Chapter 135 Adding Fuel to the Fire
Lauren's heart bled, and tears streamed uncontrollably down her face. She believed she had not wronged her parents, yet in the face of Ulysses' accusations, she found herself without a single word of rebuttal.
Seeing Lauren so heartbroken, Jessica felt her heart ache as well.
"Ulysses, if you have something to say, make it clear. Why are you taking it out on Lauren? She is a member of the Robinson family. Are you scolding her on purpose to show me?" Jessica was also angry.
Jessica cherished Lauren like a treasure and could not tolerate anyone scolding her, not even her father.
"The Robinson family? You can barely protect yourselves. Do you still want to drag down our Walker family? I'm not being unreasonable, but you are utterly irresponsible. Lauren is being slandered because of Quentin. Yet, your family just stands by and does nothing to defend her," Ulysses said aggressively.
Ulysses felt triumphant at that moment, never imagining that one day he could speak to members of the Robinson family in such an arrogant tone.
"Make yourself clear. Who is slandering Lauren? I haven't understood a word you've said since you walked in. What exactly has the Robinson family done to wrong the Walker family?" Jessica began to cough violently in her anger.
Lauren hadn't expected Ulysses to reveal everything. She was both angry and helpless. "Grandma, don't listen to Dad's nonsense. He's angry with me. Don't be upset. I'll explain everything to you later. Dad, no matter how wrong I am, you shouldn't speak to Grandma like this. If you have something to say, let's talk outside!"
As Lauren spoke, she tried to drag Ulysses out of the hospital room. Ulysses impatiently pushed Lauren aside and took out his phone, placing it in front of Jessica.
"Take a good look at how people are scolding Lauren outside. The Robinson family can endure it, but I can't. I demand a reasonable explanation today, or I won't let it go," Ulysses said.
Jessica took the phone in confusion and opened the news section. The headline was about Lauren, called 'Scheming Woman Lauren Climbs to the Top, Ruthlessly Eliminates Rival, Determined to Destroy Wendy.'
All the comments below were scolding Lauren.
[Lauren is just a filthy whore, a worthless gold-digger! Quentin must be blind to choose her over the goddess Wendy!]
[Lauren must have plotted this. From the moment she schemes to marry Quentin, it is clear she is no simple woman!]
[Everyone, let's support getting Lauren out of City A!]
Seeing this, Jessica could no longer control her emotions and fainted.
"Grandma! Grandma! Doctor, come quickly!" Lauren shouted, holding Jessica and crying helplessly.
Seeing Jessica faint from anger, Ulysses realized he had caused trouble. He hesitated for a moment but ultimately fled in panic.
After the doctor's rescue, Jessica regained consciousness. She lay weakly on the hospital bed and insisted on calling Lauren over.
Lauren was heartbroken. She looked at Jessica with tearful eyes. "Grandma, let me explain. Please don't get agitated."
Jessica grasped Lauren's hand and said, "In the end, it is the Robinson family that has wronged you!"
Hearing this, Lauren felt an immense sorrow. "Grandma, please don't say that. As long as you believe in me and know that I'm not the person the internet says I am, that's enough."
"Dear, you've gone through so much. I know exactly what kind of person you are, but my knowing isn't enough. Everyone needs to know it. You're the kindest and purest person. Where is Quentin? Go and call him over. I need to ask him why he hasn't resolved this matter yet! What on earth is he busy with?" Jessica said, her emotions rising again.
"Grandma, please don't get agitated. Quentin is already handling this matter. It should be resolved soon. Even if it can't be resolved, it's okay. What others think is their business. I'll just continue being myself." Lauren comforted Jessica.
Lauren's claim that she didn't mind at all was a lie. But at this point, she couldn't exhibit any weakness because weakness was for the weak. She was not feeble. With so many family members, she had to be strong.
"Lauren, I truly owe you an apology. It's because of my decision back then that you're suffering so much now," Jessica also began to cry.
If she hadn't arranged Lauren and Quentin's marriage, Lauren wouldn't be the subject of ridicule now.
"No, Grandma, I'm really grateful to you. I believe that bad things will eventually pass, and kindness and sincerity will remain in people's hearts forever." Lauren firmly believed this!
After Jessica fell asleep, Lauren quietly left her room. Unable to hold back any longer, she began to cry silently.
Lauren was aware of some of the online comments. She thought that if she didn't know about them, they wouldn't affect her.
She believed that if she pretended not to know, the whole world would forget about her. But she was wrong.
Those things were real, and she couldn't avoid or ignore them.
Leaning against the railing, Lauren sobbed uncontrollably, not noticing someone silently approaching from behind.
Suddenly, a pair of large hands encircled her waist. "Don't cry. I'm here," Quentin murmured in her ear. He knew that Lauren couldn't bear it alone. Her smile was just her last bit of strength.
Hearing that familiar voice, Lauren cried even harder. Quentin's comfort only deepened her sorrow. Since Quentin understood her feelings, she no longer needed to pretend. Lauren began to cry out loud.
After crying, Lauren felt much better, as if those tears had washed away all her sadness.
"Why are you back at this time? Doesn't Mr. Martin need you for something?" Lauren asked Quentin.
"I wanted to see you." Quentin made no effort to hide his concern for Lauren. In tough times, he realized how precious she was to him.
Lauren smiled lightly. "I'm okay. Don't worry. You can go back to your work. I'll take care of Grandma and won't let anyone upset her again."
Quentin had already heard about Ulysses' actions, but after all, he was Quentin's father-in-law.
This time, Quentin decided to let it go. But if it happened again, regardless of their relationship, Quentin would make him pay.
"Grandma is very important, and so are you. Take good care of yourself." Quentin looked at Lauren without blinking as if afraid she would disappear from his sight.
Facing Quentin's intense gaze, Lauren shyly nodded. "I understand."
