Chapter 108 Elizabeth Gave Birth
In that little town, Elizabeth had already turned off her phone, just like Samuel had asked her to.
After her first call with Simon, Elizabeth rushed to a phone booth to call an ambulance. It arrived quickly, and as they were loading Samuel into it, he started to come around.
Seeing Elizabeth in tears, Samuel managed to say, "Elizabeth, don't cry. I'm not going to die."
Elizabeth nodded, still sobbing. "Samuel, thank you for risking your life to save me. Mr. Jones just called and said Alexander is looking for us everywhere. I ruined his wedding, and he won't let me go. The truck didn't kill me, so he'll find another way. Thank you, Samuel. You might get dragged into this because of me. I'm so sorry."
Samuel frowned. "What did you say? Simon called?"
Elizabeth nodded. "What's wrong?"
"Turn off your phone right now and don't answer any calls. We're done with everything in Aldoria, got it?" Samuel said, weak but urgent.
Elizabeth cried harder. "But your parents..."
Samuel gave a weak smile. "Don't worry. I know Alexander. He's ruthless, but he doesn't kill innocent people. My parents never crossed him; they even helped him and Esme when they were struggling. That's why my family got suppressed by Brent. Alexander won't touch my parents."
Samuel used almost all his strength to say this. He was still burning up with fever, and his injured left hand had turned dark purple. It wasn't bleeding anymore, but it was badly swollen and infected.
Elizabeth, worried, said, "Stop talking, Samuel. We need to get your wound cleaned."
The ambulance took Samuel to the hospital. The doctors first brought down his fever, then cleaned the infected area on his hand, and finally bandaged it up. It took eight hours.
Even though it was a small cut, less than four inches, it was considered major surgery because it had been left untreated for so long.
Samuel wasn't out of the high-risk surgery room until the next morning. His whole hand was bandaged, his fever had gone down, but his face was still pale.
Elizabeth smiled with relief. "Samuel, the doctor said your hand will be fine. You'll just need a few days in the hospital. By the way, thank you."
"The phone's off, right?" Samuel asked.
"Yeah," Elizabeth replied.
"Throw it away. I'll never use that number again. When I get out of here, we'll find a house in a quiet place so you can have a healthy pregnancy," Samuel said gently, looking at Elizabeth.
Elizabeth started crying again. "Samuel, I don't really know you. I still don't get why you're so good to me."
"Scared? Afraid I'll treat you like Owen did?" Samuel asked with a smile.
Elizabeth didn't say anything, feeling uneasy.
Samuel sighed. "It's normal to be scared. But I won't do that. I saw how you took care of Alexander's mom for two months. That kind of kindness can't be faked. I also saw how hard you worked at the design company and the construction site. I saw how you repaid Owen."
Samuel looked at her with genuine sincerity. "Meeting you was the best thing that ever happened to Owen, but he was too blind to see it."
Elizabeth stayed quiet for a moment, unsure of what to say. After a bit, she finally spoke up, "Honestly, I never loved Owen. I knew from the start he was just playing with me. I was kind to him because he was the only one who showed me any warmth. I wanted to be good to him, but I never expected him to treat me like that..."
"I get it," Samuel said with a gentle smile. "You didn't love Owen, and I don't expect you to love me either. Elizabeth, I'm not trying to make you fall for me. I'm just completely taken by you and willing to do anything for you. Don't worry, I'll never hurt you or force you into anything you don't want."
Elizabeth started to cry. "Thank you, Samuel. I'll take good care of you."
True to her word, Elizabeth stayed by Samuel's side the entire half month he was in the hospital.
During that time, she also got rid of Samuel's phone.
But even with all their precautions, on the day Samuel was discharged, a group of burly men blocked their way at the hospital entrance and dragged them into a car. Samuel, still weak, couldn't fight back, and Elizabeth, being pregnant, was even more helpless.
They were shoved into a black van that sped off.
With their mouths sealed, they were taken to the edge of a cliff.
"Mark this day, because a year from now, it will be the anniversary of your death,," a man in black sunglasses said coldly.
Elizabeth trembled with fear as Samuel held her close and bravely asked, "I can die, but can you at least tell me who wants us dead?"
"Don't you know whose wedding you ruined?" the man in sunglasses replied.
With that, he signaled to his men.
Six strong guys threw Elizabeth and Samuel off the cliff.
"Samuel!" Elizabeth's scream echoed as they fell.
The men on the cliff drove away without a second thought, heading back to Sunwillow City to report to their client and collect their final payment.
Miraculously, Elizabeth and Samuel landed on a small truck filled with seven feet of soft hay. Elizabeth felt no pain, just a soft, cushioned landing.
A month later, they moved to an even more remote city.
Elizabeth hoped this secluded place would keep them hidden, though she regretted not being able to visit her deceased mother's grave one last time.
Despite her regrets, she had to stay put for the sake of the baby growing inside her.
After settling in, Samuel took Elizabeth to the hospital for her first prenatal checkup. The doctor confirmed that the baby was healthy.
Despite all the hardships and close calls, the baby was doing well.
Time flew by, and Elizabeth found herself living comfortably in the small town. Before she knew it, her due date had arrived.
One morning, while she was watering the garden at the foot of the mountain, she felt a sharp pain in her abdomen. She immediately called Samuel, who was out working. "Samuel, I think I'm going into labor."
