Chapter 399 Gaining Trust
Matthew blinked, taking a long time to seem to understand what Gregory, who looked a lot like Quentin, had just said.
He frowned and showed Gregory an unfriendly expression. "Don't you dare slander my Daddy! Even if you're Mr. Walker!"
Gregory shrugged helplessly. He was just stating the truth, even though that truth was something he had fabricated out of thin air.
"You jerk! If you keep talking about my Daddy like that, I'll hit you!" Matthew waved his little fists, threatening to hit Gregory, but was stopped by a stern shout from Lauren. "Matthew! No hitting!"
"Mommy?" Matthew was a bit scared, and his waving fists dropped to his sides.
"Gregory is right." Lauren gently pushed away Kimberly, who was supporting her, and tried to stand firm. "Matthew, remember, your father, Quentin, really wants to kill us."
"Mommy." Matthew's eyes widened in disbelief. "Why are you saying such things? Did Daddy make you mad? Let's go back and find him, okay? I'll help you beat him up."
"Matthew!" Lauren shouted, and with her voice came the tears she had been holding back. "I won't allow you to call Quentin Daddy anymore. That man doesn't deserve to be your father!"
"Lauren, isn't that a bit too much? Quentin is still Matthew's father. Saying that could be bad for Matthew's psychological growth, don't you think?" Gregory asked.
Of course, he wasn't really concerned about Matthew's psychological state. If he could, he would have gotten rid of Matthew already. After all, a mother who has lost her child was easier to conquer.
But he couldn't. Matthew still had value, which was one of the reasons Gregory hadn't made a move against him yet.
Based on Quentin's leniency towards his own family, it was clear that Quentin wasn't a ruthless person, at least not towards his relatives.
Gregory intended to use this, to threaten Quentin with Matthew if necessary.
"No, it won't." Lauren had made up her mind. She wanted Matthew to clearly understand how cruel the Quentin he once admired and idolized really was.
"If I don't tell him now, the blow will be even greater when he finds out later." Lauren's tone was calm.
Time was a magical thing. It could make someone or something seem perfect in one's imagination, and it could also make people forget everything.
Lauren had deeply experienced the former. During the years she had a crush on Quentin, she had imagined him to be so wonderful, but reality was much harsher than her imagination.
Rather than letting Matthew realize later how awful his father was, it was better to let him know now.
Lauren firmly believed that time would heal everything, but she forgot that after all these years, her love for Quentin hadn't faded at all.
"Matthew, I need to tell you something now. You can be upset, but don't think I'm joking with you." Lauren said.
"Mommy." Matthew had somewhat guessed what Lauren was going to say. He lowered his head, wanting to cover his ears.
"Lauren, let me do it?" Gregory stopped Matthew's hand. "This kind of thing is easier to explain between men, right?"
Gregory's words resonated with Matthew. Little boys liked it when adults treated them as mature men.
Without waiting for Lauren's consent, Gregory put on a serious expression and said to Matthew, "Matthew, there's a truth you must accept now, and that is your father wants to kill you. Although it's cruel to you at first, I have enough evidence to tell you that the person who just blew up your grandma's shop was your father."
"Impossible!" Matthew shouted.
Quentin was his idol; he didn't want to believe this "truth"!
"If you don't believe me, I can show you the video, the same one your mommy and grandma just watched," Gregory said.
After watching the video, Matthew finally believed it. He needed some time to process it, so he squatted in a corner, feeling depressed.
"Thank you, Gregory," Lauren said gratefully.
To her, Gregory was like a beacon in the dark night.
If it weren't for Gregory, she might still be deceived by Quentin and wouldn't have been able to escape with Kimberly and Matthew in time.
"It's okay." Gregory smiled slightly, then after thinking for a moment, he said to Lauren, "Can I go abroad with you?"
"Why?" Lauren was a bit puzzled.
"I want to be with you," Gregory said softly, his eyes gentle, filled with deep affection.
He held Lauren's hand, as gently as if he were handling a fragile treasure. "Will you give me this chance?"
Lauren was startled by Gregory's sudden confession. She had just been betrayed, and Gregory was confessing at this time?
Didn't he know that women at this time usually weren't in the mood to start a new relationship?
Although she hadn't planned to agree anyway.
Of course, Gregory knew, but he had no intention of pursuing Lauren. All of this was to make Lauren believe he liked her.
As long as Lauren believed that, it was enough. Gregory would gain Lauren's unconditional trust.
"She doesn't want to." Quentin's cold voice came from behind Lauren, with a noticeable anger that made everyone except Gregory feel a chill down their spine.
"Mr. Robinson, is this really necessary?" Gregory laughed. He hadn't expected Quentin to arrive so quickly, but he wasn't panicking.
"That's a question for you, Gregory," Quentin's gaze swept over Gregory. "Do you really like other people's wives so much?"
"Mr. Robinson, you're exaggerating. I'm only interested in Lauren," Gregory said with his signature smile. He was indeed only interested in Lauren because she was Quentin's wife.
"Lauren is so charming, yet some people just don't know how to cherish her. I feel sorry for her." Gregory said.
"Mr. Walker, you still have the heart to feel sorry for Lauren? Why don't you think about how to deal with the falling stock prices of the Cloud Group!" Quentin's tone was very unfriendly.
Once his bottom line was crossed, even if Gregory was his own brother, Quentin wouldn't treat him like an ordinary person.
"What's wrong with the Cloud Group?" Lauren frowned. She didn't know the truth of the matter, but from Quentin's words, she mistakenly thought Quentin was sabotaging the Cloud Group to get back at Gregory.
Lauren's concern made Quentin even angrier.
Lauren was actually worried about Gregory?
Quentin snorted disdainfully and said with a cold smile, "What? Are you concerned about the Cloud Group?"
When the Robinson Conglomerate was under attack, Lauren hadn't shown such agitation. Clearly, Gregory was here to seduce Lauren.
Quentin hadn't noticed how anxious Lauren had been when the Robinson Conglomerate was under attack.
