Chapter 309 The Plot Succeeds
The tension in the room was palpable. Kimberly was freaking out that Lauren had been embarrassed by Quentin again, while Ulysses was stressing about losing such a strong ally in Quentin.
Lauren pulled herself together, realizing she had said too much. She cleared her throat and tried to act cool, saying, "It's better to rely on yourself than to ask for help. Dad, remember that. Don't expect others to clean up your mess."
Ulysses shot Lauren a furious look. "So, you think I'm just causing you trouble, huh? Fine, I'll leave. What can I expect from an ungrateful daughter like you?" With that, Ulysses stormed out, slamming the door behind him.
Kimberly squeezed Lauren's hand and tried to comfort her, "Don't worry about him. Let him do whatever he wants. We'll just pretend he's not part of this family."
Lauren looked at Kimberly, her face pale, and said softly, "I know Dad hurt you, and I know you're actually worried about him. Mom, I'm doing this to make Dad more rational. You won't blame me for being heartless, will you?"
"No, I get it, and I support you!" Kimberly said, looking at Lauren with loving eyes.
They had both been hurt deeply by their husbands, sharing the same pain. Kimberly wouldn't make things harder for Lauren, so she avoided talking about Quentin, not wanting to make Lauren sad.
At the hospital.
Sophia had taken a serious hit in the car accident, protecting Quentin. She had four broken ribs and was bleeding badly, making her condition critical. Luckily, after emergency treatment, she was out of immediate danger.
Quentin looked at Sophia with a mix of emotions. If Sophia hadn't jumped in front of him, he'd be the one lying in that hospital bed.
Since Sophia returned, Quentin no longer felt the same way about her. He believed he had matured and was no longer the guy who constantly talked about love or dwelled on the past. To him, Sophia was just a regular friend to him.
But seeing her risk her life for him, his heart was still touched. This woman loved him more than Lauren did.
Quentin looked at the battered Sophia, feeling deeply sad. This foolish woman didn't need to risk her life to save him.
Guys always found it hard to be mean to gentle and kind people. Quentin couldn't find hope with Lauren, but he easily found it with Sophia, making his heart waver.
At that moment, Sophia slowly opened her eyes. She looked around and finally saw Quentin's face, the one she had missed so much.
Quentin had also been hurt in the car accident; his head and arm were wrapped in bandages, and his once-handsome face was marred by cuts and bruises. Despite his disheveled appearance, Sophia's eyes sparkled with relief and affection.
"Quentin, are you okay?" Sophia asked worriedly, remembering what had happened before she passed out.
Seeing Sophia trying to get up, Quentin gently pressed her shoulder, making her lie back down. "You're seriously hurt. Don't move," he said, his brief words showing his concern.
Seeing Quentin back to his usual gentle self, Sophia felt a mix of happiness and excitement. "Quentin, you're finally paying attention to me? I'm so happy."
Hearing this, Quentin felt a pang of sadness for her. Even though she had been raised in his family since she was a kid, the Robinsons treated her like their own, giving her the same love and care as him. Plus, she had always been a beauty, standing out in any crowd, which had made her proud over time.
Quentin replied softly, "Next time, don't be so impulsive. Do you know you almost didn't wake up?"
Sophia blinked and gave a bitter smile. "It was a reflex. I couldn't help it."
Quentin stood up, ready to leave. "Take good care of yourself. I've hired the best doctors for you. Let me know if you need anything."
"Quentin!" Sophia shouted, then started coughing violently. The tubes attached to her shook, making her look extremely fragile.
Seeing this, Quentin immediately walked over. "Take it easy. Why are you so worked up?"
Sophia caught her breath and grabbed Quentin's hand with her free one. "Quentin, can you give us another chance? I really regret it. I know I was wrong. I can't live without you! Do you know why I risked my life to save you? Because at that moment, my heart felt dead. Without your love, my life has no meaning, so I rushed over without thinking."
Quentin frowned at Sophia. "You're tired and need to rest. We'll talk about this later."
"No, I don't want to talk about it later, Quentin. I can love you with my life. Why can't you give me another chance?" Sophia endured the pain, forcing Quentin to make a promise.
She was secretly pleased. God had indeed favored her, letting her survive and successfully save Quentin's life, making her his benefactor. Now she had leverage to force Quentin to agree.
Quentin looked troubled. "You saved me, and I'm very grateful, but we really..."
He didn't finish his sentence, but Sophia already got the message. Her face changed, and before Quentin could react, she pulled out the tubes from her body and threw the IV needle on the floor.
Quentin shouted angrily, "What are you doing? Are you crazy?"
Tears streamed down Sophia's face. She cried, "Quentin, my life is meaningless without your love. Why didn't I die in the car accident? Why did you save me?"
Quentin quickly called the doctor, but Sophia was out of control and completely uncooperative, leaving everyone helpless.
The doctor shook his head at Quentin and said, "The patient is seriously injured. She can't go without the IV. You're her family, right? You must persuade her, or her wounds will get infected, putting her life in danger."
Quentin looked at Sophia, torn inside. He hadn't expected her to be so stubborn and reckless. He painfully squeezed out the words, "Fine. I promise you."
Hearing Quentin's promise, Sophia cried tears of joy, and her emotions gradually calmed down.
But Quentin couldn't feel happy. He knew deep down he didn't love her. But he couldn't just watch her die in front of him. For the first time in his life, Quentin felt coerced, and today, he gave in.
