentin wasn't really on Odette's side.

Just knowing that made Lauren feel more confident, giving her the courage to stand up to Odette.

"Quentin! Look at Lauren!"

Seeing that Lauren wasn't afraid of her, Odette turned to Quentin and started to act pitiful.

She hoped Quentin would comfort her and then kick Lauren out, maybe even have her locked up.

Odette wanted Lauren to experience what she had gone through.

"Looks like you like relying on men. Are you just a man's accessory?" Lauren said.

"Aren't you afraid that when you get old, he will find a younger, prettier woman and replace you?"

"Lauren, shut up!" Odette growled.

Her demeanor suggested that Lauren had hit a sore spot.

Lauren's words were Odette's biggest fear.

And Lauren knew it well.

"Quentin, look at her!" Odette turned to Quentin again, squeezing out a couple of tears, looking pitiful.

"Settle down, Lauren." Quentin finally spoke.

He helped Odette once again.

Lauren gritted her teeth and continued to remind herself, 'Quentin is just playing along. I should trust him.'

"Did you hear that, Lauren? Quentin told you to settle down!" Odette was practically gloating.

"Seems like the one causing trouble is you, Odette." Lauren squinted, growing more and more annoyed with Odette.

"Causing trouble?" Odette raised an eyebrow, her exaggerated smile suggesting she had heard the funniest joke in the world.

"Lauren, a mistress causing trouble for the wife is causing trouble! The wife dealing with the mistress is only right!"

Lauren also smiled.

Odette was implying that Lauren was the mistress?

Although her relationship with Quentin had been rocky lately, it wasn't to the point where Odette could steal him away.

"Looks like you don't realize who the real partner is," Lauren said, her confidence evident.

Despite being slandered as a mistress by various people like Wendy and Sophia, Lauren held the position of the true partner in the end.

Lauren thought her words should wake Odette up, but Odette just sneered, her tone full of pride.

"You're the one who doesn't get it, Lauren! I already have Quentin's child. Do you think you can keep him?"

"Child?" Lauren was momentarily stunned, then remembered Wendy had also claimed to be pregnant, only to end up in jail.

Lauren knew she needed to stay calm and not believe Odette's words too quickly, especially since Quentin hadn't said anything yet.

At least they weren't married yet.

"Yes, Quentin and I are having a child. I don't know if it's a boy or a girl, but I'm sure Quentin will love them! Right, Quentin?"

Odette touched her stomach as if it were already noticeably swollen.

Odette made him feel even more nauseous. He knew that if Odette was pregnant, the child wasn't his.

He had no interest in being a stepfather.

Quentin nodded. Before Lauren could respond, Odette spoke again.

"Now do you understand, Lauren?" Odette's face was twisted with a sinister smile.

She had just said it casually, but Quentin confirmed it. Did this mean her status in Quentin's eyes had risen significantly?

Lauren gritted her teeth, her heart beginning to waver. She instinctively looked at Quentin.

His face was expressionless, but there seemed to be a flash of anger in his eyes.

"Just a child? Do you think Quentin would care?" Lauren's voice trembled.

Her heart was wavering intensely.

"We're getting married! This child is the product of our love."

Odette took Quentin's hand and placed it on her stomach.

Quentin frowned but silently tolerated Odette's actions.

Lauren saw this silent tolerance, and her heart completely wavered. She felt utterly ridiculous.

Loving Quentin made her a complete fool,

Giving her heart again and again, only to be hurt repeatedly.

The maids' words were true; Quentin was with Odette.

They were a perfect match, talented and beautiful!

Lauren tried to convince herself.

As if only by doing so, she could give herself a reason to let go, an excuse to stop loving Quentin.
