Chapter 414 Unusual
After breakfast, she didn't head to the study to read like she usually did. Instead, she decided to go up to the rooftop terrace to enjoy the view.
Unexpectedly, she overheard a conversation:
"Oh my God! I really wanna quit!" The blonde maid, who had been giving her a hard time all morning, stretched and complained loudly.
"Shh! Keep it down! What if Miss. Walker hears you?" The other maid, who wore glasses, made a shushing gesture.
The blonde maid waved her hand dismissively. "What are you worried about? She should be reading on the second floor right now! No way she'd come up to the rooftop."
"Good point."
The maid with glasses sighed in relief and started to vent, too. "Honestly, I wanna quit too. Just seeing her face every day makes me wanna puke! Does she have to be so gross?"
"Exactly! She's just a mistress, but she acts like she's some high-class lady! Makes me wanna punch her!"
The blonde maid said, waving her fist in the air as if Lauren were molecules floating around.
"Alright, let's get back to work! Watch out for that snitch!" The maid with glasses said.
The blonde maid laughed.
The two maids joked around and walked in the opposite direction from where Lauren was.
Lauren's fists had clenched at some point, her nails digging into her skin, and tears welled up in her eyes.
She didn't know what she had done wrong or why she was being called a mistress. Whose mistress was she supposed to be?
What had happened in the outside world these past few days?
Lauren tried to turn on her computer, but there was still no internet signal. She had been deliberately isolated from the world.
Was it Quentin?
Lauren couldn't help but think of the man she hadn't seen in a long time, even though she knew he came by every night to touch her face or kiss her lips, only to disappear by morning.
If Quentin was the one isolating her, what was he trying to hide from the outside world?
For instance, his relationship with Odette?
But Lauren couldn't understand why Quentin would hide his relationship with Odette from her.
Was there something else going on, or was he just trying to mess with her?
The first thing Quentin did after shaking off the reporters was call Gregory.
He felt it was necessary to talk with Gregory.
"Looks like you've got a lot of free time."
As soon as the call connected, Quentin spoke, his tone cold enough to freeze Gregory on the other end.
"Compared to you, Mr. Robinson, I'm a free man," Gregory replied.
He was indeed free, free enough to create those fake, attention-grabbing news stories.
"I wouldn't mind finding something for you to do, like hard labor in prison. That would suit you well." Quentin suggested.
"Sounds terrifying." Gregory laughed, his tone calm and composed, contrary to his words.
"If you keep publishing this nonsense, you'll experience it firsthand." Quentin threatened.
"Mr. Robinson, you're quite the joker. Wasn't it you who told me to wait and see?" Gregory laughed.
"Looks like you need a pair of handcuffs and a prison uniform." Quentin frowned. He hadn't forgotten his warning to Gregory a few days ago, but he hadn't expected Gregory to use his own words against him.
But Gregory could only rely on his verbal skills to deal with him.
"It seems Mr. Robinson has forgotten whose hands Matthew and Kimberly are in." Gregory showed no fear of Quentin's words. He had enough leverage to counter-threaten Quentin.
Quentin's frown deepened. Gregory had indeed taken Matthew and Kimberly to control him!
"Looks like you overestimate their importance," Quentin said.
He couldn't let Gregory have any leverage over him, and the best way was to pretend he didn't care about Matthew and Kimberly.
"I don't think so," Gregory replied calmly. No one knew Quentin better than he did. Quentin wasn't a cold-blooded, heartless person.
He had once planned to publicly reveal his identity, which showed how much family meant to him.
And Matthew was Quentin's biological son. Gregory didn't believe Matthew's importance to Quentin was low.
Quentin didn't respond, waiting for Gregory's next words. He was currently at a disadvantage and needed to stay calm to turn the tables.
"How about this? I spent a lot of money on some drugs. Since Mr. Robinson doesn't care about Matthew, why not let Matthew try them? What do you think, Mr. Robinson?" Gregory said deliberately.
He wanted to push Quentin to the brink. He wanted to see how Quentin would remain calm when Matthew was about to be forcibly injected with those drugs.
"Do as you please, if you have the guts," Quentin said.
His tone remained strong, but he had already formulated a plan, and the first step was to compromise.
Compromise with Gregory.
He had to agree to Gregory's demands, as long as they weren't too excessive, so he could rescue Matthew and Kimberly.
"Is Mr. Robinson acknowledging Matthew's importance?" Gregory picked up on Quentin's meaning.
Quentin's silence seemed to indicate agreement, and he reminded himself that as long as the demands weren't too excessive, he could endure temporarily to save Matthew.
Gregory was silent for a while, seemingly thinking, then he spoke. "How about this! Marry Odette. What do you think, Mr. Robinson?"
Quentin had once thought marriage was a contract that abandoned freedom, that the marriage certificate was a declaration of the loss of freedom, and the ring was a shackle on life.
But Lauren had made him understand that marriage was beautiful and sacred.
If there was someone in this life who could capture his heart, it could only be Lauren.
No one else but Lauren.
Just the thought of walking into the sacred marriage hall with Odette made Quentin feel inevitably nauseous.
He instinctively wanted to refuse, but reason forced him to agree.
It was just a charade. As soon as he rescued Matthew and Kimberly, he would immediately ditch Odette!
Quentin didn't know how to tell Lauren about this.
After all, it was a special time. If Lauren misunderstood him again, he wouldn't be able to explain in time for the plan to proceed smoothly. So, he would hide it for as long as he could.
Fortunately, he had already shut down all electronic devices and the internet in the villa.
"I thought you would refuse," Gregory said. He truly hadn't expected Quentin to agree to such a demand.
Did Matthew's importance surpass Lauren's in his heart?
The answer was, of course, no. Matthew and Lauren were equally important.
If Quentin had to choose who was more important, he would choose Lauren without hesitation.
Unfortunately, Gregory didn't know that.
Gregory was suspicious but didn't say much. He was too pleased with Quentin's yield to care.
He couldn't wait to see Lauren's reaction when she found out Quentin was going to marry Odette.
That reaction would be very interesting.
