Chapter 34 Clara Wants to Stay Overnight

"He’s dead," Elizabeth said bluntly.

Alexander was taken aback, not expecting such a response from her.

Then he curled his lips into a smile, remarking snidely, "You got pregnant first and then killed him? You’re more ruthless than I imagined."

Elizabeth said nothing more.

Facing Alexander's dominance, any explanation from her would seem like a pathetic excuse. It was better to be misunderstood completely.

She looked up and asked bluntly, "Are you still deciding to keep me here to comfort your mother?"

"Don't tell me you want to break the contract?" Alexander retorted.

Elizabeth said with bewilderment, "My deception has already been exposed. I thought you..."

Alexander interrupted her with a cold laugh. "Since the contract is signed, you must obediently take care of my mother until she passes away! Your deception? Let's see if your deception can withstand my power!" he scoffed at her.

Elizabeth remained silent.

As Alexander turned to leave, Elizabeth called out to him from behind, "Wait a minute."

Alexander turned to face her.

"Give me two thousand dollars," she said.

"I have no obligation to support the child in your belly." With that, Alexander closed the door and left.

Elizabeth sat alone on the bed, hugging her knees.

Being penniless was truly hard to endure. She didn't know how to return a camera to the other party. She even particularly hoped that Simon, whom she briefly spoke with at the banquet, would call her at this moment and voluntarily lend her two thousand dollars.

However, Elizabeth lay quietly in the hospital until the afternoon, but her phone did not ring.

In the afternoon, Elizabeth's temperature did not rise. The doctor gave her some medicine, and Elizabeth wanted to be discharged.

Although Alexander had paid her medical bills, she couldn't afford to delay her work. If she lost this job, she really wouldn't be able to survive.

As she was packing up to leave, Elizabeth's phone rang. Without even looking at the number, she eagerly answered, "Hello."

She hoped it was Simon calling.

However, on the other end was Esme's gentle voice, "Elizabeth."

Elizabeth quickly apologized, "Mom, I'm sorry."

"It's okay. Elizabeth," Esme said before Elizabeth could finish. "Alexander told me that you were busy entertaining guests with him yesterday, and you ended up exhausted. The dress you wore was thin, led to a fever and you had to be hospitalized. Elizabeth, it's all my fault. I forgot you were just kidnapped a few days ago and are still weak. I shouldn't have let you handle such a busy event, causing you to fall ill. Rest well and don't worry about me. Alexander is here to take care of me, so everything is fine."

Elizabeth's eyes suddenly reddened as she mentioned, "Mom."

Even though this 'mom' was fake, Esme was Elizabeth's only ray of light.

"Mom, there's something..." Elizabeth said apologetically, "I was too busy last night, and after the banquet, I felt unwell. I didn't have time to take pictures of The Windsor Manor for you."

There was a pause on the other end.

"Mom?" Elizabeth called out, worried.

"It's okay, dear." Esme's voice was a bit weak. "Your health is the most important. We can take pictures another time."

Esme's tone had a hint of concealed disappointment.

Elizabeth understood that Esme was afraid she might never get another chance to see it.

"Elizabeth, promise me you won't tell Alexander that I want to see the inside of The Windsor Manor, okay?" Esme pleaded over the phone.

Elizabeth was puzzled by her request, and asked, "Mom, why?"

"Because it hasn't been easy for Alexander and me. The hardships I've endured to protect him are beyond his imagination, and the retaliations he's made to protect me are beyond what I, as a mother, can fathom. Alexander has made many enemies in his rise to power. If he knew I longed to see The Windsor Manor, he would stop at nothing to get me there. I don't want him to be ruthless for my sake again," Esme's tone was laced with regret, but more so with concern for Alexander.

Elizabeth could hear the lifelong loneliness of a woman in Esme's words.

Esme had never worn a wedding dress, never been acknowledged by the Windsor family. Even though Alexander now controlled everything, Esme still couldn't fulfill her wishes due to various concerns.

How similar Esme's fate was to Elizabeth's? Both had children out of wedlock.

Esme was destined to be lonely, and Elizabeth might also end up the same way.

Thinking of this, Elizabeth couldn't help but feel more sympathy for Esme.

"Mom, I'll visit you tomorrow and bring your favorite porridge. Wait for me in the morning," Elizabeth said with a smile over the phone.

Elizabeth then took out Simon's business card from her bag and dialed the number on it.

The phone rang for a long time before it was answered.

A polite woman's voice came from the other end. "Hello, who is this?"

"Is this Simon, Mr. Jones' phone number?" Elizabeth asked.

"Yes, Mr. Jones is in a meeting. I'm his secretary. May I help you?" the other party asked.

"No, thank you," she replied. Elizabeth knew Simon was deliberately avoiding her.

Giving her his business card and asking for her phone number was just a rich man's trick at a banquet.

And she had directly asked Simon for money.

It was no wonder Simon was scared off.

Elizabeth packed her bag and left the hospital room. As she reached the hospital entrance, she saw Alexander's assistant, Gavin, standing there.

Gavin had a stern expression and said nothing.

Elizabeth assumed that Gavin was not there to pick her up. She didn't believe she deserved such treatment. She had no intention of greeting Gavin and walked straight past him towards the bus stop.

Gavin remained silent.

He couldn't imagine how Elizabeth, this bold yet clumsy schemer, could be so indifferent to everything.

She was indeed different from Clara.

Although Clara was the woman Alexander intended to marry, Gavin could see that Alexander didn't like Clara and her arrogant demeanor.

Elizabeth was different.

Gavin knew that Elizabeth approached Esme and Alexander with ulterior motives, but he didn't dislike Elizabeth.

He drove up to Elizabeth and said warmly, "Miss Spencer, Mr. Windsor asked me to take you home. Please get in the car."

Elizabeth finally got into the car.

She looked out the window the entire way, not saying a word.

When they arrived at Alexander's residence, Elizabeth didn't even thank Gavin.

Elizabeth thought, 'What was there to say?'

She carried her small bag and took the elevator up. As she opened the door and was about to change her shoes in the hallway, she heard someone talking in the living room.

A pretentious voice said, "Alexander, can I stay here tonight?"

Elizabeth tilted her head slightly and saw that it was indeed Clara.
