Chapter 412 Imprisoned Again
"I'll take care of the Matthew situation," Quentin reassured Lauren.
From their earlier conversation, Quentin knew that Gregory had earned Lauren's trust.
He was smart enough to realize that if he kept insisting Gregory was deceiving her, he would only push Lauren further away.
Right now, she was worried about Matthew, almost to the point of a breakdown.
So, he had to calm her down first. Exposing Gregory's schemes could wait.
As long as Lauren still had feelings for him, Quentin wasn't in a rush.
Just as Quentin had anticipated, Lauren's emotions stabilized after hearing his words.
Deep down, she still trusted Quentin.
She just didn't want to admit it.
Otherwise, how could she have calmed down so quickly after being on the verge of a breakdown just moments ago?
"It's best if Matthew isn't sick. But if he is, I'll cooperate with the doctors," Quentin said again.
This statement directly contradicted what Gregory had told her earlier.
Quentin did care about Matthew.
'At least, he still had feelings for Matthew.' Lauren thought.
She didn't want to believe Quentin, but his words made it hard for her to doubt him.
"I have no reason to believe you," Lauren repeated what she had said earlier. "And I don't want to believe you."
"I'll make you believe," Quentin said calmly. His heart ached, but he didn't show it on his face.
There was plenty of time.
Quentin comforted himself with this thought.
Lauren was imprisoned by Quentin once again, under the guise of it being for her good.
Gregory, who had been waiting at the hospital for a long time, grew impatient.
He called Lauren to ask why she hadn't arrived yet, but it was Quentin who answered the phone.
"Well, Mr. Robinson, when did you develop a habit of stealing Lauren's phone?" Gregory asked, his tone laced with a mocking drawl.
"I didn't know Mr. Walker had a hobby of loitering around hospitals," Quentin retorted, emphasizing the word loitering to remind Gregory that he knew he was lying.
Quentin and Gregory knew each other's backgrounds well, so there was no need for further deception.
Gregory merely chuckled at Quentin's exposure of his lie. "Hospitals are so peaceful! Compared to your noisy mansion, Mr. Robinson, I prefer the quiet."
"The morgue is nice," Quentin replied. "You'd like it."
Gregory responded with chuckles.
"Since Mr. Robinson has Lauren's phone, I assume you've already spoken with her?" Gregory asked after a brief silence.
"So what if I have?" Quentin countered.
"Nothing much. I just wanted to know how Mr. Robinson is feeling right now," Gregory said with a hint of amusement that irritated Quentin.
"If you're so curious, Mr. Walker, why don't you come and see for yourself?" Quentin said coldly.
Gregory, on the other end, waved his hand dismissively and said in a regretful tone, "I'd rather not. I'm busy helping Matthew get better."
Quentin let out a cold laugh but didn't respond.
He knew Gregory was giving him an out, but Quentin had no intention of letting him off the hook.
"Isn't all your time spent figuring out how to deceive Lauren?"
"You're right," Gregory admitted, unafraid that Quentin might be recording the conversation because he knew Quentin wouldn't do that.
"But how'd you find out?" Gregory asked, a sinister smile spreading across his face.
"None of your business," Quentin replied, feeling that something was off but unable to pinpoint what it was.
Gregory laughed. "Oh, I forgot to tell you. The information your ridiculously loyal secretary found was a trail I left on purpose. Do you think he could catch me otherwise?"
Gregory's voice grew deeper, and his words made Quentin realize what was wrong.
Quentin's brow furrowed deeply. Felix had been used.
And it wasn't just Felix. He, Lauren, and even Matthew were all being played by Gregory.
'Damn that man!' Quentin cursed inwardly.
"How does it feel, Quentin? The master manipulator getting played?" Gregory had never felt so pleased.
The thought of Quentin being outsmarted put Gregory in a great mood.
"Manipulated?" Quentin repeated the word, organizing his thoughts before speaking.
"Mr. Walker, you're good at this. Weren't you also used and tripped up not long ago? Or have you forgotten and want to experience it again?"
"What do you mean by that, Mr. Robinson?" Gregory's laughter vanished.
He didn't want to end up in jail, so he was being very cautious. He couldn't believe Quentin could still catch him off guard.
"I think Mr. Walker needs a reminder. Remember what I told you at Robinson Conglomerate?" Quentin lowered his voice.
"Shut up, Quentin!" Gregory roared on the other end.
Gregory had forgotten that Quentin held a critical piece of leverage over him.
"What's the matter, Mr. Walker? Scared?" Quentin taunted, not waiting for Gregory to respond before continuing.
"When you were thirteen, you met a man in his fifties at the orphanage, didn't you?"
Quentin's words were like an invisible hand, ripping open the sealed memories in Gregory's mind.
Everything that happened when he was thirteen came flooding back. The cries for help that went unanswered, only to be met with more brutality from that pervert.
"Shut up, Quentin!" Gregory's voice trembled, whether from fear or anger.
Quentin knew when to stop. He had said enough. There was no need to apply more pressure.
He wasn't a monster, after all.
"What do you want?" Gregory asked. "I've already given you the Cloud Group. What more do you want? My life?"
Gregory was almost hysterical, shouting as if the person on the other end of the line was a beast.
"You know what I want," Quentin said.
He had no interest in Gregory's life. He wasn't a murderer.
"Lauren," Gregory guessed, then asked, "You want me to leave Lauren alone, right?"
"Stay away from Lauren," Quentin said. That was his true intention.
If Gregory had agreed, Quentin wouldn't have made things difficult for him. But Gregory had treated him like a fool, which irritated him, prompting him to bring up Gregory's painful past.
"Fine," Gregory agreed without hesitation, already plotting his next move.
Leaving Lauren alone didn't mean he would leave Quentin alone.
If he had only disliked Quentin before, now he hated him.
He despised anyone who knew his secret. They all deserved to die!
After hanging up, Gregory took out a pen and paper, writing down Quentin and Felix's names. He then drew a heavy cross over Quentin's name.
He would make Quentin pay.
