Chapter 58 Misunderstandings of That Night
Lauren may not have known Quentin well before, but after two years of marriage and recent interactions, she had come to understand his dominance and pride to some extent.
She hadn't expected Quentin to actually apologize to her and was momentarily at a loss.
"Right, what the doctor just said is true. Now that you're carrying my child, I should take responsibility for both of you. Lauren, maybe we can give it a try," Quentin continued.
Why couldn't they fall in love after getting married? Quentin had always entertained the idea of trying it out with Lauren, but his pride had gotten in the way.
Quentin's ‘give it a try’ caused a stir in Lauren's heart. After all her efforts, she finally seemed to have caught his attention.
But she hesitated again because she wasn't sure if Quentin was doing this because of the child or because he genuinely cared for her.
Lauren began to let down her guard about what had happened the night before. After all, Quentin was the father of the child growing inside her, and she decided to give it another shot.
Quentin patiently waited for Lauren's response, giving someone time to think for the first time in years.
"I want to think about it more," said Lauren after a long consideration, not wanting to make a hasty decision just for momentary satisfaction. Especially since she and her child had just gotten out of a dangerous situation, she didn't want to rush into another decision.
"Okay, I respect that," Quentin replied, unruffled. He was confident that Lauren would eventually be unable to escape his grasp.
Quentin continued with his work when his phone began to ring. Seeing it was Hannah, he frowned.
Such news couldn't be kept secret, so Quentin fabricated a reason for Lauren's sudden hospitalization, and as he expected, after a barrage of scolding from Hannah, she hurried to the hospital.
Seeing Quentin all disgruntled, Lauren felt a surge of satisfaction. It was a relief to have Hannah taking her side. The atmosphere between the two of them eased significantly.
Over the next few days, Quentin transformed into the proverbial perfect gentleman. He took meticulous care of Lauren in the hospital, where she lived like royalty—every need catered for, every whim indulged, and most importantly, with her beloved by her side.
Hannah was overjoyed to see how they interacted with each other. It seemed like Lauren's misfortune had turned into a blessing in disguise!
Since Quentin was there to look after her, Hannah decided to give the young couple some space and refrained from visiting the hospital as often.
Before they knew it, a week had passed, and Lauren was getting restless. Furthermore, after the previous day's examination results, Dr. Olivia informed them that Lauren had almost fully recovered. Thus, they planned to discharge her today.
"Lauren, and Mr. Robinson," Dr. Olivia began with a touch of nagging affection, "make sure you follow all the instructions I gave you. I don't want to see you two outside of the regular prenatal checkups, alright? I wish you both happiness!" Dr. Olivia gave Quentin a meaningful look.
Lauren was truly grateful to Dr. Olivia, knowing that she had their best interests at heart.
"Thank you, Dr. Olivia."
With a smile and a wave, Dr. Olivia said her goodbyes. Quentin stood attentively by Lauren's left side, then escorted her to the car.
Aware that Lauren was being discharged today, Hannah had arranged for a chef to prepare a sumptuous meal to welcome them home.
Quentin and Lauren's return to the Robinson Estate was for packing up since Quentin believed it was time for Lauren to return to The Robinson Family Villa, where she truly belonged as the lady of the house.
Lauren agreed. Each day, Lady Dowager took care of her, and the thought weighed on her conscience.
Witnessing Quentin and Lauren walk shoulder to shoulder through the door, Hannah's smile was irrepressible.
"Lauren, you're back, and I bet you're starving. The meal will be ready shortly."
Like a little bird, Lauren flitted to Hannah's side. "Lady Dowager, I'm not tired. Why did you come out to wait for us? It's windy outside—let's hurry inside."
Taking Lauren's hand, Hannah responded, "Oh, I just wanted to see you two as soon as possible. Come on, let's go home for dinner."
It was always the same reason, and Hannah never changed. It was something Lauren found endearingly exasperating, but they laughed and chatted as they entered the house together.
When Hannah got home, she pulled Lauren back to her room to have her lie down and rest. Lauren couldn't resist Hannah's insistence and complied.
"The meal won't be ready for a while, so just lay here and rest a bit, and we can chat," Hannah said.
"Dowager, I'm really not tired. How about I sit up and talk with you instead?"
Hannah nodded with a smile and then got to the heart of the matter.
"Lauren, I've noticed that you and Quentin have been getting along splendidly these past few days. Tell me the truth, have you shared all your doubts with Quentin? There's no longer any distance between you two, right?"
At this, Lauren shook her head despondently. After what had happened that night, how could she have the peace of mind to address the troubles in her heart?
"You haven't talked it out? But I asked Quentin to explain everything to you the night of the incident. He didn't clarify things with you?" Hannah asked, surprised.
She had observed Quentin and Lauren's affection and thought they had resolved their past issues. Even though Lauren had been hospitalized unexpectedly, Hannah hadn't overthought it.
"What?" With Hannah's words, Lauren had a sudden revelation. She hadn't realized that Quentin had come to her that day to clear up misunderstandings; she thought he came to discuss divorce... She had misjudged him...
"That darn kid, now he's even deceiving me! I'll have to set him straight. Lauren, don't be mad at him. Maybe he couldn't find the right moment to explain things because you were unwell. Why don't you find a suitable opportunity to talk to him? He'll surely tell you the truth."
"Dowager, I ..."
"Lauren, Quentin has just been spoiled by me. You know his parents passed away early, and he has always been with me; I'm his only kin, so of course I spoil him. That's why he can be quite reserved. But he's not a bad person at heart, and he's as kind as you are. I hope you can be understanding toward him and patiently guide him. With your help, I'm sure he will mature even faster," Hannah said with emotion.
Every time she thought of Quentin's upbringing, it pained her heart. Hannah had overcome the devastating loss of her son and daughter-in-law, and the major reason she endured was Quentin. She didn't want him to grow up in this world as an orphan. Fortunately, Quentin had made something of himself, becoming CEO of the Robinson Conglomerate in his teens and creating his own legend.
Lauren was moved. She knew Hannah had shouldered a lot behind the scenes for Quentin, and that's why she had respected Hannah as if she were her own grandmother for so long.
"Dowager, I'll listen to you and believe in you. I'll find the right moment to have a proper talk with Quentin," Lauren said resolutely.
"My dear, you've had it tough. Both of you are my good kids; I'm sure you'll find happiness," Hannah said, wrapping her arms around Lauren with a tender heart.
