Chapter 411 True Feelings and False Intentions
Gregory waited on the other end of the phone, feeling like an eternity had passed, but Lauren still hadn't responded.
He started to worry that his plan might have been exposed.
Or maybe Quentin was right there with her.
Before Gregory could say anything, Lauren finally spoke, her voice trembling with tears.
"Okay, I get it."
"I'll send you the address. Come quickly," Gregory sighed in relief. "Or should I come pick you up?"
"I'll come on my own. You stay with Matthew; he must be terrified," Lauren said, crying.
Matthew was such a brave boy. She knew that even if he didn't show it, he must be scared inside.
But how could such a strong child ever show it?
After hanging up, Gregory sent her the location: City A Central Hospital.
It wasn't too far from Lauren's villa, just about an hour's drive.
Lauren wiped away her tears, cursing herself for being so negligent.
Matthew had been running a high fever for three days, and she only found out today!
She had to get to Matthew as soon as possible.
But all the windows in the villa were welded shut, and the only place to contact the outside world was the balcony on the top floor, which was too high to reach.
Lauren's gaze shifted to the glass window.
If she couldn't use the balcony, she could climb out the window!
Lauren ran downstairs, grabbed a chair, and swung it at the window.
She had confirmed the villa's location from the balcony before; it was usually deserted, so she wasn't worried about hurting anyone.
After a quick cleanup, Lauren started working on the security bars. She needed a wrench, or maybe she could just smash them with the chair?
Lauren didn't have the patience to look for a wrench, so she chose the latter.
In her frantic state, she didn't realize she was about to fall into a trap set by Gregory.
"Where do you think you're going?"
The cold voice was filled with impatience.
Lauren sneered inwardly. Did she need to report her whereabouts to him?
"Does it matter to you?"
Quentin frowned.
Why had Lauren been acting like this lately? He hadn't done anything wrong.
"If you have nothing more to say, I'll be leaving now," Lauren said, heading for the door behind Quentin.
She noticed it wasn't locked.
If the door wasn't locked, she didn't need to waste time on the security bars.
"Stop!"
Quentin's command made Lauren pause again.
She was getting impatient. She needed to get to the hospital, but this man kept delaying her!
"What do you want, Mr. Robinson?"
"I'm just here to warn you that Gregory is trying to harm you and Matthew," Quentin said, his frown deepening. He could hear the impatience in Lauren's voice.
Did Lauren hate him so much that she couldn't stand to talk to him for even a moment?
"Gregory is trying to harm me?" Lauren repeated, her tone full of doubt.
"Felix just found out," Quentin said honestly.
"Quentin, have you said enough?" Lauren asked, her eyes filled with a distance Quentin rarely saw.
"I'm curious why you dislike Gregory so much. Do you know how much he's helped me?"
"Helped you?" Quentin found Lauren's words laughable.
He knew exactly what kind of person Gregory was.
He was a self-serving opportunist, a thoroughgoing profit-seeker. The only reason he would help Lauren was to use her for his gain.
And Quentin's good intentions were being completely misunderstood by Lauren.
"Lauren, I wish I could crack open your head and see if there's anything inside," Quentin said. "Gregory is deceiving you. Can't you see that?"
"Gregory is deceiving me? Quentin, what right do you have to say that?" Lauren was genuinely angry now.
"Quentin, let me make it clear. When I needed help the most, the person who was there for me was Gregory, not you!"
"So, you don't believe me?" Quentin narrowed his eyes. He had never been this angry before.
He was telling the truth, but he couldn't understand why Lauren was so foolish, so unwilling to trust him!
"I have no obligation to believe you," Lauren said coldly. Seeing Quentin's lack of response, she continued.
"Quentin, stop treating me like a fool, okay? I'm not stupid. I've just been pretending for the sake of loving you, but there's no need for that anymore."
Her words deeply wounded Quentin.
Quentin understood the meaning behind Lauren's words. He hadn't expected her to be so heartless.
He took a deep breath and said heavily.
"You'll understand. I'll make you understand."
Lauren laughed. "I'll be watching."
With that, Lauren made to leave. She hadn't forgotten that Matthew was waiting for her at the hospital.
Even if Quentin was telling the truth, she wanted to go to the hospital.
She couldn't be sure if her precious child was healthy or sick.
Just as Lauren was about to walk out, Quentin grabbed her back.
Quentin's grip on her wrist was so tight it felt like he was going to crush her bones.
Lauren knew that if Quentin let go, the spot he had grabbed would be red.
But right now, Lauren didn't have the time to check.
"Quentin, let go of me!"
"You're not going," Quentin's tone was unyielding. If he could, he would have knocked Lauren out with a punch.
How could she be so foolish? He had already told her Gregory was deceiving her, yet she wanted to go? Did she want to stay by Gregory's side that badly?
Even if it meant being used?
Thinking about this, Quentin's mood plummeted.
"Quentin, what do you want?" Lauren finally shouted, her tears and voice coming out together, making Quentin's heart ache.
"Do you even understand the situation? Matthew has a fever of 104 degrees and is in the emergency room at the hospital!"
"What did you say?" Quentin's reaction was the same as Lauren's, but he quickly calmed down and asked seriously.
"Gregory told you this?"
"Who else?" Lauren replied with a cold laugh. "Gregory is at the hospital with Matthew. I need to go be with Matthew."
As soon as Lauren said this, Quentin understood.
Matthew didn't have a fever. This was all Gregory's ploy to lure Lauren to the hospital.
He was using Lauren's concern for Matthew to get her to come to him.
And Lauren, this foolish girl, was being used and didn't even realize it!
But Quentin also understood Lauren.
As a mother, it was normal for her to worry about her child. And Gregory had said Matthew was sick.
If Gregory had said he was sick, Lauren wouldn't have gone.
