Chapter 332 Peaceful Coexistence
Lauren and Quentin finished dinner in silence, but it prompted her to reminisce about their past times.
When Quentin put down his fork, Lauren started clearing the table. Quentin quickly got up to help. "Let me give you a hand," he said, grabbing some dishes and heading to the kitchen.
"Do you even know how to do this?" Lauren asked, a bit skeptical.
Quentin just smiled.
At the sink, Lauren washed the dishes and handed them to Quentin, who dried them and put them away. Sometimes, she'd pause to wait for him to catch up, and it felt like they were a long-time couple again.
Lauren thought about saying something, but then she remembered they were divorced and kept quiet. Out of the blue, Quentin said, "Lauren, living together like this is pretty good."
Lauren looked down, fiddling with a dish.
"It's a shame we spent so much time arguing and holding grudges," Quentin added, sounding regretful.
"It's all in the past," Lauren replied with a bitter smile. "What's important is to cherish the present."
"Lauren, let's go back to how things were," Quentin said, pulling her into a hug.
Lauren was caught off guard and didn't know what to say. She felt a lump in her throat and wanted to cry. She wasn't sure if she could trust Quentin again, but she still had feelings for him and couldn't bring herself to push him away.
"It's getting late, I should head back," she said, gently pushing him away and turning to leave.
"Please stay here," Quentin said, holding her hand.
"But what about Matthew?" Lauren hesitated.
"It's fine. Matthew will understand. He'll be happy you're here," Quentin reassured her.
After a moment of silence, Lauren agreed. "Okay, just this once."
She called home, and as Quentin predicted, Matthew was thrilled. "Mommy, don't worry about me. Stay with Daddy," he said excitedly. "It's okay if you don't come back for a few days."
Lauren couldn't help but wonder if this mischievous little boy was more like Quentin than her. Matthew and Quentin had only met a few times, but they already had a great relationship.
Thinking about it, Lauren couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy towards Quentin.
After giving Matthew a few simple instructions, she hung up the phone, and the room fell silent.
Lauren glanced at Quentin, unsure of what to say. He was staring at his phone with a serious look on his face.
"What's up?" she asked, a bit concerned.
"I need to go back to the company tomorrow," Quentin said, looking up. "Come with me."
"Sure," Lauren agreed without a second thought. She felt responsible for the mess they were in and wanted to face whatever was coming alongside Quentin.
It was late, and Lauren headed to the bedroom, not expecting Quentin to follow her in. When he did, she was about to leave for another room, but he pulled her onto the bed.
"What are you doing?" she asked, her heart racing.
"Just sleeping," Quentin said, closing his eyes and pretending to be asleep. But he held her hand tightly, not wanting her to leave.
"This might not be appropriate, after all..." Lauren trailed off, unable to finish the sentence. They were divorced, and saying it out loud would hurt them both.
Quentin stayed silent, and Lauren listened to his steady breathing, feeling the rise and fall of his chest. She didn't move, letting him hold her, and soon they both drifted off to sleep.
It was the first time in a long while that they spent a peaceful night together, without any arguments or tension. It felt like they were a couple again.
The next morning, Quentin and Lauren arrived at Robinson Conglomerate as planned. The once familiar place now made them hesitate.
"Did Noah ask you to come?" Lauren asked.
"Yeah," Quentin nodded.
As they approached the entrance, a security guard stopped them. "Do you have an appointment?" he asked bluntly.
"What do you mean?" Lauren snapped. "Don't you recognize him?"
"I do," the guard sneered. "He was the former president. Even though Mr. Robinson was good to me, I have to be loyal to my current boss."
"Fine," Quentin said coldly, glancing at the guard's name tag. "I have an invitation. Mr. Martin asked me to come."
The guard made a call to confirm. "Mr. Martin says you can go up now. Hurry up and don't waste his time."
Quentin and Lauren exchanged a look and walked in silently. This place was no longer Quentin's domain.
