Chapter 316 The Negotiation of Feigned Civility
Sophia's feelings for Quentin had gone from love to straight-up hatred. Just thinking about it made her face twist with anger.
She swore to herself, "I'm gonna pay him back double for the humiliation today!"
Ruby saw Quentin rush out the main door and quickly ran to the lounge, only to find Sophia in tears.
"Sophia, what's going on? I just saw Quentin leave. The engagement ceremony isn't even over yet. Where's he going?" Ruby asked.
Sophia sneered, "He never cared about me. He just found an excuse to dodge the engagement."
"Don't be ridiculous. He looked really worried. Maybe something serious came up. Don't stress; once he sorts it out, he'll come back to get engaged to you," Ruby replied, trying to comfort Sophia.
Sophia gave a bitter smile and snapped, "He said his son was in trouble. That woman just left, and now something happens to the kid? What a coincidence! I hope they all die. I wish they would all just die together!"
Ruby's face went pale at Sophia's words. Her eyes darted around, avoiding Sophia's gaze.
"Sophia, don't say stuff like that. If someone hears and it gets back to Quentin, what will he think of you? We've worked so hard to get here; we can't mess it up now!" Ruby said, trying to calm her down.
Sophia, always sharp, noticed Ruby's guilty look. She asked suspiciously, "Mom, do you know something about this? Did you have anything to do with what happened to Matthew?"
Ruby quickly shook her head. "No way! Why would I do something so stupid on your engagement day? If I were to do something, I'd pick another day, after you were really married, then maybe..."
"Mom, what do you mean? Don't hide anything from me. If you did this, I need to know!" Sophia glared at Ruby.
Sophia knew Ruby too well. Calling her ruthless might be a stretch, but Ruby was definitely willing to go to great lengths. She feared Ruby might do something foolish that would ruin everything.
Ruby, scared by Sophia's firm attitude, had to spill the beans.
"I found out that Lauren got mixed up with a mafia gang called the Obsidian Gang, so I secretly contacted them, hoping to use them to get rid of Lauren and Matthew. I promised them a big payout once you became Quentin's wife. But I didn't expect them to act today," Ruby started crying. If she had known it would turn out like this, she would never have gotten involved with them.
Sophia was livid. "Mom, how could you be so stupid? How dare you mess with the mafia? Can you really trust them? No wonder there were some unfamiliar guys among today's guests; they must be from the Obsidian Gang."
Sophia was so angry she could hardly breathe. "The Obsidian Gang's leader has a huge grudge against Quentin. How could you think this was a good idea? What if it fails? Have you thought about what would happen to us?"
"No, it won't fail. Matthew's in their hands. How hard could it be for them to kill him? Besides, they shouldn't betray me," Ruby said, though regret was written all over her face. She realized too late that the mafia had only been using her to get to Quentin.
Sophia ripped off her headpiece and threw it to the ground in anger. "We can only hope the Obsidian Gang pulls it off!"
Quentin sped his red Ferrari straight to the Obsidian Gang's hideout. Even though he came alone like last time, this time was different. Previously, he had some leverage to negotiate with Brent, but now, his chances were slim. So, he made some preparations before coming.
Stepping out of the car, he was searched by the gang members before being allowed in.
Inside, Lauren heard the commotion and her heart raced. She didn't expect Quentin to actually come. A strange sense of anticipation filled her, as if she were waiting for a hero to save her and Matthew from danger.
Even though she was worried about whether Quentin could handle Brent this time, she had an inexplicable trust in him. She believed Quentin could save them and that he had the ability to resolve everything.
Lauren felt conflicted, wanting to see Quentin but also fearing to face him. She couldn't help but look towards the door, feeling that Quentin would appear any moment.
Just as she was eagerly waiting, Quentin, dressed in a black suit and black leather shoes, walked in with large strides.
He immediately noticed Lauren tied to a chair and Matthew with his hands bound by ropes. His eyes flickered for a moment before he turned his attention to Brent, sitting coldly across from him.
"Who would've thought Mr. Reynolds would resort to kidnapping? People would laugh if they heard about this," Quentin said disdainfully, downing the tea on the table in one gulp.
Brent smiled and knocked the cup out of Quentin's hand, mocking, "I didn't invite Mr. Robinson here as a guest today. Please show the proper attitude of someone being coerced."
Quentin shrugged nonchalantly. "Well, these two have a close relationship with me. One is my ex-wife, and the other is my estranged son. What does Mr. Reynolds want from me today? Are you trying to help us reconcile?"
Brent didn't expect Quentin to have this attitude. He knew Quentin well enough to realize he shouldn't underestimate him.. "If Mr. Robinson wants to play dumb, I'll play along. But I've already calculated the time. If I don't get what I want, I'll send this lady and this little boy to meet their maker. Mr. Robinson, don't waste my time."
With a mysterious smile on his face, Quentin squinted his eyes. He stared at Brent silently, planning something in his mind.
Lauren was on pins and needles. She knew Brent wouldn't easily let her and Matthew go, but she had no idea what he wanted from Quentin.
Quentin then spoke, "Do you really think I would sacrifice my interests for these two who abandoned me?"
Brent smiled meaningfully. "What else? Mr. Robinson, you left your engagement ceremony to come here, which shows their importance to you. Stop pretending. Let's be straightforward."
Quentin clapped his hands as he continued, "Tell me your demands. Let me see what remarkable demands the leader of the Obsidian Gang can make."
