Chapter 125 Speaking the Truth
Lauren felt genuinely guilty about the spokesperson issue, as her actions had implicated the entire company.
Wendy's pregnancy was a lie. Lauren even suspected that Wendy's claim of being used by Quentin might also be false.
However, Lauren was now very uneasy, unsure if Quentin's feelings were genuine.
Fortunately, Quentin had stopped the conversation in a timely manner. Otherwise, she truly wouldn't have known how to respond to Noah's question.
Of course, Noah was unaware that Lauren's distress was not just because of her divorce from Quentin but due to Wendy's meddling. Thus, Noah didn't understand Lauren's pain and struggle. He only wanted to use this situation to help them reconcile.
"It's not that I want to rush you, Quentin. The people at the company are eager for you to make an appearance. You're still injured, and if people find out about your injury, the situation could become even more complicated," Noah said worriedly, though he exaggerated the dire state of Robinson Conglomerate on purpose.
Quentin knew Noah was lying, but Lauren, who was not familiar with the situation at Robinson Conglomerate, fell for it. She blamed herself, thinking she caused all these difficulties.
Since that was the case, she felt obligated to help Quentin deal with everything.
"Mr. Martin, what do you think I should do to minimize the impact on the company?" Lauren asked Noah seriously.
Noah smiled triumphantly. "As long as you complete the unfinished endorsement, silencing the gossip, I think everything will be okay."
"You mean I should act as Mrs. Robinson for the endorsement?" Lauren hesitated. "But we are already divorced."
"Being divorced doesn't matter. What matters is making others believe you haven't divorced to stabilize Robinson Conglomerate's stock. Lauren, haven't you forgiven Quentin yet? They say a hero saves a beauty. The only way to repay is to marry him. Quentin has saved you many times. Logically, that should be enough for you to marry him many times over," Noah pressured Lauren, forcing her to decide at this moment.
Noah's words made sense, but gratitude and forgiveness were two different things. Lauren still had concerns and couldn't make up her mind.
Quentin saw Noah's aggressive stance and didn't want Lauren to feel pressured, fearing it might scare her away.
"Alright, Noah, you've said too much today. I'll handle the company's matters. It would help if you went back," Quentin said.
Although he knew Noah was doing this to push them to remarry, using the company to pressure Lauren was not what he wanted.
Noah shrugged. Since Quentin didn't want to push Lauren too hard, he respected their choice.
After Noah left, Lauren felt heavy-hearted. 'Am I a jinx to Quentin?'
First, she took away his marriage, then caused him to get injured repeatedly for her, and now even the company's development was affected by her.
"What do you think?" Quentin asked proactively, not wanting to keep things bottled up.
Their misunderstandings over this period were due to this very reason.
Some things left unsaid only pile up and make matters worse.
Lauren didn't know how to express her current thoughts, smiling bitterly, "I haven't decided yet. Can you give me a little more time?"
"Noah isn't trying to force you. If you don't want to do it, no one will make you. You can tell me whatever you're thinking," Quentin stared intently at Lauren, trying to see through her heart.
"I understand," Lauren replied in a flat tone, but she was still full of displeasure.
The day passed dully. Quentin sensed that Lauren's concerns were still about the incident with Wendy, so he decided to reveal the truth.
The next day, Quentin had Cecilia bring the evidence he had previously collected about Wendy's fake pregnancy to the hospital room. Initially, Quentin had been reluctant to reveal Wendy's deeds, considering her resemblance to his first love and their years of friendship.
But now Quentin had seen through Wendy's character and felt no need to maintain her good image. However, he doesn't realize that Ethan has already told Lauren the truth about Wendy's fake pregnancy.
Lauren, as usual, brought breakfast to the hospital room early in the morning. Quentin immediately called her over and handed her the documents.
Lauren skimmed through the documents, her expression unchanged, which puzzled Quentin.
'Can it be that this isn't what she cares about? Why is her attitude so indifferent? Has she stopped liking me?' Quentin thought.
"Lauren, I should have told you about this earlier, but I had my reasons," Quentin carefully observed Lauren's expression, hoping to catch a reaction, but he was ultimately disappointed.
"It's okay. I can understand Wendy did it out of love for you." Lauren smiled faintly.
Her smile, however, annoyed Quentin. What did she mean by 'understand'? Shouldn't a normal woman be jealous and angry upon hearing such a thing?
"Lauren, what exactly are you thinking? Let's lay everything out today. I can't guess your thoughts, nor do I have the means to." Quentin grabbed Lauren's shoulders forcefully, making her face him.
Lauren panicked, worried that Quentin's wound might reopen.
"Let go of me. Your wound will split open."
"I don't care. I want a clear answer from you." Quentin was relentless. Even if his wound bled, it was less important than getting an answer.
Lauren felt helpless and conceded.
"Fine, let go. What I'm worried about is the endorsement issue. Are you using me?" Lauren looked at Quentin seriously.
Quentin found Lauren's question even more perplexing. "Using you? When have I ever used you?"
Since they had come this far, there was no need to hide anything.
Lauren took a deep breath and mustered the courage to say, "Wendy is always the spokesperson for that product. Why am I suddenly chosen? Isn't it because you wanted to use my identity as Mrs. Robinson for publicity?"
Quentin turned serious. Indeed, when Noah and he discussed the matter, he intended to create a buzz. But his more important goal was to let everyone know she was his wife.
At that time, Quentin was already worried that Ethan might take Lauren away. Even without Ethan, there might be other men in the future. He just wanted the whole world to know that Lauren was his. No one could take her away.
He hadn't expected things to develop so unpredictably, nor that Lauren would misunderstand.
However, such a complex issue didn't seem like something other than what Lauren would come up with on her own. Could someone around her be deliberately sabotaging their relationship?
