Chapter 38 Elizabeth's Sweetness
Alexander watched Owen's car drive away without a word.
Behind him, Gavin said, "Mr. Windsor, that car seems to belong to Mr. Tudor? Did Mr. Tudor come here to see Mrs. Esme Windsor?"
Gavin had been focused on parking earlier and hadn't seen Elizabeth get out of Owen's car, nor had he seen Elizabeth smile at Owen.
Alexander's voice was low and indifferent. "In Owen's mind, my mother is not his aunt. The only reason he calls her aunt now is because he's afraid of me."
With that, Alexander walked alone into the hospital.
Recently, Esme's complexion had improved significantly, not like someone with only a month left to live. Alexander knew this was all because of Elizabeth's efforts, dropping by to accompany Esme every day, making her happy and thus improving her health.
He had to admit, Elizabeth was very resourceful.
In front of him, Elizabeth always appeared cold and aloof, as if she would never get involved with him in this lifetime.
In front of Esme, she became so understanding, every word hitting Esme's heart, making Esme willing to listen to her.
However, in front of Owen, Elizabeth turned into a timid, eager-to-please figure.
Thinking of Elizabeth's smile at Owen and Owen's mocking expression as he looked down at Elizabeth from his car, Alexander felt a surge of inexplicable anger as his eyes turned icy cold.
With this cold aura, he arrived outside Esme's hospital room. Before entering, he heard Esme talking to Elizabeth.
"Elizabeth, in the blink of an eye, my two months have turned into just one month. Having you by my side this past month has made me very happy. But I also have regrets; I'm too greedy. I want to hold a grandchild," Esme said gently to Elizabeth.
As she spoke, she placed her hand on Elizabeth's lower abdomen.
Elizabeth's face immediately turned red from embarrassment.
She did have a child in her belly, but she didn't even know who the father was.
"Elizabeth, tell me. Have you had your period? Have you felt like vomiting recently? You've been married to Alexander for almost a month now. If you were pregnant, you might start having symptoms as early as twenty-five days," Esme said, looking at Elizabeth with hopeful eyes.
Elizabeth's face turned even redder. She said shyly, "Mom."
Maybe it was because of Esme's suggestion, or maybe it was just a coincidence, but Elizabeth suddenly felt like vomiting.
Since becoming pregnant, she had rarely experienced morning sickness.
But at that moment, her stomach felt like it was churning.
In front of Esme, Elizabeth absolutely could not show any signs of pregnancy.
Absolutely not.
"Mom, my company is calling. I need to take this call," Elizabeth said hurriedly, not waiting for Esme's response before rushing out.
At the door, she bumped into Alexander.
Alexander opened his arms to catch her, his voice gentle asked, "What's wrong?"
Elizabeth looked up to see Alexander's cold, intimidating eyes. She hesitated, "I'm fine."
Then she broke free from his embrace and ran out.
Only when she reached the hallway did she crouch by a trash can and started vomiting.
Alexander stood behind her, waiting until she finished before saying coldly, "Don't show any signs of pregnancy in front of my mother!"
"I know. I won't!" Elizabeth replied calmly.
After answering, she didn't look at Alexander and walked straight back to the Esme's room. She didn't owe Alexander anything. Although he had lent her fifty thousand dollars, it could be repaid with the compensation she would receive by the end of the contract.
Even though he had once saved her life from kidnappers.
That was all for his mother's sake.
Since she wasn't indebted to him, she had no reason to be submissive in front of him. Elizabeth just wanted to do her part and give Esme some care and affection in her final days.
Outside, Elizabeth and Alexander were cold and distant to each other. But in Esme's room, they had to put on a show of affection.
At the door, Alexander put his arm around Elizabeth, and she appeared gentle. They entered Esme's room together, and Esme looked at them with a gratified smile.
"Alexander, you two need to hurry up and have a child," Esme advised Alexander.
Before Alexander could say anything, Elizabeth smiled sweetly at Esme. She reassured her, "Mom, you don't need to remind us. I really want to have a baby, too. I measure my temperature every morning and keep track of my period. We're doing everything we can. But you know, Mom, these things can't be rushed!"
She spoke sweetly and shyly.
Esme's face lit up with a smile.
"Alexander, do you think our baby will look like Mom? Mom is a beauty," Elizabeth said, turning her head and looking at Alexander with innocent eyes.
For a moment, Alexander was stunned.
He didn't know how to respond and remained silent.
Esme laughed. Then she teased, "Elizabeth, you don't know Alexander. He's always been quiet, keeping everything to himself. Asking him is pointless."
Alexander nodded slightly and smiled.
"Alright. Elizabeth, Alexander, you both have made me very happy today. I wish you both could stay with me all the time, but I know your company is busy, and Elizabeth has to work, too. I can't take up too much of your time. Go home and take care of yourselves. If you want a baby, you need to stay healthy. Go on now!" Esme ordered.
"Mom, I want to stay with you a little longer," Elizabeth said sincerely. She didn't want to be alone with Alexander.
"Be a good child, go home!" Esme insisted.
Elizabeth and Alexander had no choice but to say goodbye to Esme.
Once outside the room, Elizabeth immediately dropped her smile and distanced herself from Alexander.
He was cold, and she was distant.
When they reached Alexander's car, Elizabeth didn't hesitate and walked straight out of the hospital. She didn't think Alexander would let her ride back with him.
But Alexander grabbed her arm roughly, and reminded, "If my mother sees us, you can't afford the consequences!"
Elizabeth had no choice but to get in his car.
The two remained silent the entire way, and even Gavin, didn't dare to say a word.
When they arrived at Alexander's place, Elizabeth saw Clara waiting at the door from a distance.
Clara looked pitifully at Alexander and Elizabeth. She said, "Mr. Windsor, am I disturbing you? I'm sorry, Alexander. I just missed you so much that I just had to see you, and then I'll leave."
She spoke with a sorrowful and humble tone.
Elizabeth didn't care. She didn't even glance at Clara and walked straight into the elevator.
Outside the elevator, Alexander glared at Clara with cold anger and said with disgust, "Now that you've seen me, go back!"
