Chapter 226 A Conversation Between Two Men
Quentin looked very calm on the surface, comforting himself in his heart, 'I didn't care about Lauren at all, neither three years ago nor now, so I lacked the energy to care who she was with.'
"Well, congratulations! But Matthew is my son. If that's the case, please return him to me. your love is something Matthew can't bear," Quentin said disdainfully, looking at Ethan, though he knew how much anger he was suppressing.
Unexpectedly, Ethan burst into laughter again as he heard that.
"Mr. Robinson, you really like to steal the fruits of others' labor, don't you? Lauren raised Matthew all by herself. You haven't contributed any effort or money, yet you want to reap the benefits. What is Matthew to you? Is it just something you can take away?" Ethan said sarcastically.
Quentin finally couldn't hold back. He picked up his wine glass and smashed it on the ground. The bar was noisy, and the loud music and chatter drowned out the sound of the glass shattering, so no one noticed their commotion.
Seeing Quentin angry, Ethan naturally felt triumphant. He fetched another glass, filled it with wine, and handed it to Quentin.
After venting his anger, Quentin calmed down, "Mr. White, you're really interesting. Who's the one stealing the fruits of others' labor here? You like being Matthew's stepfather so much; it's certainly a unique hobby. I admire that."
Ethan's expression changed slightly. He put away his smile and looked seriously at Quentin, "Mr. Robinson, if you really care about Matthew, don't disturb our lives. We have been very happy as a family these past three years without you. Although Matthew knows who you are now, that doesn't give you the right to ruin our happy life. If you have any conscience left, stay far away from Lauren and Matthew, as far as possible."
"Don't be ridiculous, Ethan. Are you addicted to taking other people's wives and children? I don't care if you're with Lauren, but Matthew is my son. I won't allow you two to have him easily. Just wait, and I'll make sure to bless you both in my way."
Ethan didn't expect Quentin to be so cold-blooded. Quentin really didn't care about Matthew's feelings and might do something even more brutal.
"Quentin, are you really going to take Matthew away? I won't make you succeed. At worst, we'll both end up getting hurt," Ethan said, standing up excitedly.
Quentin smiled coldly and stood up as well, looking at Ethan coldly. "You? You're not qualified!"
With that, Quentin ignored Ethan's attempts to stop him and left the bar without looking back.
Ethan angrily kicked over the table, thinking, 'Damn it! Am I a smarty-pants this time? I feel a bit regretful. I shouldn't have been so smug in front of Quentin.'
However, Ethan thought that, though he had been friendly, as long as Quentin knew about him and Lauren, Quentin would still choose to take Matthew away. This way, they wouldn't have to hide and live in fear every day, afraid that Quentin would take Matthew. It was better to compete openly.
However, Lauren's future days would be tough. Ethan suddenly had a selfish thought, 'If Quentin really took Matthew away, it might not be a bad thing.'
Although Lauren were reluctant, she would accept it over time. Then he and Lauren could start a new without any obstacles, which would be good, too.
Ethan's mindset changed significantly, but Lauren was completely unaware. She held Matthew and rested peacefully, enjoying this happy moment.
The next day, Lauren took Matthew to visit Jessica as usual. Jessica lay in bed, smiling kindly.
"Lauren, thank you. Quentin told me everything yesterday," Jessica said gratefully, looking at Lauren.
Jessica's gratitude made Lauren feel even more ashamed.
Lauren said, "Grandma, I'm sorry. Seeing you so sad yesterday made me reflect on myself. I realized I was indeed too selfish, only telling you about this now. I'm truly sorry,"
Jessica shook her head. "Lauren, don't say sorry. I understand your difficulties. It must have been hard for you."
Lauren remarked, "No, Grandma. Actually, it wasn't until yesterday that I realized nothing is more important than Matthew's happiness. Everything I hoped for and worked for was for Matthew. Seeing him so happy and having so much fun yesterday was enough."
A mother's love was so great that it made Lauren forget the pain she had once suffered.
Jessica looked at Lauren's serene face and felt somewhat comforted.
Jessica said, "Lauren, you've really matured and grown up. You're no longer the girl who was troubled by love three years ago."
Lauren felt a surge of emotion, wanting to cry. Her maturity wasn't just due to the passage of time but also to the hardships she had endured over the past three years.
Lauren said, "Grandma, you're flattering me again."
Jessica smiled kindly, "Lauren, don't worry. Your hard days are over. Matthew has grown up, so you don't have to work so hard anymore."
Lauren nodded, "Yes, I guess I've finally come through the hard times."
While Lauren and Jessica chatted in the room, Matthew got bored and slipped out. He found George and used his phone to call Quentin.
When Quentin saw George's number calling, he was startled, thinking something had happened to Jessica. He immediately answered the phone, only to find it was Matthew.
"Daddy, I'm at Mrs. Jessica Robinson's place. Can you come and play with me?" Matthew said happily.
Quentin breathed a sigh of relief, but his tone was cold, "I'm busy. Call your Uncle Ethan."
"But, Daddy, I want to play with you," Matthew said, pouting. He didn't understand why Quentin was rejecting him.
However, Quentin was still angry, "Matthew, remember. Don't use George's phone to call me again, or I won't talk to you anymore."
Perhaps Quentin's tone was too harsh, and Matthew felt extremely sad. Tears rolled down his cheeks like broken beads.
Matthew said, "I understand, Daddy."
Quentin could hear Matthew's disappointment and sadness, but he hardened his heart and ignored it.
He continued coldly, "I have work to do. That's it. Play by yourself."
Without waiting for Matthew's response, Quentin ended the call immediately. Matthew stood there, feeling full of grievance and disappointment.
Seeing Matthew cry, George quickly comforted him, "Matthew, don't be sad. Your dad is probably really busy with work. He manages such a big company; it's very hard for him."
Hearing George's words, Matthew's interest was piqued, "George, is my dad's company really big? Is he that amazing?"
George smiled warmly, "Of course. Mr. Robinson is a very famous and successful person in City A. He's very capable."
Matthew asked, "Really? George, can you tell me more about my dad?"
Lauren and Kimberly never talked about Quentin, so it was no wonder Matthew was so eager to know about him.
