Chapter 61 How to Deal with Her?
Elizabeth's face was a cocktail of emotions, and she straight-up ignored Owen's question.
That bright, innocent smile she’d been rocking the past few days? Gone. Now she was back to her usual cold, indifferent, and lonely self.
To Owen, she looked kinda pitiful.
Owen loved seeing her like this—pitiful but still stubborn. It made the game way more interesting.
"I was wondering why you’ve been all sunshine and rainbows lately, like a flower suddenly blooming. Turns out Alexander’s been treating you nice. But you got cocky. Alexander gave you some special attention for, what, two days? And you thought you could go up against his real girl? Bold move."
Owen kept going, "I never pegged you for someone who could get stuff done. Alexander, Simon, and me—we’re all big shots in Sunwillow City. You’ve got a good eye!"
Elizabeth stayed quiet.
Owen always had a sharp tongue, but he thought he was the best of the three guys towards her. To Elizabeth, Owen was just a spoiled, reckless kid. He was blunt, but his scheming wasn’t on Alexander’s level.
Faced with Owen’s sarcasm, Elizabeth said nothing. She was thinking about how Alexander would deal with her.
Seeing her stay silent, Owen thought, 'She’s got nerves of steel! Not scared of anything, huh?'
Just as Owen was about to throw more shade, someone called out, "Owen, hurry up and go see your aunt!"
"Coming!" Owen dashed off.
Elizabeth thought, 'Owen’s aunt? Must be talking about Esme.'
Esme had always wanted to be recognized by the Windsor family. She never mentioned it to Alexander because he had just become the head of the family and had a lot on his plate. Esme didn’t want to bother him.
But Elizabeth knew Esme always wanted that acknowledgment. She knew this even when she was in prison.
Today, the Windsor family and their relatives had come to visit Esme. Esme must be over the moon. Elizabeth figured if Esme was happy and the Windsor family visited her often, Esme might not need her care and comfort anymore. If that was the case, she could leave right away.
Following the Windsor family, Elizabeth quietly approached the window of Esme’s hospital room. She crouched outside, eavesdropping.
Inside, Esme’s crying was full of grievance.
Then Marcus' comforting voice came through. "Esme, don’t cry. Crying will only make things worse. To help you recover, I’ll get the best meds from around the world for you."
Esme sobbed even harder, her voice choked with tears, "You finally acknowledge me?"
"You are the wife of my son, Felix Windsor, and your son Alexander is the most outstanding heir of the Windsor family," Marcus said proudly.
"You finally acknowledge me," Esme said, covering her face and crying uncontrollably.
Marcus' wife, Amara Windsor, came to Esme and comforted her, "Esme, Felix is still abroad. Once he’s done with his business, he’ll come back and marry you. After the wedding, you’ll be a true member of the Windsor family. Can you call me Mom?"
With tears streaming down her face, Esme looked at Amara and whispered, "Mom."
"Esme, take care of yourself. You’re gonna get better, I promise," Amara said, hugging her tight.
Elizabeth, spying through the window, felt a sharp pang of sorrow.
Esme had been through hell. In her youth, she got framed and ended up with Felix, the eldest Windsor son. At first, she didn’t know Felix had a wife and three kids abroad. By the time she found out, she was nine months pregnant, just two weeks from giving birth.
After the baby was born, Felix treated Esme and their son well. Until Alexander turned five, Felix’s wife showed up to take Alexander away and kick Esme out.
No way Esme was gonna let that happen. The struggle led to Esme taking Alexander and fleeing abroad. The Windsor family found them several times and forcibly took Alexander away.
Esme and Alexander were separated and reunited multiple times since then. When Alexander hit his teens, Esme realized the Windsor family would never let her keep Alexander. Not only that, but Alexander wasn’t getting the treatment he deserved in the Windsor family. For example, inheritance rights.
It was a sad situation.
From then on, Esme stopped trying to escape and focused on securing a good future for Alexander. She wanted him to rightfully become one of the Windsor heirs.
Plus, she had only ever loved Felix. Deep down, she still loved him a lot.
So, Esme was determined to become a member of the Windsor family and secure Alexander’s inheritance rights. She paid a heavy price for it.
She spent ten years in prison.
Those ten years wrecked Esme’s health, leaving her with numerous ailments. Now, she was terminally ill, and only now did the Windsor family finally acknowledge her.
Naturally, she was very emotional.
With Esme entering the Windsor family genealogy, Alexander would be legitimized. Esme’s lifelong burden was finally lifted.
Elizabeth waited until the Windsor family had all left before quietly entering Esme’s hospital room. She had planned to say goodbye to Esme but found that Esme’s condition had worsened.
Esme didn’t have the same energy and vigor as before. When Elizabeth touched Esme’s head, it felt unusually hot. After taking her temperature, Elizabeth found out that Esme had a high fever of 100.4°F.
The doctor said Esme had always had an obsession in her heart. Now that her wish had been fulfilled, she finally relaxed, and this release led to a deterioration in her overall health.
That night, Elizabeth stayed with the feverish Esme until eleven o’clock. Only when Esme’s fever temporarily subsided did Elizabeth leave the hospital. By the time she took the bus back to Alexander’s place, it was already 1 a.m.
Before opening the door, Elizabeth was super anxious. She paced outside for a full ten minutes before finally pushing the door open.
As soon as the door opened, Alexander grabbed Elizabeth and slammed her against the wall.
Elizabeth shrunk back in fear, asking nervously, "What are you gonna do?"
