Chapter 132 At a Disadvantage
Lauren did not fully grasp what this situation meant for the Robinson Conglomerate. Still, from Quentin and Noah's conversation, she understood that Anthony was not someone to be easily dealt with.
Today's events were likely a trap set by Anthony. Lauren wished she could offer Quentin some support at this moment but felt helpless. She could do nothing.
"Quentin, are you alright?" Lauren asked worriedly, observing Quentin's serious expression with growing concern.
Quentin patted Lauren's head and said, "Don't look at me like that. Don't worry, I'm fine. But, the promises I made to you might have to wait. However, one day, I will make you the envy of every woman in City A. I will make you happy."
Lauren's eyes glistened with tears. She did not want to be the envy of others but wanted a simple, peaceful life. Moreover, she wanted Quentin to be less stressed about work.
"It doesn't matter. No matter what others think, I already appear before everyone as Mrs. Robinson. Since that's the case, I won't back down," Lauren said.
"Stop being so sweet. Don't forget you still have important matters to handle. Tomorrow, the news is likely to claim you two are divorced. So, what's your plan? A quick remarriage?" Noah interjected.
Quentin thought for a moment before saying, "Getting remarried now is out of the question. There will definitely be paparazzi following us. If we get remarried, it would confirm that we were indeed divorced. I believe no one can prove that Lauren and I are divorced, so I'm not afraid of what tomorrow's news will say."
Lauren felt deeply guilty. She hadn't expected that her impulsive decision to divorce would lead to such a big problem now.
"You're right. So, what are you planning to do? Just ignore it?" Noah also found the situation difficult to handle.
Quentin walked to the window, looking at his reflection in the glass, and said, "Since Anthony wants to use public opinion to suppress the Robinson Conglomerate, we will make his plan fail. Noah, we have one night. I will have people buy out all the media companies in City A to stop them from slandering Lauren and me."
Noah immediately shook his head. "No, you don't know how many reporters come today. Are you planning to buy them all out? That's impossible. Though you have deep pockets, this won't stop others. Think about it, with so many people at the banquet, any one of them could post something online. It would spread quickly. It's useless."
Lauren thought Noah made sense. "Quentin, I think Mr. Martin is right. Your method won't effectively silence everyone. So, I think it's better not to waste money."
Quentin listened to their opinions and thought seriously. Indeed, there were too many people at the banquet. Anyone present could spread the news. So, what happened tonight was already beyond recovery.
"Alright, I understand. Lauren, you have to be prepared. Tomorrow might be quite harsh for you." Quentin's eyes were cold. He couldn't bear to let Lauren face this, but there was nothing he could do now.
Lauren was also deep in thought, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't come up with a reliable and effective solution. She truly wasn't cut out for the business world. Someone like her would have likely perished many times over in the cutthroat world of commerce.
Quentin felt a bit troubled. He looked at Lauren's anxious face in the mirror, then turned around to face her.
"Alright, it's very late now. Noah, help me take Lauren home," Quentin said.
"Okay, we won't reach any conclusions tonight anyway. Lauren, let's go," Noah said.
Lauren looked at Quentin earnestly and said, "No, I want to stay. Grandma got hurt because of me. I need to be here with her."
She might not be able to help much, but she could at least face this together with Quentin.
Lauren looked into Quentin's eyes with determination. They shared a deep, silent exchange, an unspoken understanding passing between them.
Noah didn't interrupt. The path of love for Lauren and Quentin had been too rough, with too many issues to resolve. It seemed true happiness was still a long way off for them.
"Alright, I'll arrange a room next to Grandma's for you to rest," Quentin agreed.
Lauren was delighted and instinctively grabbed Quentin's hand. His hand was cold, making her worry about his well-being.
"As long as you let me stay, I'll follow your arrangements," Lauren smiled, but she didn't let go of his hand, hoping to warm him up.
Afterward, Noah left the hospital to handle matters at the company. Once Cecilia brought Quentin's laptop and documents, Lauren went to the adjacent room to rest while Quentin remained seated on a chair outside the hospital room, working.
Lauren woke up to find it was already four in the morning. She walked out of the room and saw Quentin still in the same position, typing away, seemingly unaware of fatigue. His eyes were slightly red. Lauren knew he must be very tired, yet he kept pushing on.
"Quentin, rest for a while. I'll stay here and keep watch," Lauren said, standing in front of Quentin.
Seeing Quentin like this made her heartache. It was at this moment that she realized how important Quentin was to her. In the past, Lauren might have deceived herself into thinking she no longer cared about Quentin, but in times of trouble, she would stand by his side without hesitation. Her heart screamed that he was the love of her life.
"No need. You're pregnant. You need more rest than I do. I'm used to this," Quentin said, looking up and forcing a smile to comfort Lauren.
Seeing that smile, Lauren was heartbroken even more for Quentin. But she couldn't help him with his work, nor could she find the words to comfort him, so she returned to her room in desolation.
The next day, the news exploded with stories about Lauren and Quentin. Some claimed they were frauds in love, faking affection after a divorce. Others said Lauren was pretending to be innocent, using underhanded tactics to win over Quentin, who initially despised her. They claimed Quentin had been deceived by her and had ultimately turned against Wendy.
