Chapter 53 Clara's Jealousy in the Mall
Elizabeth's scream was cut short as she was held tightly in Alexander's arms. He covered her eyes with his chest, and she couldn't see anything.
But she felt an unprecedented sense of security.
Next, Alexander covered her ears with his large hand.
Then, Elizabeth heard a few muffled sounds, similar to fireworks.
Instinctively, Elizabeth snuggled closer into Alexander's embrace.
Alexander released his hand from her ears, and she heard him say to Gavin, "Drive."
The car sped away.
Elizabeth slowly sat up from Alexander's arms, her face flushed red, not daring to look at him. She only dared to sneak a glance at the rearview mirror, where she saw a person lying down at the spot where they had just parked.
She realized that the muffled sounds she heard were actually gunshots.
Elizabeth couldn't help but glance at Alexander.
His calm face betrayed no sign that anything had happened.
She didn't speak for the rest of the journey. In her mind, she kept replaying the scene of him killing that person, with one arm around her, covering her eyes and ears. She knew he didn't want her to see the horrifying side of things.
He was afraid she would be scared.
Elizabeth felt a strange warmth enveloping her heart.
Alexander took her to dinner, but she had little appetite. It was impossible to be completely calm and unafraid. Alexander didn't ask her why; he just ate a little symbolically and then took her to a mall to pick out clothes for her.
Elizabeth had been to such malls during her college days but had never bought anything from them.
She couldn't afford the clothes there.
She would just look at the clothes while she window-shopped each time.
Alexander took her to counters along with the clothes that he had picked. It had a youthful style, his taste was surprisingly good. The styles he chose all suited Elizabeth well.
The salespeople at the counters, seeing a wealthy man like Alexander, were all eager to please, flattering him, "Sir, your girlfriend is really beautiful and has an extraordinary temperament."
"She's my sister," Alexander said.
They flattered, "No wonder she looks so much like you."
Elizabeth remained silent.
From a distance, behind a corner near a trash elevator, Oliver, Clara, and Lila were watching Elizabeth and Alexander intently.
Clara's eyes were bloodshot with tears, and she gritted her teeth as she spoke, "Dad! I want to kill that bitch Elizabeth now! If we don't get rid of her, one day Alexander will eliminate our whole family."
Clara's cries were filled with despair.
She had repeatedly told Alexander that she wanted to live with him and have sex with him, but Alexander always drove her away with displeasure.
Now Clara didn't dare to make any requests in front of Alexander, fearing that she might easily anger him.
She thought Alexander was naturally cold, but she never imagined he would bring Elizabeth to the most bustling place in Aldoria and personally pick out clothes for her.
Clara was insanely jealous!
Lila, beside her, was also filled with hatred, her face contorted. She hit Oliver's shoulder, and asked, "Oliver, didn't you talk to her yesterday?"
Oliver's face was gloomy, his eyes filled with hatred as if he could kill Elizabeth with his gaze. He replied, "Yeah, but Elizabeth defied me. It seems she's getting more confident with Alexander backing her up!"
"If we had that woman in our grasp, Elizabeth would have to kneel before us!" Lila said through gritted teeth, then asked Oliver, "You paid a high price for a private detective to find that woman's whereabouts. Any leads yet?"
Oliver sighed in frustration.
He didn't answer, but Lila and Clara could tell from his tone that there wasn't much hope.
Seeing Lila and Clara's hatred, Oliver felt both guilty and angry. "We must find that woman, no matter the cost. But until we do, we must save ourselves first, and Clara must marry Alexander, no matter what!" he reminded.
Clara wiped her tears. She called out to him, "Dad."
"Clara, I'll find a way!" Oliver said, his eyes filled with malice as he glared at Elizabeth.
From a distance, Elizabeth, trying on clothes at the women's counter, shivered.
"What's wrong?" Alexander asked.
"Maybe this outfit is too thin. It's almost winter, and I feel a bit cold. It's not very suitable," Elizabeth said softly. Then she looked at the pile of shopping bags at the counter's entrance and continued, "We've already bought nearly twenty outfits. Let's not buy any more; it would be wasteful."
Elizabeth had never been so extravagant in her life. Suddenly buying so many clothes, all of them luxury items, made her feel a sense of wasteful shame.
"If there's nothing else you like, we can stop," Alexander said.
Elizabeth agreed, "Okay."
"Let's go home," Alexander said briefly.
Alexander didn't carry all the shopping bags, nor did Elizabeth. Because he was a VIP here, the mall had people deliver the goods to their client's home.
After leaving the mall, Alexander didn't get back in the car. Instead, he told Gavin, "Take her home. I need to go to the office to handle some matters."
He was actually going to the office to deal with the people Gavin had knocked down earlier. Gavin understood and nodded respectfully.
Alexander got into another car and left. Gavin said to Elizabeth, "Mrs. Windsor, let's go home."
Elizabeth smiled and asked, "Gavin, can you take me to the office to work overtime? I..."
She had planned to visit Esme at the hospital and then go to the office to work overtime because her colleagues had given her too many miscellaneous jobs. She had been busy with those during the day and hadn't had time to work on the drawings Sawyer had assigned her.
Elizabeth could work on the drawings at home, but it would be at a slower pace and Alexander might see them.
The office had computers, so she wanted to work there.
"No problem," Gavin said.
Elizabeth worked late into the night at the office. Working on the computer was much more efficient than by hand. She was so absorbed in her work that she didn't realize it was already 11 PM when she finished.
She quickly left the office, and found that Gavin was still waiting for her.
When Elizabeth got home, it was almost midnight.
As she walked through the foyer, she saw Alexander sitting in the living room in a robe, with a pink laptop in front of him.
"Come and take a look. Do you like it?" Alexander said.
