Chapter 311 Matthew Comes Knocking
Quentin was fuming after just a few words with Lauren. This woman had him running in circles and still didn't say anything that made him happy. She didn't even acknowledge his injuries, not a single word of concern.
Quentin couldn't hold it in anymore and blurted out, "Can't you see I'm hurt?"
Lauren was caught off guard and felt a bit helpless. At that moment, Quentin looked like a kid craving attention, just like Matthew when he threw his little fits.
She glanced at Quentin a few times before saying, "You've got so many enemies; you should be more careful."
Her cold response only made him angrier.
"Yeah, I have a lot of enemies. I don't even know if this car accident was the Obsidian Gang's doing. But hey, I got lucky, and Sophia risked her life to save me," Quentin said, his voice dripping with disappointment. Maybe he shouldn't have expected anything from Lauren in the first place.
Lauren nodded. "Miss Hall really loves you; it's touching."
Quentin, even more provoked, shot back, "Yeah, so I promised her I'd be with her. You'll give us your blessing, right?"
Lauren felt a surge of anxiety and wiped her suddenly clammy palms. She nodded and replied, "Of course, you two are perfect for each other."
"Great, I'll invite you to our wedding. I'm sure someone as generous as you will come," Quentin said, his eyes narrowing dangerously.
Lauren felt like she was barely holding it together. She managed a smile. "I'd be honored."
Quentin stood up, glaring at her as if trying to see through her. Finally, he walked away, looking defeated.
After he left, Lauren sat there, frozen. This painful chapter was finally over!
Quentin getting married should be good for her, right? Once he's got his own family, he won't try to take Matthew away anymore, right?
Lauren laughed and cried at the same time, not sure if she felt happy or sad. Tears streamed down her face.
Hearing no noise downstairs, Kimberly came down and saw Lauren's tear-streaked face. "Lauren," she called out, heartbroken.
Kimberly knew Lauren loved Quentin deeply, but she thought time would heal her wounds. She underestimated Lauren's feelings.
Every time Lauren got hurt, she reopened her wounds, torturing herself. Kimberly saw it all and felt the pain but couldn't do anything to help.
Lauren wiped her tears and smiled bitterly. "Mom, I really don't want to get married again."
Kimberly wanted to say something but felt a lump in her throat. She was afraid her decisions would hurt Lauren again.
Finally, Kimberly walked over to Lauren, sat down beside her, and hugged her tightly. "Okay, I won't force you anymore. From now on, you make your own decisions."
Lauren cried even harder, leaning on Kimberly's shoulder.
Half a month later, Sophia was finally able to walk and wasted no time getting discharged.
She couldn't stop thinking about Quentin's promise to get engaged once she was out. The excitement kept her up at night, just hoping her body would heal quickly. She was also scared something might go wrong.
Quentin kept his word. After getting no response from Lauren, he was done. Maybe it was time to move on.
The news spread like wildfire, and soon everyone knew about Quentin and Sophia's upcoming engagement.
Matthew overheard the news and memorized the hotel where the engagement would be. Even though he was just a kid, he decided he had to confront Quentin and ask if he really didn't want him and Lauren anymore.
The autumn wind was chilly, but the hotel entrance was buzzing with people and cars. Today was Quentin and Sophia's big day.
Among the guests, a small figure was looking around. It was Matthew. During his lunch break, Matthew had snuck out of school, using his saved-up allowance to take a cab to the hotel.
But he was alone, and there were security guards checking invitations at the entrance. He knew he needed an adult to get in. Clever as he was, Matthew came up with a plan. He looked for guests with kids and found his target.
He quickly approached a couple with a little girl and said, "Excuse me, sir, ma'am. I came here with my dad, but he saw an old friend and left me alone. I'm a bit scared. Could you take me in to find him?"
The woman smiled warmly at Matthew, clearly charmed. "Of course, sweetie. You can come in with us."
Matthew thanked them politely, then held the little girl's hand, blending in as if he were their child, and smoothly entered the hotel.
Once inside, Matthew found a chance to slip away. He started looking for Quentin. People assumed he was with someone else and didn't question him.
Suddenly, he spotted a familiar face. He ran over and whispered, "Felix, can you take me to Quentin?"
Matthew stubbornly refused to call Quentin "Dad" anymore, thinking Quentin wanted to abandon him, so he was sulking.
Felix turned at the sound and was shocked to see Matthew. "Matthew, what are you doing here? Who did you come with?"
Matthew frowned. "I came by myself! I need to talk to Quentin. Please take me to him!"
Felix was at a loss, hearing that Matthew had come alone. He decided to take him to Quentin and let him handle it.
At that moment, Quentin was in the lounge, busy with work, while Sophia looked at him with a mix of frustration and longing.
"Quentin, I know you're busy, but today is our engagement day. Can you put work aside until after the party?" Sophia asked gently. She felt like she was walking on eggshells, having worked so hard to get to this moment and knowing she couldn't afford any slip-ups now.
